One of today’s most sought after songwriters – named BMI’s songwriter of the year in 2016 - Golan has penned global hits and chart-topping songs for Celine Dion, Nicki Minaj, Lady Antebellum, Michael Bublé, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Maroon 5. A work of emotionally charged storytelling and extraordinary musicianship, The Wrong Man was born from a folk song about a man falsely accused of murder in Reno, Nevada. As the album unfolds, Golan spins a tale of sordid romance and cold-blooded murder, desperation and acute tragedy that transports listeners from the seedy underbelly of Reno to a death-row holding cell. The album, released in July, has been transformed into a stage musical, which premiered Off-Broadway in autumn 2019 to sell-out success. The production marked the auspicious reunion of Hamilton collaborators director Thomas Kail and orchestrator Alex Lacamoire, and starred three-time Tony nominee Joshua Henry as the protagonist. Golan, a life-long musician originally from Chicago, wrote the title track to the album in 2005 whilst touring other work. As he developed the story over several songs, he began performing the nascent album in living rooms across Hollywood and, as word spread, took the collection of songs to cities as far flung as Sydney and Nashville before landing an album deal with Interscope Records. With Grammy award winning producer Ricky Reed (whose previous collaborators include Lizzo, Leon Bridges and Maggie Rogers) and a band featuring musicians Mike Elizondo and Trevor Lawrence Jr. (Dr. Dre’s rhythm section), Golan spent 18 months shaping the album and its genre-defying sound that endlessly shifts from gritty folk to guitar-fuelled rock with flashes of country and hip-hop. Since first performing The Wrong Man, Golan has adapted the narrative for an award- winning underground musical and teamed up with director John Hwang (a filmmaker who’s worked with Beyoncé and Rihanna) to create a feature-length animated version of the album, which premiered at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival. It is assumed that fair use provides breathing room above and beyond the determination of infringement to facilitate the creation of new works of expression. This conventional account presupposes that fair use matters—that is, fair use provides greater leeway to a defendant than the test of infringement. Despite its commonsense appeal, this assumption has not been empirically tested. Except for fair uses involving exact copies (for which infringement would otherwise exist), it has not been proven that fair use makes much, if any, difference in results. Indeed, in one sector, the music industry, defendants have avoided pursuing fair use as a defense in nearly all infringement cases (except parodies) decided under the 1976 Copyright Act. This fair use avoidance is surprising given that musicians now face a spate of lawsuits due to a predicament we call copyright clutter, which occurs when copyrights protect many sub-elements of many works in a field of creation, thereby making it difficult for people to create a new work in that field without facing exposure to copyright liability. If fair use provides breathing room, why do musicians avoid it? Despite the extensive literature on fair use, legal scholarship has yet to test if fair use really matters.

He had most of the symptoms, including a hastened, compromised debut album, resultant awkward performances, and a bad reaction to the public eye. While Voicenotes can be loosely classified as a fame-response album -- a category distinguished by works that are woeful in character and quality -- it counteracts Puth's artistic frustrations and in every aspect surpasses Nine Track Mind. Rarely is it overblown and stagey, with Puth generally sounding more at ease, and absolutely invested in the songs. The negative impact celebrity has had on him is addressed directly only in the breezy opener "The Way I Am," where he concedes that he's "just tryin' to find a place to hide," and the twentysomething alludes to it in petulant form only in the closing ("I've been") "Through It All." The set's crux is a series of failed relationships that leap from one disparate experience to another. Puth admits to faults in a couple songs, pinning part of the blame on alcohol and youth, elsewhere feeling belittled by an older woman -- who underestimates his maturity and uses him -- only to immediately afterward bemoan a younger partner's attachment. Stylistically, much of the set is in a continuum of R&B-inspired pop that is earnest and groove-oriented in nature, rooted in early-'80s acts like Hall & Oates and exemplified decades later by Daft Punk's "Something About Us." "Slow It Down" goes as far as to sample the former and resembles a collaboration with the latter as much as the Weeknd's "I Feel It Coming." The best of the material shaped this way is "Done for Me," a sublime breakup prelude on which Puth duets with Kehlani, his most astute choice for collaborator.

So Len Chandler, singer with SVGMC, asked Lynne McLaughlin, former music director of the men’s chorus, if she would be interested in starting a “Sister Choir” for them.
