Glamor and farce in Hello, Dolly!, from Wilder to Kelly Julie Vatain-Corfdir & Émilie Rault When Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway in January 1964, immediately to be hailed as “a musical shot through with enchantment,”1 New York audiences were by no means greeting Dolly for the first time. Through a process of recycling which probably owed as much to the potential of the original story as it did to a logic of commercial security, the story of Mrs. Dolly Levi – the meddling matchmaker who sorts out everyone’s love lives and contrives to marry her biggest client herself – had been prosperous on stage and screen for the previous ten years, and would continue to attract audiences to this day.2 Not unlike My Fair Lady, which previously held the record for longest-running Broadway musical, Hello, Dolly! trod on the “surer road to success,”3 with a book based on a popular play by an acclaimed playwright – Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker –, and one which had already been famously adapted to the screen with a cast starring, among others, Shirley Booth and Shirley MacLane. -

` PROGRAM NOTES By Joshua S. Ritter Goodspeed Education & Library Director When Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway in January of 1964, the nation was still reeling from the shock of President Kennedy’s assassination and apprehensive about the worsening situation in Vietnam. The Beatles invasion had just begun; a youthful fervor for change and rock ‘n’ roll was palpable. David Merrick, a preternaturally gifted producer, could sense the longing of another American generation. He undoubtedly knew the time was right to provide the comfort and nostalgia of a good old-fashioned Broadway musical. After all, he was in possession of a successful theatrical property that was screaming to be set to music. It could also serve as a star vehicle for Ethel Merman, and it contained a 1890’s period flavor that would offer much-needed diversion from current events. Merrick began assembling a team of future Broadway legends to give music and new life to Thorton Wilder’s highly-successful play The Matchmaker. The title would quickly change to Dolly! A Damned Exasperating Woman; Call on Dolly; and finally to Hello, Dolly!. Merrick hired Gower Champion and Michael Stewart, with whom he had previously worked on Carnival!, to stage and adapt the book for what would later be called Hello, Dolly!. Merrick hired the young Jerry Herman to compose the music soon after his success penning the score for his first Broadway musical, Milk and Honey. Champion, Stewart, and Herman worked together to anchor the show to the title song and “Put on your Sunday Clothes.” These became massive production numbers, the former involving whirling waiters, trays of food, and Dolly Levi’s grand descent down a flight of stairs. -

My entire career, up to this point, has been dedicated to serving and developing my passion for arts education. As early as High School, I was drawn to both leadership and the arts. Young as I was at the time, I knew that I wanted to share the magic and the power of theater with as many people as possible – and I watched it change the lives of the inner city kids whom I have directed in some of my first theater productions. I went on to try my hand at writing for film and theater, producing talent, teaching theater at conservatories across the country, and offering my services as a judge and a motivational speaker at various international arts events, while leading the education department of Tony Randall's National Actors Theater for over twenty classical productions over eight years. Rodríguez, University of California, Riverside ABSTRACT The early twenty-first century saw a marked increase in depictions of LGBTQ people and communities in American popular culture occurring alongside political activism that culminated in the repeal of the Pentagon's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy (2010) and the Supreme Court's overturning of same-sex marriage bans in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015). Even as these events fueled a triumphant progressive narrative in which social and political representation moved LGBTQ people into a better future, a significant strain of LGBTQ-focused popular culture drew its attention to the past. My dissertation, Are They Family?: Queer Parents and Queer Pasts in Popular Culture, examines how American film, television, and literature between 2005 and 2016 construct relationships among LGBTQ people across recent history in generational and familial terms. These works queer the concept of the family by deploying parents and parental figures to examine the role of families in the transmission of queer knowledges, practices, and identities, countering notions of families as mere precursors to queer identity—“families of origin”—or as the agential creations of out LGBTQ people—“families of choice.” These works demonstrate how such dichotomous conceptions of family limit the people, experiences, and forms of affect that are legible within the category of LGBTQ history. -

Anita Loos: A Hollywood legend with roots in the small Siskiyou County town of Etna By Jon Lewis The gravestone is rather unassuming, as is its location in the Etna Cemetery. What’s not unassuming, however, is the story of the diminutive woman whose fi nal resting place is in Siskiyou County’s Scott Valley. Anita Loos, who stood an inch short of fi ve feet and weighed in at 90 pounds, was a giant in early 20th- century Hollywood and Broadway. In a career spanning 60 years, she wrote some 200 screenplays and played a key role in advancing the acting careers of Douglas Fairbanks, Jean Harlow and Audrey Hepburn. She’s best known for “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” a best-selling comic novel published in 1925 that introduced the world to Lorelei Lee, a gold-digging fl apper. The fi rst edition of the book sold out overnight and it was ultimately printed in 13 diff erent languages in some 85 editions. It garnered praise from literary stalwarts William Faulkner and Aldous Huxley while Edith Horton called it “the great American novel.” The infl uential director D.W. Griffi th dubbed Loos “the most brilliant young woman in the world.” Helen Gurley Brown, editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine, would later remark that the prescient and pioneering Loos had managed the twin goals of “being PHOTO AND COVER PHOTO / Everett Collection / Courtesy Everett Collection - stock.adobe.com sexy and having a fantastic career at the same time before anybody.” Anita Loos, right, and Jean Harlow in a publicity still for the 1932 movie “Red-Headed Woman,” which Loos’s roots in Siskiyou County Loos wrote the screenplay for and Harlow starred, in one of the more famous pre-code era fi lms. -

Debra Byrne joins the cast of Thoroughly Modern Millie. Musical theatre superstar Debra Byrne to play flamboyant society hostess Muzzy Van Hossmere for The Production Company’s Thoroughly Modern Millie. For more than 30 years Debra Byrne has thrilled audiences, from the Queen of Pop at age 16 to Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Her credits include Les Miserables, Cats, Hot Shoe Shuffle, Minefields and Miniskirts, cabaret shows, television drama, film and three CD’s. She said today “ I can’t wait to be part of such a fun, upbeat musical.
