The Boston Conservatory, 2007 Committee Chair: Dr. Jonathan Kregor, Ph.D. Abstract The 1918 ballet, Parade, and its music by Erik Satie is a fascinating, and historically significant example of the avant-garde, yet it has not received full attention in the field of musicology. This thesis will provide a study of Parade and the avant-garde, and specifically discuss the ways in which the avant-garde creates a dialectic between the expressiveness of the artwork and the listener’s emotional response. Because it explores the traditional boundaries of art, the avant-garde often resides outside the normal vein of aesthetic theoretical inquiry. However, expression theories can be effectively used to elucidate the aesthetics at play in Parade as well as the implications for expressability present in this avant-garde work. The expression theory of Jenefer Robinson allows for the distinction between expression and evocation (emotions evoked in the listener), and between the composer’s aesthetical goal and the listener’s reaction to an artwork. This has an ideal application in avant-garde works, because it is here that these two categories manifest themselves as so grossly disparate. -

In her monograph Modernism on Stage: The Ballets Russes and the Parisian Avant-Garde, Juliet Bellow uses four relatively unexplored productions--Parade (1917), Cléopâtre (1918), Le Chant du Rossignol (1920) and Le Bal (1929)--to forge an alternative narrative about the Ballets Russes and to restore the company’s central position within the Parisian art world of the 1910s and 1920s. Bellow’s focus on designs by Pablo Picasso, Sonia Delaunay, Henri Matisse and Giorgio de Chirico highlights the complex relationship between Diaghilev’s troupe and the Parisian avant-garde, and spotlights the fascinating and challenging process of transferring two-dimensional artwork (paintings/sketches) to the three-dimensional space of the stage (stage designs/costumes). Modernism on Stage analyses these transformations, tracing forms and ideas as they migrated from painting to stage and back again, and then considers the impact such collaborative ventures had on the artists’ outputs as a whole. In doing so, Bellow prompts new readings of each artist’s oeuvre and of the Ballets Russes in the context of Parisian avant-garde experiments with cubism, simultanism, fauvism and surrealism. The book comprises five main chapters, with a short introduction and a conclusion. The first chapter contextualizes orientalism and the commercial nature of Diaghliev’s pre-war enterprise (Schéhérazade, the Firebird), offset by subsequent radical experiments in L'Après-midi d'un Faune and the Rite of Spring (especially Nijinsky’s choreography). -

Le Rossignol As told by David Hockney The opera takes place in ancient China and begins with a fisherman singing about the beauty of the nightingale’s song. Only he and a little servant girl who works in the palace kitchen know about this wonderful bird. The emperor of China lives in a porcelain palace. Everything about the palace is beautiful. The flowers in the garden have such a subtle perfume that little bells are hung on them, just in case you don’t notice. All the travelers who come to the kingdom write about how beautiful the palace is. And the poets who come say the most beautiful thing of all is the nightingale that sings by the seashore. So the emperor, who only reads books in the palace – he doesn’t go out of the palace – calls the chamberlain and asks why the most wonderful thing in his kingdom is something he does not know about. The emperor’s court tries to find out about the nightingale – but the only one who knows about it is the little girl who washes dishes in the kitchen. They ask everybody in the palace, but the response is we never heard the nightingale – we don’t know about it. Finally they find the little girl who says oh, yes, the nightingale that sings by the seashore is so beautiful. And they ask if she will take them to the nightingale. As a reward they promise to make her Lady High dishwasher and to give her 1 the privilege of watching the emperor eat. -

Stravinsky is one of the most important neo-classical composers of the twentieth century. The purpose of this document is to examine how Stravinsky upholds his neoclassical aesthetic in his violin writing through his two pieces, Suite italienne and Duo Concertant. In these works, Stravinsky’s use of neoclassicism is revealed in two opposite ways. In Suite Italienne, Stravinsky based the composition upon actual music from the eighteenth century. In Duo Concertant, Stravinsky followed the stylistic features of the eighteenth century without parodying actual music from that era. It is based on Stravinsky‟s music for Pulcinella (1920), a ballet named after a 16th century Neapolitan stock character. The purpose of this document is to examine, through the discussion of the history and characteristics of Commedia dell‟Arte ways in which this theatre genre influenced Stravinsky‟s choice of music and compositional techniques when writing Pulcinella and Suite Italienne. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Eric Broker, Communications Manager, 612-342-1612, [email protected] Project Opera Presents The Nightingale Minnesota Opera’s premiere vocal training program mounts a production based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale MINNEAPOLIS (January 6, 2017) – Project Opera’s The Nightingale, by Imant Raminsh, premieres February 10, 2017 in a youth-performed, fully-staged production at The Lab Theater (700 1st St N, Minneapolis). The Nightingale was composed by Imant Raminsh, a Latvia-born, Canadian composer known for beautiful choral and other vocal works. Based on the famous Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, it is the story of a Chinese emperor who prefers the tinkling of a bejeweled mechanical bird to the song of a real nightingale. When the mechanical bird breaks, the real nightingale sings to the emperor on his deathbed, saving his life while teaching him the values of friendship and humility. A parable of our time, this opera celebrates the natural over the artificial and the power of song over death. The cast and orchestra of The Nightingale are entirely comprised of young people. “It is always such a privilege to conduct these kids every weekend,” says Matthew Abernathy, Music Director of Project Opera. “They have an incredible and often overlooked ability to respond like mature musicians and create exemplary performances that are of the highest quality.” Project Opera, a vocal training program for students in grades 4-12, is the centerpiece of Minnesota Opera’s expanding education program for young singers. Led by Music Director Matthew Abernathy, Project Opera teaches healthy vocal technique, exposes students to repertoire in the major operatic languages and instills the fundamentals of acting technique throughout the year-long program.
