The Company’s first two-act ballet, Lazarus is set to a soundtrack produced by Darrin Ross, with his original music, and featuring Nina Simone, Terrence Trent D’Arby, Michael Kiwanuka, Odetta, spoken text written and adapted by Rennie Harris that is performed by Wadud Ahmad, Rennie Harris, as well as the voice of Alvin Ailey. It's Stravinsky's music to Nijinsky's groundbreaking new choreography. It's too much for the audience, and a riot breaks out. It's Philadelphia. It's 2011. It's Stravinsky's music mixed with Arvo Part's and funneled through the millenial mentality of Darrin Ross and, to top it off, the always new choreographic genius of our own Nijinsky, Rennie Harris. Audiences have seen so much since 1913 that nothing starts a physical riot. Nevertheless, Harris's genius sets off a riot in our minds and souls. As the choreographer continues to redefine hiphop with new movement invention and conceptual ideas, he also redefines what we call concert dance. We are invited into a world of myth where the tables are turned and the young virgin to be sacrificed is a beautiful b-boy. The power and agency of women doing this movement vocabulary opens up another level of truth and beauty and turns us around.     ADF in Cleveland Workshop Series- Faculty Bios Charles O. Anderson, a native of Richmond, VA, is Head of Dance at the University of Texas at Austin and artistic director of the critically acclaimed afro-contemporary dance-theater company, dance theatre X (founded in 2003). He received his MFA in Dance from Temple University 2002. Hailing from Philadelphia, Anderson joined the Theatre and Dance faculty of the University of Texas at Austin as a tenured associate professor of African Diasporic Dance in 2011. As a dancer in New York City he worked with such noted choreographers as Ronald K. Brown, Talley Beatty, Jim Self, Mark Dendy, Sean Curran, Joy Kellman, and Miguel Gutierrez. Anderson’s choreography has been presented throughout the US as well as internationally. His latest work recently premiered at the Austin Fusebox Festival and at New York Live Arts as part of the Live Ideas festival, James Baldwin, This Time! Anderson was selected as one of “The 25 Artists to Watch” by Dance Magazine and is a Pew Fellowship in the Arts recipient. Brian Brooks is the inaugural Choreographer in Residence at Chicago's Harris Theater for Music and Dance. This innovative three-year fellowship supports several commissions for Brooks each season, including Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Miami City Ballet, and his own New York-based group. The recipient of a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship, Brooks’ other recent awards include a NY City Center Fellowship and Joyce Theater Artist Residency.     HOME (2011) Choreography by Rennie Harris Assistant Choreographer: Nina Flagg Music by Dennis Ferrer and Raphael Xavier Costumes by Jon Taylor Lighting by Stephen Arnold The bold hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris − who was a part of Judith Jamison’s dynamic collaboration to create Love Stories (2004), along with Robert Battle − returns to the Ailey company to create Home, set to a soul-lifting score of gospel house music. This work is inspired by the stories of people living with or affected by HIV, as shared through the poems and images submitted to the Fight HIV Your Way contest, an initiative of Bristol-Myers Squibb. In its third year, the contest broke new ground, using the power of dance to celebrate the moving journeys of people across the country that are fighting HIV their way. The world premiere took place on a day of major significance, December 1, 2011, both World AIDS Day and the day founder Alvin Ailey died from the disease 22 years ago.     Kyle Clark Hip-Hop Kyle “JustSole” Clark is a native of Baltimore, MD. He moved to Philadelphia in 2002 in pursuit of a professional dance career. Kyle attended the University of the Arts from 2002-2006. In 2003, Kyle joined Philadanco’s D2 under the direction of Donald Lunsford II until 2004. From there Kyle was selected to be in Eleone Dance Theater Company as principal dancer from 2004 -2010. Shortly after graduating from UArts in 2006, Kyle was selected by world renowned Hip Hop Theater Company, Rennie Harris Puremovement. Kyle was a principal dancer from 2006- 2015. In 2010, he was promoted to Rehearsal Director for RHPM and served in that role until 2015. Kyle has performed, taught, and competed internationally in countries such as France, U.K., Amsterdam, Russia, Mexico, Nigeria, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Kyrgyz Republic, and Kazakhstan. He also served as a U.S. Cultural Ambassador for Hip Hop 3 times via DanceMotionUSA and Next Level Programs. His battle wins include: The Abyss 2012 (D.C.), Freestyle Session/SOTI 2013 (Philly), Juste Debout USA 2014 (NYC), Bust-A-Move 2014 (Montreal), Slick City 2 (Chicago). He has also judged battles nationally and internationally including 2 appearances on “House Dance Forever” in 2015 & 2016. Kyle has also choreographed “Street Dance Theater” works for dance companies such as Ailey II, Eleone Dance Theater, JUNK, upon many others. Kyle being passionate about the history, culture, and articulation of Hip-Hop dance, co-founded “ Funky Sole Fundamentals”w/ Dinita Clark in April 2011. It’s a dance workshop series dedicated to the preservation of Hip-Hop, House, and Funk Styles.
