I. međunarodna konferencija u povodu 150. obljetnice tvornice torpeda u Rijeci i očuvanja riječke industrijske baštine 57 THE RISE OF BOLTON AS AN IMPORTANT ENGINEERING AND TEXTILE TOWN IN EARLY 1800 ENGLAND Denis O’Connor, Industrial Historian Bolton Lancashire, Great Britain INTRODUCTION The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that Great Britain changed, in the 19th Century, from a rural economy to one based on coal and iron. In doing so it created conditions for British civil, textile and mechanical engineers, such as Robert Whitehead of Bolton, to rise to positions of eminence in their particular fields. Such men travelled across Europe, and laid, through the steam engine and railways, the foundations for many of the regions present day industries. EARLY TEXTILES AND BLEACHING. RISE OF LOCAI INDUSTRIES The origins of Bolton’s textile and engineering industry lie back in the 12th Century with the appointment of a Crown Quality Controller called an Ulnager. During the reign of Henry V111 an itinerant historian Leland observed that ‘Bolton - upon - Moore Market standeth by the cotton and coarse yarns - Diverse villages above Bolton do make Cotton’ and that ‘They burne at Bolton some canelle (coal) of which the Pitts be not far off’. Coal, combined with the many powerful streams of water from the moorlands, provided the basic elements for the textile industry to grow, the damp atmosphere conducive to good spinning of thread. In 1772 a Directory of Manchester (10-12 miles distant) was published, in this can be seen the extent of cloth making in an area of about 12 miles radius round Manchester, with 77 fustian makers (Flax warp and cotton or wool weft) attending the markets, 23 of whom were resident in Bolton. -

IEEM 101: Industrial Engineering and Modern Logistics A brief introduction to the course This course is designed to introduce students with no background in IELM to the basic engineering problems studied by Industrial Engineers (IE). In this preface, we briefly comment on (i) the definition of IE, (ii) the nature of engineering, and (iii) a few important historical events in the history and development of IE. At the end, we list the main topics that will be covered during this course. Definition (from the Institute of Industrial Engineers, or IIE): Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems. This definition is fairly broad, but essentially: IE’s study systems and their performance. A system may be a machine that is cutting metal, or a set of trucks that are transporting goods to and from a factory, or a hospital that has staff looking after the needs of patients, etc. As in any engineering, the objectives are to design systems that work ‘better’ (e.g. faster, cheaper, improved quality of output, etc.) Science vs. Engineering Certainly, IE is a discipline of engineering. What is engineering ? The dictionary definition: The application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems. -

James Nasmyth (1808-90) was one of the most famous engineers of his time and his role in the engineering industry has been the subject of numerous printed accounts, incl. his Autobiography (edited by Samuel Smiles, 1863). The subject of this role has been treated so thoroughly by Mr. J.A. Cantrell in his book, James Nasmyth and the Bridgewater Foundry;a study of entrepreneurship in the early engineering industry Xbhetham Society, series III, vol. 51, Manchester University Press, 1985), which includes a bibliography, that no additional printed sources are referred to in this introduction. The book is quoted below in this catalogue under the short title James Nasmyth and the Bridgewater Foundry. Mr. Cantrell has also generously made a deposit (ref.iU26$) of his collection compiled during his studies of James Nasmyth to help users of the following "records. London Artisans and its old artisans – millwrights 1775-18251 Dr. J.G. Moher - January 2016 Part 1 Abstract Set in the late eighteenth/early nineteenth century metropolis and its environs, this is a study of a small but pivotal group of handicraftsmen, the London master and journeymen millwrights. These mechanical handicraftsmen, harnessed the power sources of those times, mill-wheels and engines driven by water, wind, animal and ’fire’. The nature of the craft is examined in its specific setting of the London region’s services, manufactures and industries of the 1770s onwards, using new original sources derived from research into the changing technology of the trade. Although a tiny group, these handicraftsmen attracted one of the first attempts by Parliament to suppress a trade ‘combination’ by law in 1799, signifying a deeper importance than has previously been appreciated. This study reveals the enormous impact of the millwrights’ trade club activities on the London region’s early brewing, distilling and other manufacturing industries. Part 1 examines the technology of the late eighteenth century millwrighting craft. It then traces the course of the industrial and political struggle between the masters and journeymen which culminated in the masters’ and their ‘employers’ campaign for a Bill to suppress the Journeymen’s Society in 1799. 1 Part 2 takes the story on to the early decades of the nineteenth century, disclosing the continuing industrial battles and Parliamentary struggles for supremacy in the emerging London engineering industry, culminating in the repeal of the journeymen’s key apprenticeship guild laws. The outcome, was the replacement of the medieval master and journeymen system, with its shared control of key features of the trade, by modern employer/employee relationships based an engineers’ economy of individualized terms and conditions. -

The area was once part of Lancashire and part of the hundred of West Derby. In 1894, it became part of the Whiston Rural District. Earliest recorded history of Rainhill speaks of ‘accessed by two ploughlands’, the area was held by the Lord of Eccleston of the Lord of Sutton. The portion next to Sutton was called Ritherope, which is mentioned in 1341. It is next mentioned in 1746 when it passed to the wife of John Williamson of Liverpool, who died at Roby Hall in 1785. The Eccleston family, however, created a subordinate manor of Rainhill of which first the undertenant was Roger de Rainhill. The last family to hold the land was John Chorley who died in 1810, leaving his two daughters the land. Dr James Gerard of Liverpool purchased Rainhill Manor House and in 1824, sold it to Bartholomew Bretherton. Rainhill is famous for the 1829 Rainhill Trials, the competition to test George Stephenson’s argument that locomotives would provide the best motive power for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. -
