At the same time, there are no reliable information about Priestless Filippians (bespopovtsy) in this country. The aim of this article is basing on Filippians’ sources and Roma- nian historical and local history investigations to put new information concerning the existence of the Priestless Filippians monastery in Northern Dobrudja in the second half of the 19th century. The study is based on comparative, descriptive, interpretative and other research methods. Several Filippians’ manuscripts mention the previously unknown Kitelesht monastery (hermitage), located “beyond the Danube. ” The data, presented in Filippians’ documents and Romanian studies and reference books, allow us to identify the “Kitelesht hermitage” with the small Russian Priestless monastery in Tichilești on the right bank of the Danube in Tulcea County (județ). At the moment we have information about 12 inhabitants of this monastery, who lived there at different times, apparently from the mid–1850s to the end (or at least until the middle) of the 1870s. At the beginning of the 20th century the monastery in Tichilești ceased to exist, and some years later in this place a leper colony was founded. Dissertation Advisor: Catherine Evtuhov, Ph. D. ABSTRACT Based upon a reading of Ottoman, Russian, and Bulgarian archival documents, this dissertation examines the response by the Ottoman and Russian states to the accelerated pace of migration and spread of disease in the Black Sea region from the outbreak of the Russo-Ottoman War of 1768-1774 to the signing of the Treaty of Hünkar Iskelesi in 1833. Building upon introductory chapters on the Russian-Ottoman Black Sea frontier and a case study of Bulgarian population movements between the Russian and Ottoman Empires, this dissertation analyzes Russian and Ottoman migration and settlement policies, the spread of epidemic diseases (plague and cholera) in the Black Sea region, the construction of quarantines and the implementation of travel document regimes. The role and position of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia as the “middle ground” between the Ottoman and Russian Empires

Moving beyond approaches centered on an investigation of similar territorial debates over contested lands and their immediate outcomes, the paper primarily analyses the potential of a political conflict for generating a community of intellectuals who become involved in propagating their respective state and nation-building causes. Putting the case of interwar Dobruja into the context of “entangled history”, the study clarifies its place within the framework of similar debates regarding other borderlands. Relying on the publications of the participants of the debate, the article claims that a conflict over a territory and the possibilities of its integration binds together influential public actors, various representatives of the local intellectual elite, uniting them in an unlikely epistemic community. Keywords: epistemic community, social networking, state-building, Dobruja Introduction A borderland is not only a contact zone (Pratt 1992, p. 4), but a constant source of political creativity for the local public actors. Territorial frames of an idealized nation-state are usually vague, contested, based on various interpretations of multiple historical legacies and their application to practice.

  • Kozlovsky, M.: Parting Songs of the Dobruja Aromanians and Tatars
Bulletin of the Transilvania University of Braşov – Supplement Series VIII: Performing Arts • Vol. 9 (58) No. 2 - 2016 Parting Songs of the Dobruja Aromanians and Tatars 1 Mirela KOZLOVSKY Abstract: Dobruja, a consequence of numerous overlapping cultures and civilisations, is an actual example of cohabitation and each ancestry keeping its identity. Adapted and accepted in the compact mass of the majority, minority ethnics from Dobruja’s culture and lifestyle is asserted both as part of the community, and outside of it. In geographical areas characterised by multiculturality, such as Dobruja, traditions are performed in diverse forms, thus contributing to the assertion of identity of the group who practices them. This paper aims at introducing the songs accompanying a major moment in the Dobruja Aromanians’ and Tatars’ nuptial ritual. The bride parting with her family environment is distinct in the case of both communities. Parting Songs are both vocal, and instrumental. In the Aromanians’ case, they are played when the bride is taken by the groom from her parents’ house, to go to the religious ceremony. In the case of Tatars, the actual wedding starts with this song, in the moment when the bride and the groom leave the parents’ house and join the guests. These community practices prove the existence of a homogenous ritually background in the Dobruja area, currently deemed to be the native land by all referenced community members. Key-words: wedding, ritual, Aromanians, Tatars, ethno-musicology, traditions, folklore 1. Introduction This paper aims at introducing the nuptial scene of the bride parting with her family, and the related music repertoire of this occasion.

