Friday, August 14, 2015 marked the grand reopening ceremony for the U.S. embassy in Havana. Progress in normalizing relations with Cuba is quickly being made and changes to the landscape are inevitable. Although only ninety miles of ocean separate us from Havana, it sometimes feels like we are worlds apart. Buying food, goods and transport are still a big challenge, which require lots of patience, time and improvisation. In Europe you probably get done 3 times more things in the same time. Your English speaking guide will pick you up at the hotel and bring you to an „Agro-Mercado“ – a typical farmer’s market in the city, where you can still buy fruits, vegetables and meat from the provinces in CUP, the Cuban peso - the currency of the locals. Visit a „Bodega“, one of the small „shops“ run by the government, where you can see Cubans buying other important subsidized goods very cheap with their so called „Libretta“ – the ration card. During the visit of an elementary school or of a family doctor at a typical Poli-Clinico, a medical center, as you can find it in each block of the city, you will learn more about the free Cuban education and/or health system. During a part of the tour your transport will be a „Rutero“ or a „Maquina“, the typical old classic American car or „Lada-.Taxi“, which the Cubans use as a collective means of transport. Don’t miss having a look into one of the big supermarkets or department stores, where also the Cubans have to buy goods in “divisas” or CUC, the Cuban hard currency.

    2020 HAVANA JAZZ FESTIVAL For EXIT ZERO JAZZ FEST GROUP The 35 th annual Havana Jazz Festival will be held from January 14 to 20, 2020 , with events occurring mostly in the evenings. Opening ceremonies will occur in the evening of January 15 th . A detailed schedule of events has not yet been published, but will be forthcoming. More than 125 world renowned artists and groups from the United States, Europe, Cuba and other Latin American countries performed at various established music venues throughout Havana in 2019 , one of the most compelling small cities in Latin America. Favorites included: Preservation Hall Jazz Band Omara Portundo Harold Lopez-Nussa Quartet ( playing the 2019 Fall Exit Zero Jazz Festival ) Pedrito Martinez ( played Exit Zero Jazz Festival three times, returning in 2020) Arturo O’Farrill (played 2018 Exit Zero Jazz Festival ) Dayme Arocena Ernan Lopez-Nussa Cimafunk Horacio Hernandez Dafnis Prieto Los Van Van Dennis Chambers & David Sancious Our program will begin with arrival in Havana on January 14 th , and will include a city tour beginning on the morning of January 15 th . This experience will include a motor tour of some of Havana’s most appealing districts, including the famous seaside drive, the Malecon , as well as the municipalities of Playa, Miramar, and Vedado , culminating in the culturally rich Habana Vieja (Old Havana). On our first full day in Havana, we will enjoy a city tour of various points of interest, including a walking tour of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most unique destinations in the Caribbean.
