  • 14.07.2015 Vegetable Farming Scheme Launched Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan Has Said by the End of 2016, Kerala Will Attain T
14.07.2015 Vegetable farming scheme launched Agriculture Minister K.P. Mohanan has said by the end of 2016, Kerala will attain the status of a complete organic farming State. He was launching the district-level Vegetable Farming Development Scheme at the Holy Angels Convent School here on Monday. Stating that this was the beginning towards attaining self-sufficiency in the production of fresh vegetables in the State, the Minister said new schemes including institution of Organic Gramasabhas in Corporation wards and allotting fallow lands in the city for cultivation of vegetables would be carried out from August. The State Farmer’s Day celebrations to be held in Kannur on August 16 will be attended by Agriculture Ministers from the South Indian states, he added. Of the 18 Central government projects, the State had already implemented eight successfully, the Minister said. Children ought to be encouraged to carry out vegetable farming, he urged. Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar, presiding over the function, commended on the efforts of the Agriculture Department and the farmers for the increase in vegetable production in the State from 22 per cent to 50 per cent over the last four years. More than 72 per cent of the production has met the needs of the State. The State is progressing on its own production, he noted. Agricultural fete begins The Mannuthi Agricultural Fest, organised by the Malayoram Agriculture Society, with the aim of promoting organic farming began at the Comtrust grounds in Mananchira on Monday. The fest features high-yielding varieties of saplings and seeds. The stalls provide information on organic farming methods.

Rec. 1.001. Surv. India: 102 (Part 3-4) : 29-31,2004 NEW LOCALITY-RECORD OF DISTRIBUTION OF HORADANDIA ATUKORALI DERANIYAGALA (pISCES : CYPRINIDAE : RASBORINAE) ALONG THE WEST COAST IN KERALA, INDIA K. C. GOPI, ]YOTHI RAMACHANDRAN AND MUHAMED ]AFER PALOT Western Ghats Field Research Station, Zoological Survey of India, Calicut-673 002, India INTRODUCTION Pethiyagoda (1991) speculated on the possibility of certain cyprinid fishes, believed to be endemic to Sri Lanka, also occurring in India. Proving this notion true, Horadandia atukorali Deraniyagala, 1943, described from the freshwater ponds in the coastal plains of Sri Lanka and earlier thought to be endemic to it, was later recorded from India by Rema Devi and Menon (1992). Based on the specimens obtained from a freshwater pond in the coastal plains of west coast (collection locality: Pathiramanal Island in the 'Vembanad' Lake of Alappuzha District, Kerala) , they initially described them as a new subspecies Horadandia atukorali brittani Rema Devi and Menon. However, Menon (1999) considered it to be a synonym of H. atukorali. Rema Devi (1996), later, reported its extended range of distribution to the eastern coastal plains of India, recording the species from the weed infested freshwater bodies at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, and Villianur, Pondicherry, and as well updated the information about the distributional occurrence of the species along the west coastal plains in ponds, ditches and in 'Vembanad' Lake of Kottayam and Alappuzha Districts in southern Kerala (Rema Devi, et al, 1996). There has been no record of H. atukorali from the allied habitat environs in the coastal plains of northern Kerala, and further beyond along the west coastal plains of India.