HABILITATION THESIS Eco-friendly Materials for Sustainable Rehabilitation of Substructure Works Affected by Hazards Associate Professor Ancuța Rotaru, PhD 2021 Eco-friendly Materials for Sustainable Rehabilitation of Substructure Works Affected by Hazards To those never distant Abstract This habilitation thesis gets the most out of the scientific achievements carried out after the doctoral thesis defence – November 27, 1997, until the end of 2020. Experiments have gone off in the laboratories of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Building Services of the 'Gheorghe Asachi' Technical University of Iași, where I am carrying out my professional activity in research teams assigned to the Civil Engineering domain. The outcomes appeared in journals/volumes of scientific events with broad international visibility and books/book chapters recognized by CNCSIS or internationally. Also, part of the research activity presented in the thesis was carried out in laboratories abroad, in research partnerships with colleagues from Beira Interior University in Covilha (Portugal), the 'Todor Kableshkov' University of Transport in Sofia (Bulgaria), Jadavpur University in Kolkata (India), American University in Madaba (Jordan), Mohammed V University in Rabat (Morocco). To date, this collaboration has materialized in the publication of 15 scientific papers indexed in international databases (Web of Science, Scopus, Springer). The concept of eco-efficiency was coined first in the book Changing Course (Schmidheiny, 1992) in the 1992 Earth Summit context. This concept expresses 'the development of products and services at competitive prices that meet the needs of humankind with quality of life, while progressively reducing their environmental impact and consumption of raw materials throughout their life cycle, to a level compatible with the capacity of the planet'.

AN EUROPEAN CROSS-BORDER REGION Vasile NICOARĂ “Ovidius ” University, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Department of Geography, 1 University Allley, Constantza, Romania, e-mail: [email protected] Maria-Cornelia URDEA “Ovidius ” University, Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Department of Geography, 1 University Allley, Constantza, Romania, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract : Since January 1 st 2007, Romania and Bulgaria became full rights members of the European Union. Thus, Dobruja, an important part of the Pontic costal sector and a territory divided between the two countries, gained the status of EU border space and became a strategic geopolitical area. Today, after more than 130 years since Dobruja has been divided by the Russian Empire, the possibility of reunification emerged. The adherence of the two states to the Schengen Agreement will eradicate the internal border and will erase all the disputes or polemics on who is the rightful owner of this territory. Key words : Dobruja, cross-border region, Schengen area, regional identity * * * * * * INTRODUCTION Dobruja is a well individualized region from a physical point of view. It is placed between the lower Danube (west), the Chilia Arm (north), the Beli Lom and Kamchiya rivers (south) and the Black Sea (east). The Dobrujan area engrafts on the territory of two countries: Romania and Bulgaria (figure 1). Northern Dobruja (known as Dobrogea) belongs to Romania, while Southern Dobruja is part of Bulgaria (the Bulgarians called it Dobrudzha and the Romanians, Cadrilater).

  • Constructing Borderland Identities in Romania and Bulgaria: the Case of Interwar Dobruja (1912-1939)
    | 127 Constructing borderland identities in Romania and Bulgaria: the case of interwar Dobruja (1912-1939) Ana-Teodora Kurkina Review article UDK 321.013(497Dobruja)”1912/1939” Abstract This paper addresses the shifting identities of a disputed borderland territory, using the interwar Dobruja province as an example, and following the transformation of its political and ethnic boundaries through the eyes of various public participants in the dispute. Their views are explored as vital sources which reflect Bulgarian and Romanian policies in the region and their interactions with the Great Powers. The paper indicates that identity debates had very little influence on the actual population of the region, appealing mainly to various external powers and the political and intellectual “elites” of both countries. A state is viewed as a system of social networks, therefore a contested border becomes a space where those interconnections assume the roles of nationalizing markers. Therefore, the paper proposes to regard a borderland dispute not as a typical pattern of othering, but as an attempt to establish interconnections and make it even more “national” than the regions non-contested. Keywords : Balkan studies, borderland disputes, state-building in the Balkans, Dobruja, Romanian/Bulgarian political thought, social networks. 128 | Identifying a border The Dobrujan question, which first emerged after the signing of the Treaty of Berlin in 1878, became a vital issue in Romanian-Bulgarian relations after the Second Balkan War and Romanian expansion into the southern part of the region, Cadrilater. The territorial exchange that followed transformed the province into an arena for Bulgarian and Romanian nationalist propaganda, characterized by competing state- and nation-building projects, identity debates and modernization programs (Kuzmanova 1989: 18-19).

