A super "pink" moon will rise into the night sky on April 7. It will be the brightest supermoon of 2020. A supermoon occurs when a full moon happens on the same night the moon reaches perigee. Perigee is the closest point to Earth in its orbit. Apogee is its farthest point from Earth in its orbit. In April, the full moon peaks at 10:35 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Though the moon is called a "pink" moon, its color won't be any different than normal. It will be golden orange when low in the sky. It will brighten to white as it rises. The name comes from pink wildflowers called creeping phlox that bloom in early spring, under April's full moon, according to Catherine Boeckmann at the "Old Farmer's Almanac." Supermoons are only about 7 percent bigger and 15 percent brighter than the average full moon. The difference between a supermoon and an average moon may not be obvious. -

Thuban is not a particularly bright star. At magnitude 3.7 and known as alpha draconis it is not even the brightest star in its constellation. What is Thuban’s connection with the pyramids of Egypt? Among the many mysteries surrounding Egypt’s pyramids are the so-called “air shafts” in the Great Pyramid of Giza. Glossary Glossary Albedo A measure of an object’s reflectivity. A pure white reflecting surface has an albedo of 1.0 (100%). A pitch-black, nonreflecting surface has an albedo of 0.0. The Moon is a fairly dark object with a combined albedo of 0.07 (reflecting 7% of the sunlight that falls upon it). The albedo range of the lunar maria is between 0.05 and 0.08. The brighter highlands have an albedo range from 0.09 to 0.15. Anorthosite Rocks rich in the mineral feldspar, making up much of the Moon’s bright highland regions. Aperture The diameter of a telescope’s objective lens or primary mirror. Apogee The point in the Moon’s orbit where it is furthest from the Earth. At apogee, the Moon can reach a maximum distance of 406,700 km from the Earth. Apollo The manned lunar program of the United States. Between July 1969 and December 1972, six Apollo missions landed on the Moon, allowing a total of 12 astronauts to explore its surface. Asteroid A minor planet. A large solid body of rock in orbit around the Sun. Banded crater A crater that displays dusky linear tracts on its inner walls and/or floor. 250 Basalt A dark, fine-grained volcanic rock, low in silicon, with a low viscosity. Basaltic material fills many of the Moon’s major basins, especially on the near side. Glossary Basin A very large circular impact structure (usually comprising multiple concentric rings) that usually displays some degree of flooding with lava. The largest and most conspicuous lava- flooded basins on the Moon are found on the near side, and most are filled to their outer edges with mare basalts. -

CHAPTER THIRTEEN SYZYGIES A conjunction or an opposition of the Sun with the Moon occurs when the elongation between the two luminaries is 0° or 180°, respec- tively. Syzygy is an astronomical term that refers both to conjunction and opposition. At mean syzygy, the double elongation, 2η ̄ = 0°, where ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ η ̄ = λm – λs, and λm and λs are the mean longitudes of the Moon and the Sun. Analogously, at true syzygy, the double elongation, 2η = 0°, where η = λm – λs, and λm and λs are the true longitudes of the Moon and the Sun. The determination of the time from mean to true syzygy, ∆t, an essential step in the calculation of eclipses, was historically one of the major problems considered in computational astronomy (Chabás and Goldstein 1992 and 1997). Figure 20 represents a mean conjunction of the Sun and the Moon (indicated by the direction of S ̄ and M̄ ) and its corresponding true conjunction (indicated by the direction of S´ and M´). Dhruva the Ancient Indian Pole Star: Fixity, Rotation and Movement
Indian Journal of History of Science, 46.1 (2011) 23-39 DHRUVA THE ANCIENT INDIAN POLE STAR: FIXITY, ROTATION AND MOVEMENT R N IYENGAR* (Received 1 February 2010; revised 24 January 2011) Ancient historical layers of Hindu astronomy are explored in this paper with the help of the Purân.as and the Vedic texts. It is found that Dhruva as described in the Brahmân.d.a and the Vis.n.u purân.a was a star located at the tail of a celestial animal figure known as the Úiúumâra or the Dolphin. This constellation, which can be easily recognized as the modern Draco, is described vividly and accurately in the ancient texts. The body parts of the animal figure are made of fourteen stars, the last four of which including Dhruva on the tail are said to never set. The Taittirîya Âran.yaka text of the Kr.s.n.a-yajurveda school which is more ancient than the above Purân.as describes this constellation by the same name and lists fourteen stars the last among them being named Abhaya, equated with Dhruva, at the tail end of the figure. The accented Vedic text Ekâgni-kân.d.a of the same school recommends observation of Dhruva the fixed Pole Star during marriages. The above Vedic texts are more ancient than the Gr.hya-sûtra literature which was the basis for indologists to deny the existence of a fixed North Star during the Vedic period. However the various Purân.ic and Vedic textual evidence studied here for the first time, leads to the conclusion that in India for the Yajurvedic people Thuban (α-Draconis) was Dhruva the Pole Star c 2800 BC. -

They described dragons, told tales of killing them, and of the pesti- lences coming from dragons. But today we are much wiser and know that such ancient lore is nothing but myth. We are humanists, the measure of all things! We don’t need God. God is just a crutch for the feeble- minded, the weak. Today we know infinitely more than those grunting cave men. They and their dragon-infested Bible: bah!” “Hey!” a voice responds. “We’re not humanists. We believe in God, and we, too, know that dragons are mythological. Ignorant, supersti- tious men introduced the dragons into the Bible. We now have the correct interpretation for those problematic words. They’re not dragons but jack- als. We’re Bible critics, the measure of all things! We find out what God really meant to say but could not say plainly because of the cave-man mentality he had to address in His Word!” Now, that the author of this article totally disagrees with both the above statements let that be understood from the start. If that means being labeled feeble-minded, so be it. We think better of the ancients. Having studied their technology, we find them to be very clever and inventive, and we suspect that they could think circles around the aforementioned humanist and critical geniuses of today. -

Dramatic Space and a Willingness to Let the Spectators Get Involved in the Play in Various Ways
Space in Early Modern English Drama Allan Folkestad Space in Early Modern English Drama The Literary Dramaturgy of Space in the Comedies of John Lyly Doctoral Dissertation at the University of Agder University of Agder Faculty of Humanities and Pedagogy 2012 Abstract The present dissertation investigates the literary dramaturgy of space in the comedies of John Lyly (1564-1606), i.e. the ways in which various textual elements contribute to the establishment of both local settings and wider worlds within the plays. Previous readings of Lyly’s literary dramaturgy have tended to focus on the relationship between the stylistic device of the antithesis and the structure of the dramatic worlds, whereas I argue that deeper insight into the literary dramaturgical techniques of Lyly can be achieved by deploying the conceptual framework of semiotics of drama. Rather than comparing Lyly’s dramaturgy to that of Shakespeare, the dissertation adopts a historical perspective where Lyly’s dramatic oeuvre is examined on the background of the dramaturgy of a selection of middle and early sixteenth-century plays. In the final chapter, however, the perspective changes where Lyly’s only urban play, Mother Bombie, is compared to Shakepeare’s Comedy of Errors. Using lists of all the spatialising utterances in a play as my main analytic tool and then sorting these utterances according to certain parameters reveals that whwn compared to the somewhat mechanical declamatory quality of the spatialising utterances of earlier plays, Lyly’s literary dramaturgy of space unfolds more organically from the dialogue and is better integrated with aspects of characterisation. Moreover, to a higher degree than earlier playwrights Lyly allows minor characters to contribute significantly to the spatial dramaturgy of a play in their speeches.
