Padre Mike Page 3 Alpha Conference, London In a previous communication, I informed you that I had been invited to participate with other representatives of the Archdiocese of Chicago in a conference run by the Anglican parish of the Holy Trinity on Brompton Road in the Knightsbridge neighborhood of London. Those of you who are familiar with London may recognize the name "Brompton Road." Upon it sits the famous Roman Catholic Brompton Oratory, at which the newly canonized St. John Henry Cardinal Newman often preached. The Oratory is located immediately next door to Holy Trinity Brompton Anglican Church. In fact, the two spiritual powerhouses share a parking lot. They also share an intense interest on the part of Millennials. Both houses of worship were packed to the rafters with people in their twenties. We attended the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass at the Brompton Oratory, following the Sunday morning service at Holy Trinity Brompton. I was overwhelmed by the number of young people actively engaged in worship in both churches. God is obviously very much at work in that relatively small section of London. Alpha began in the 1990s at Holy Trinity Brompton as the brainchild of the Reverend Nicky Gumbel, a zealous young Anglican curate. At the time, only a few elderly parishioners were attending Sunday services at the historic church. However, the neighborhood was teaming with young people, who, although seemingly uninterested in traditional religion, were nonetheless eager to pursue spiritual paths in seeking out life's deeper meaning. Along with his wife Pippa, the Reverend Gumbel fashioned a very simple process of proclaiming Christ. This process forms the basis of Alpha today. It rests upon four main principles. 1) Hospitality. Alpha always begins with a meal. 2) Non-Judgement: The Alpha team is coached to accept all of their guests as they are, for who they are. The team is trained to respect differing opinions. 3) Jesus Christ is presented to the participants through a series of taped presentations. The Alpha team addresses questions of the participants about the presentations. 4) Prayer is an essential part of Alpha, but introduced carefully, gradually to the participants. As I experienced Alpha in its original setting, I became enthused about its possibilities at St. Bart's. I look forward to reflecting with you further on Alpha's possibilities among our people. I believe that the Lord might make good use of Alpha....and of us in drawing people to Himself. The Classical Rite of the Catholic Church A sermon preached at the launch of CIEL UK at St. James' Spanish Place, Saturday 1st March, 1997 by Fr. Ignatius Harrison Provost of Brompton Oratory. he things we have heard and understood the things our fathers have told us, T these we will not hide from their children but will tell them to the next generation... He gave a command to our fathers to make it known to their children that the next generation might know it, the children yet to be born .- Psalm 77 FOR those of us who love the classical Roman rite, the last few years have been a time of great encouragement. The Holy Father has made it abundantly clear that priests and laity who are attached to the traditional liturgy must have access to it, and to do so is a legitimate aspiration. Many bishops and prelates have not only celebrated the traditional Mass themselves, but have enabled pastoral and apostolic initiatives within their dioceses, initiatives that make the classical liturgy increasingly accessible. Growing numbers of younger priests who do not remember the pre-conciliar days are discovering the beauty and prayerfulness of the classical forms. Religious communities which have the traditional rites as their staple diet are flourishing, blessed with many vocations. Thousands upon thousands of the faithful are now able to attend the traditional Mass regularly, in full and loyal communion with their bishop in full and loyal communion with the Sovereign Pontiff, the Vicar of Christ. All this, we must believe, is the work of the Lord and it is marvellous in our eyes.

His death, caused by a massive coronary, occurred during a meeting to mark the tenth anniversary of the Francis Skaryna Byelorussian Library and Museum, which he had founded. In his person Byelorussians have lost one of their most outstanding religious and national leaders of the century. One old frtend ex pressed the feelings of many when he said that for him the death of Bishop Sipovich marked the end of an era. Ceslaus Sipovich was born on 8 December 1914 into a farming family at Dziedzinka, a small village in the north-western corner of Byelorussia. At that particular time Byelorussia was incorporated in the Russian Empire, but some years later, as a result of changes brought about by the First World War, its western regions came under Polish rule. The parents of Ceslaus, Vincent (1877-1957) and Jadviha, born Tycka (1890-1974) were both Catholics. They had eight children, of whom five- four boys and one girl- survived, Ceslaus being the eldest. The life of a Byelorussian peasant was not easy, and children were expected at an early age to start to help their parents with the farm work. Ceslaus was no exception, and from that time on, throughout his entire life, he retained a love and respect for manual labour, especially that of a farmer.

Eucharist with the Ordination of Deacons by The Bishop of London assisted by the Area Bishops, and the Bishop Suffragan Thomas the Apostle Saturday 3rd July 2021 5 pm WELCOME TO ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL Today forty women and men are ordained to serve as deacons in the Church of God here at St Paul’s Cathedral. All Christians are called to serve Christ as they live their daily lives. Deacons are called to serve in a particular way, exercising the ministry of ‘diakonia’ – servanthood. We are a Christian church within the Anglican tradition (Church of England) and we welcome people of all Christian traditions as well as people of other faiths and people of little or no faith. Christian worship has been offered to God here for over 1400 years. By worshipping with us today, you become part of that living tradition. Our regular worshippers, supported by members of staff and a large number of volunteers, make up the cathedral community. We are committed to the diversity, equal opportunities and personal and spiritual development of all who work and worship here because we are followers of Jesus Christ. We use sustainably sourced communion wine at all celebrations of the Eucharist, and this order of service is printed on recyclable paper. Thank you for being with us today. If you need any help, please ask a member of staff. Please be assured of our continuing prayers for you when you go back to your homes and places of worship. As you prepare for worship, please be sensitive to the needs of those around you who may wish to pray quietly.

  • August 2016 England Info Sheet
Dear Friend, Once again we set out on pilgrimage, this time to a land many of us will feel comfortable in: Merrie England. And there will be a certain “merriment” in this journey, for we will travel with joyful companions, our friends from England, Leonie and Tessa Caldecott (the widow and daughter of the late Stratford Caldecott, one of the great Catholic editors and writers of the past half century), in the footsteps of the great English saints: St. Thomas a Becket, St. Thomas More, St. John Fisher, St. Edmund Campion, Blessed John Henry Newman, and the writers known as the “Inklings,” J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S.Lewis and the incomparable G.K.Chesterton. With such companions, our days will be merry, and our mornings and evenings bathed in the gentle light of a British summertime. We will begin at Oxford, the ancient university which will be our home for several days. We will get to know the colleges of Oxford, its great library, its pathways and byways, its churches and, yes, its pubs, where Tolkien and C.S. Lewis sometimes dined together. The days will include a steady diet of reflection, in the presentations of some of England’s most thoughtful Catholics of our time, as they instruct us on the history of the Church in England, the life and times of Thomas More and John Fisher, of William Shakespeare, and on down to more recent times. Day by day we will study, and learn, and come to understand what the faith has meant to the British, how it shaped their hearts and minds, how it passed through persecution and apostasy, and how it is being lived today in the very places where it was lived by these great saints and writers.