  • Images of the Tatars in Modern Romanian Literature*
World Literature Studies 1 . vol. 10 . 2017 (50 – 62) ŠTÚDIE / ARTICLES From frontier Orientalism to transnational communities: Images of the Tatars in modern Romanian literature* ANDREI TERIAN In a series of studies published over the last two decades, Andre Gingrich proposes a shift in perspective that is at once significant and beneficial to the understanding of Orientalism and to postcolonial studies in general (see, in particular, Gingrich 1996, 2010, 2015). In this context, it is worth mentioning that, to Edward Said, undoubtedly the most important theorist of “classical” Orientalism, this phenomenon (a) appears as a mainly “academic” construct (Said 1979, 2), (b) it refers exclusively to “the idea of overseas rule” (Said 1994, xxiii), and (c) it implies, paradoxically, the integration of the Orient into the Occidental discourse and system of political domination pre- cisely by highlighting the alterity, i.e. the inferiority of the former. Gingrich’s “fron- tier Orientalism”, on the other hand, is a “systematic set of metaphorical figures and mythological explanations” (1998, 118) which (a) represents, first and foremost, an expression of the popular-collective mindset, whose scholarly value he does not rule out, (b) it applies to cross-ethnic interaction areas where the presence of Orientals – Muslims in particular – is a common reality, and (c) it rests upon a bipolar axiological mechanism in which the inclusion (as “Good Muslim”) and exclusion (as “Bad Mus- lim”) of Orientals operate in a complementary, albeit divergent, manner.

  • Considerations Upon International Treaties Which Shaped the History of Modern Romania (1918 – 2018)
Law256 Review vol. VIII, issue 2, July-December 2018, pp. 256-276 CRISTIAN JURA CONSIDERATIONS UPON INTERNATIONAL TREATIES WHICH SHAPED THE HISTORY OF MODERN ROMANIA (1918 – 2018) Prof PhD Cristian JURA Abstract This research will provide a new perspective on the history of Romania, in general, and on history of modern Romania (1918 – 2018), in particular, from the perspective of various and numerous international treaties signed with or without the participation of Romania and which influenced the destiny of our country. Certain internal legal documents important for the history of Romania will be also introduced. The first document presented at the beginning of this research will be the Decree no. 3631 regarding the validation of the Unification of Basarabia, Bukovina and Transylvania with Romania, on 24th of December 1918. One of the last treaties will be The Treaty of Accession 2005 which is an agreement between the member states of European Union and Bulgaria and Romania, which entered into force on 1 January 2007. Between the two documents, almost 100 years of history are comprised. The main method of research used in drafting this study is the content analysis – simple or comparative, as the case may be – approached in a manner specific to the research in the field of social-human sciences, respectively in the field of legal sciences and history. Therefore, this analysis is mainly qualitative (broadly speaking) and less quantitative, a few statistic aspects being however emphasized where they are naturally completing the analysis of some qualitative aspects. My personal experience in the last 20 years in the field of public international law has played a very important role in the paper herein.

CEU eTD Collection ii Abstract The focus of the current thesis is the evaluation of the propaganda strategies employed by the Romanian and the Bulgarian side in justifying their claims over Dobruja region in 1913-1940. The Dobrujan question, first emerging after the signing of the Treaty of Berlin in 1878, became a vital issue in the Romanian-Bulgarian relations once again after the second Balkan war and the Romanian occupation of the Southern part of the region, Cadrilater. A territorial exchange that followed transformed the province into the playground for the Bulgarian and Romanian nationalistic propaganda, featuring the competing state and nation-building projects, modernization programs and legitimization of the territorial rights. In the research, the process of claiming the rights is seen through the texts produced by the participants of the territorial debate from both sides.
