Sea cucumbers (Holothuroidea) are one of the high value marine products, with populations under very critical condition due to over exploitation. Data and information related to the condition of sea cucumber communities, especially in remote islands, like the Sapeken Islands, Sumenep Regency, East Java, Indonesia, is still very limited. This study aimed to determine the species, community structure (density, frequency, and important value index), species diversity index, and distribution patterns of sea cucumbers found in the reef area of Sapeken Islands, using a quantitative descriptive study. This research was conducted in low tide during the day using the quadratic transect method. Data was collected by making direct observations of the population under investigation. The results showed that sea cucumbers belonged to 11 species, from 2 orders: Aspidochirotida, with the species Holothuria hilla, Holothuria fuscopunctata, Holothuria impatiens, Holothuria leucospilota, Holothuria scabra, Stichopus horrens, Stichopus variegates, Actinopyga lecanora, and Actinopyga mauritiana and order Apodida, with the species Synapta maculata and Euapta godeffroyi. The density ranged from 0.162 to 1.37 ind m-2, and the relative density was between 0.035 and 0.292 ind m-2. The highest density was found for H. hilla and the lowest for S. -

They have high commercial value coupled with increasing global production and trade. Sea cucumbers, informally named as bêche-de-mer, or gamat, have long been used for food and folk medicine in the communities of Asia and Middle East. Nutritionally, sea cucumbers have an impressive profile of valuable nutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), and minerals, especially calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. A number of unique biological and pharmacological activities including anti-angiogenic, anticancer, anticoagulant, anti-hypertension, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antithrombotic, antitumor and wound healing have been ascribed to various species of sea cucumbers. Therapeutic properties and medicinal benefits of sea cucumbers can be linked to the presence of a wide array of bioactives especially triterpene glycosides (saponins), chondroitin sulfates, glycosaminoglycan (GAGs), sulfated polysaccharides, sterols (glycosides and sulfates), phenolics, cerberosides, lectins, peptides, glycoprotein, glycosphingolipids and essential fatty acids. -

Balisco1 Abstract Sea cucumber fishing in Rasa Island Wildlife Sanctuary is an important source of livelihood among the coastal inhabitants of Narra Municipality, Palawan, Philippines. Sea cucumbers, however, are becoming overly exploited in most of their distribution range. Therefore, there is a need to determine the status of this fishery resource within the island to serve as basis for management interventions. Of the 24 species identi- fied within the sanctuary, 3 species (Actinopyga echinites, Holothuria scabra and Stichopus herrmanni) are listed as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Only 8 species were encountered at the intertidal and shallow subtidal reefs, and only 20 species were identified by the respondents. The cur- rent number of species in the sanctuary represents about 69% of the 35 reported number of commercially important sea cucumber species in Palawan. The survey for abundance and catch-per-unit-effort in five stations within the sanctuary revealed an average density of 52.95 ind. ha-1. With an average catch-per- unit-effort of 1.79 kg person-1 h-1 and an average fishing time of 5 h, fishers could at least collect 8.95 kg per operation. The projected monthly earnings (PHP 1,600.00)2 from sea cucumber fishing is much lower than what is claimed (PHP 3,937.50–5,571.00) by the respondents whose fishing activities covered a much wider area and depth. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract. Tropical sea cucumbers are commonly exploited by small-scale, poorly managed fisheries. A fundamental problem in managing sea cucumber fisheries is the lack of basic knowledge of important life history characteristics for most species. As a result of plastic body dimensions, biological research on this group of animals becomes exceptionally challenging. To improve our understanding of essential biological parameters, we conducted a study to investigate correlations among various body measurements. We analysed a total of 18 sea cucumber species and more than 6600 individuals collected at Scott Reef in the Timor Sea, north-west Australia. We used hierarchical Bayesian errors-in-variables models to specifically take into account measurement errors that are obviously unavoidable. The measures included three types of weights (wet weight, gutted weight and dry weight) and two body dimensions (length and width). The modelling reveals that using both body length and width as independent variables, wet weight increases approximately linearly with body length, but is a power function (,1.6) of body width, although variability exists among species. -

Preston I. INTRODUCTION Beche-de-mer, also called trepang, is the name given to the dried product manufactured from the marine animals commonly called sea cucumbers or, incorrectly, sea slugs. Sea cucumbers are members of the class Holothurioidea in the phylum Echinodermata, and are sometimes referred to as holothurians or holothuroids. Sea cucumbers of various types are found throughout the tropical Pacific, as well as in other tropical and temperate seas. Only certain species are valued for beche-de-mer production, and many of these are common in the Pacific Islands region. Beche-de-mer is produced by a process of boiling, cleaning, drying and, in some cases, smoking. The finished product, which has a hard rubbery texture, is normally rehydrated by repeated soaking or boiling prior to consumption. The product is considered a delicacy and an aphrodisiac in China and South-east Asia where it is principally consumed. The expansion of Chinese communities in the West, notably in Canada, the USA and Australia, has led to the growth of non-traditional markets for beche-de-mer. This has been further accelerated by international trade and currency regulation, especially in mainland China, which has led to the increasing use of certain types of beche-de-mer as a barter currency. The nature of the product and the simple, low-technology method of processing makes it an ideal commodity for rural areas in the Pacific Islands, where the raw resource is often plentiful, and where cold storage or other facilities needed for trade in alternative types of marine produce may not be readily available.
