  • Early Look at Registrations: Most Promising IBJJF No-Gi Worlds in Years?
Early Look at Registrations: Most Promising IBJJF No-Gi Worlds in Years? View Full 2018 IBJJF World No-Gi Championships Coverage Nov 22, 2018Hywel Teague The list of names signed up for the 2018 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship promises some of the most competitive divisions we've seen in years. No-Gi Worlds will take place on Dec 14*-16, 2018 in Anaheim, California. *The IBJJF may schedule matches for December 14 if the number of athletes registered exceeds capacity to fit the event in two days You will be able to watch the entire event LIVE or On Demand ONLY on FloGrappling. Every mat will be live streamed and you can switch between mats to follow friends or zero in on the best action from the biggest names. Shortly after each match is over, they are available to watch On Demand in the FloGrappling event archive. Go to the event page, click Videos and then search by name. Registration for the 2018 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship runs until December 6, so we're far from seeing the final list. Even still, eager competitors have already put their names forward and we've got some seriously stacked divisions to look forward to. Three of the men's divisions stand out for the sheer depth of talent. Ultra-heavyweight contains two ADCC champions (Gordon Ryan and Cyborg), a five-time No-Gi World Champion (again, Cyborg), an ADCC silver medalist (Jared Dopp), two ADCC Trials winners (Adam Sachnoff and Tex Johnson) and a judo Olympic gold medalist (Satoshi Ishii).

  • Choose Your Jedi Submission System
Choose Your Jedi Submission System Think of the last time watching Jiu-Jitsu made you go beast-mode. Was it while watching your instructor demonstrate a technique? Or was it at your laptop binge watching GOATS like Marcelo Garcia or Garry Tonon submitting absolutely everybody? Probably the latter. Personally, I’ve had millions of “laptop beast-mode” moments. Some of my favorites over the years have been Romulo Barral, Marcelo Garcia, Eddie Bravo, Keenan Cornelius, and Garry Tonon, to name just a few. These guys were as much my instructors Here’s the critical detail: I wasn’t a fanboy. I was a hero-worshipper. I’d put all my attention on just one of these guys for months--scouring the internet for any and all of their competition and training footage--and try to imitate them in the gym. Not only that, I imitated specifically one aspect of their game. They were winning so much because they built up one part of the game to be so strong, that it was virtually a super power against the entire competition. Here’s how I decided one of my super heros: For a period of time, I was training in both the gi and nogi. Marcelo Garcia had won both Worlds (gi) and ADCC (nogi) multiple times and almost all matches by submission. Then I pinpointed his X-Guard for it’s reliable sweeps and leg locking potential across gi and nogi. I even made sure to adopt his stone-cold facial expression--mouth always closed and only breathing through the nose.
