THE Pennsylvania Magazine OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY A Pennsylvania Farmer at the Court of King George John Dickinson's London Letters, 1754-1756 HE modern American political scene has long been dominated by lawyers. The legal profession has contributed many more Tthan its share of presidents, senators, and congressmen; occasionally, a good lawyer even finds a berth on the Supreme Court. But the lawyer's proclivity for politics is far from new. With a few notable exceptions (such as Samuel Adams and Benjamin Franklin), the American revolutionary leadership of the 1760's and I77o's was predominantly legal in its professional affiliation. Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, John Adams, James Otis, Daniel Dulany, Jr., William Henry Dray ton, and James Wilson, to offer a selection, were all practicing lawyers at one time or another. They found that their legal education served them extraordinarily well in resolving the proper relationship of their respective provinces to the mother country. Their legal training unquestionably colored their political thinking. As David Ramsay explained in 1789, "no order of men has, in all ages, been more favorable to liberty, than lawyers." When entering the political arena, Ramsay continued, lawyers operated 241 1<\1 H. TREVOR COLBOURN July with a special skill and technique: "while others judge of bad princi- ples by the actual grievances they occasion, lawyers discover them at a distance, and trace future mischiefs from gilded innovations."1 Surprisingly little attention has been given to the lawyer's role in the American Revolution, or to American legal history generally, despite the accuracy of Edmund Burke's remark that "in no country perhaps in the world is the law so general a study/'2 One explanation for this historical delinquency might well be the complexity of the lawyer's craft. -

Job Opening: Tig Welder Millwright Position Overview The role of Journeyman Tig Welder Millwright is to compliment our current team of technicians and assist Knack’s food and beverage customer base with advanced welding, fabrication, and industrial support, to maintain and improve their processing operations. The scope ranges anywhere from day to day maintenance or welding repairs, up to the plant project scale. This takes place on the customer job site or at our shop. Required Personal Responsibilities: • Display Initiative and ability to work self-sufficiently with minimal supervision. Preface Charles Babbage's invention of the computer is something like the weather. Everyone working with computers for the last two decades has been talking about it, but nothing has been done. Every historical introduction to a computer text contains a section on Babbage, often extensive; but they are all based on the quite scanty information about the Analytical Engine published during the nineteenth century. The immense amount of manuscript material concerning Babbage extant in England has remained essentially untouched. The one hoped for exception was Maboth Moseley's Irascible Genius (London, 1964). a full length biography of Babbage. Moseley consulted the Babbage correspondence at the British Museum and the unpublished biography of Babbage written by his friend Harry Wilmot Buxton; yet despite the fact that Moseley was the editor of a computer journal, she did not examine Babbage's notebooks and drawings, now in the Science Museum in South Kensington, and her book contains virtually nothing of interest on the Analytical Engine. On the whole, Irascible Genius is a good deal less interesting than Babbage's own volume of memoirs, Passages from the Life of a Philosopher (London, 1864), and it is no more balanced, and not very much more accurate. -

Summer 2018 Schedule CONTINUING EDUCATION New Construction Trade Classes www.com.edu/ce/harveyconstructiontrades MECHANICAL MAINTENANCE TECH STUDENT LEARNS FROM THE BEST Melvin Robertson is just one of three mechanical maintenance technician students who received an apprenticeship with INEOS Olefins & Polymers in 2017. Robertson, now at INEOS Chocolate Bayou, was introduced to COM’s mechanical maintenance technician program by a coworker at Zachary who was also a previous student of the COM program. Although Robertson was already in the field, he knew the importance of having training and a certificate. “Employment opportunities increase at a company like INEOS by having that certificate,” he said. “A certificate and the hands-on experience you get in the field prepares you for a job.” Once he started the program, Melvin realized he was going to gain valuable knowledge from COM’s instructors. “I hadn’t taken math since high school, but I learned so much from Mr. Himel,” he said. “Mr. Himel started with the basic addition and brought us all the way to trigonometry. “The instructors have your best interest at heart and want you to learn so you can be successful.” Instructors bring years of field experience to the classroom. “Mr. Lloyd Lindsey knew everything about rotating equipment, and his knowledge showed in his teachings. He made sure we knew it, too,” Melvin added. The need for qualified industrial craft instructors is increasing due to the demand for more skilled workers in the field of mechanical maintenance technician, machinist, electrical, HVAC, instrumentation, pipefitting and welding. College of the Mainland hires instructors with experience in the field and have a desire to train the next generation of craft professionals. -

As of April 8th, 2013, the Ontario College of Trades (College) has become responsible for the development and maintenance of these standards. The College is carrying over existing standards without any changes. However, because the Apprenticeship Training and Curriculum Standards documents were developed under either the Trades Qualification and Apprenticeship Act (TQAA) or the Apprenticeship and Certification Act, 1998 (ACA), the definitions contained in these documents may no longer be accurate and may not be reflective of the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act, 2009 (OCTAA) as the new trades legislation in the province. IEEM 101: Industrial Engineering and Modern Logistics A brief introduction to the course This course is designed to introduce students with no background in IELM to the basic engineering problems studied by Industrial Engineers (IE). In this preface, we briefly comment on (i) the definition of IE, (ii) the nature of engineering, and (iii) a few important historical events in the history and development of IE. At the end, we list the main topics that will be covered during this course. Definition (from the Institute of Industrial Engineers, or IIE): Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of people, material, information, equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems. This definition is fairly broad, but essentially: IE’s study systems and their performance. A system may be a machine that is cutting metal, or a set of trucks that are transporting goods to and from a factory, or a hospital that has staff looking after the needs of patients, etc. As in any engineering, the objectives are to design systems that work ‘better’ (e.g. faster, cheaper, improved quality of output, etc.) Science vs. Engineering Certainly, IE is a discipline of engineering. What is engineering ? The dictionary definition: The application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems.
