Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. Based on carapace features, this taxon is placed in the subfamily Actaeinae, family Xanthidae MacLeay, 1838. Species attributed to this genus are known from Eocene reef environments in Europe. Preservation of crustacean remains in this kind of environment is very rare, and it could explain scarcity of specimens of this genus. For the fi rst time, pictures of types of this genus described during the XIX century and the fi rst decades of the XX century are presented. A study of recently collected specimens from the Eocene of Veneto (Italy) allows to clarify relationships between Phlyctenodes krenneri Lörenthey, 1898 and P. dalpiazi Fabiani, 1911. Presence of P. tuberculosus Milne Edwards, 1862 among the new material is documented. The other known species of this genus, P. hantkeni Lörenthey, 1898 is placed in Pseudophlyctenodes new genus on the basis of differences in morphological features. The Crustacea Decapoda (Brachyura and Anomura) of Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, with special reference to the obligate commensals of branching corals 1 John S. GARTH Allan Hancock Foundation Univer5ity of Southern California 2 and Eniwetok Ma rine Biological Laboratory Introduction The brachyuran decapod crustaceans of the Marsh all Islands have been reviewed by Balss (1938) and by Miyake (1938, 1939). These reports stem from the German and Jap anese occupations, respect ively, the former being the result of the Pacific Exp edition of Dr. Sixten Bock, 1917-1918, the latter th e result of the Micronesia Expedition of Prof. Te iso Esaki, 1937-1938. According to Fosberg (1956, p. 1), J aluit Atoll was the headquarters of both the German and the Japan ese administrations, a fact that accounts for the preponderanc e of record s from the southern Marshall Isl ands. Additional coverage of the southern Marsh alls was provided by the 1950 Arno Atoll Expedition of the Coral Atoll Program of the Pa cific Science Board, the decapod crustaceans collected by Dr. R. W. Hiatt having been reported by Holthuis (1953). Carcinologically speak ing, the northern Marshalls ar e less well known, collections having been made only at Likieb Atoll by both Dr. Bock and Prof. Esaki and at Kwajalein Atoll by Prof . Esaki alone. Except for the shrimps, reported by Chace (1955), the extensive collections made in connection with Operation Crossroads in 1946- 1947, which includ ed Bikini, Rongelap, Rongerik, and Eniwetok atolls (Fosberg, 1956, p. 4), are at the U.S. Nationa l Museum awaiting stud y. -

Polydectus Cupulifer (Latreille, 1812) (Decapoda, Xanthidae): First Record from Taiwan
POLYDECTUS CUPULIFER (LATREILLE, 1812) (DECAPODA, XANTHIDAE): FIRST RECORD FROM TAIWAN BY SHOU-YU CHEN1) and PAN-WEN HSUEH1,2) 1) Department of Life Sciences, National Chung Hsing University, 250 Kou Kuang Road, Taichung 402, Taiwan ABSTRACT The unusual xanthid reef crab, Polydectus cupulifer (Latreille, 1812), is characterized by possessing a very thick covering of setae all over its external surfaces and its habit of carrying a large sea anemone on each of its chelae. It is here recorded for the first time from Taiwan as well as from the Chinese seas in general. RÉSUMÉ Le crabe Xanthidae inhabituel, Polydectus cupulifer (Latreille, 1812), est caractérisé par la présence d’une couverture très épaisse de soies sur toutes ses surfaces externes et son habitude de porter une grande anémone de mer sur chacune de ses pinces. Il est ici signalé pour la première fois de Taiwan aussi bien que des mers de Chine en général. INTRODUCTION Among the many unsorted specimens in the National Museum of Natural Science (NMNS), Taichung, Taiwan, Republic of China, we recently found a specimen of a monotypic genus, Polydectus, viz., the xanthid reef crab, Polydectus cupulifer (Latreille, 1812) (subfamily Polydectinae). This unusual species is characterized by a very dense covering of soft setae (tomentum) all over its carapace and appendages, and has been called the “teddy-bear crab” in popular literature. Only two other species of polydectine crab have previously been reported from Taiwan: Lybia caestifera (Alcock, 1898) and L. tessellata (Latreille, 1812) (cf. SANKARANKUTTY Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute THE present paper is the second in the series on Decapoda Brachyura frqm the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and reports 43 species and 2 varieties belonging to 22 genera of which genus Jonesius is new to science apart from 7 new records for the region. Heller (1868) reported 12 species of xanthid crabs from Nicobars. Later Alcock (1898) recorded 85 species and 3 varieties belonging to 33 genera including 8 species already reported by Heller. Since the first male pleopod is known to distinguish the closely related species, the same is illustrated wherever male specimens were available in the collection. Description of the first male pleopod is given for those which were not earlier des cribed by Chopra (1935), Chopra and Das (1937), and Chhapghar (1957). Detailed descriptions of Zozymodes pumilus (Jacquinot) and Pilumnus heterdon Sakai axe also given, both of them being additions to the faunistic fist of India. Oceanic Shoals Commonwealth Marine Reserve survey reveals new records of xanthid crabs (Crustacea: Brachyura: Xanthidae) from northern Australia. Memoirs of Museum Victoria 73: 1–11. Sampling in 2012 (SOL5650 and SS2012t07) by the RV Solander and RV Southern Surveyor resulted in a small collection of decapod crustaceans, including brachyuran crabs. The surveys were undertaken on the shelf off northern Australia, including within the Oceanic Shoals Commonwealth Marine Reserve as part of the Australian Government’s National Environmental Research Program Marine Biodiversity Hub. Here we report on nine species of Xanthidae collected during these surveys, including specimens from the subfamilies Actaeinae, Euxanthinae, Liomerinae and Zosiminae.
