However, in the earlier decades of the twentieth century black women were daily deflecting slings and arrows thrown at them from all sides. Arising out of this milieu of adversity were Josephine Baker, Katherine Dunham, and Pearl Primus, performing artists whose success depended upon a willingness to innovate, to adapt to changing times, and to recognize and seize opportunities when and where they arose. Baker introduced her performing skills to New York audiences in the 1920s, followed by Dunham in the 1930s, and Primus in the 1940s. Although these decades resulted in an outpouring of cultural and artistic experimentation, for performing artists daring to cross traditional boundaries of gender and race, the obstacles were significant. -

News Release
NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 30, 2019 WILLKOMMEN! ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS MUSICAL THEATRE MASTERPIECE “CABARET” Arizona Theatre Company (Sean Daniels, Artistic Director; Billy Russo, Managing Director) will bring the timeless “masterpiece of musical theatre” (Chicago Tribune), Cabaret and its powerful political wallop to the Temple of Music & Art from Nov. 30-Dec. 29 and the Herberger Theater Center from Jan. 4-26. Directed by Sara Bruner, Cabaret, which first opened on Broadway on Nov. 20, 1966 and ran for 1,165 performances, follows American author Cliff Bradshaw (Brandon Espinoza) and his encounter with cabaret performer Sally Bowles (Madison Micucci) at the seedy Kit Kat Klub where she sings. When she is fired by the club’s owner, Max (David Kelly), also her jealous boyfriend, she moves in with Cliff and the two fall in love. As the Nazis begin taking control of the German government, the atmosphere at the Kit Kat Klub and the lives of Cliff and Sally begin to change. For all the exuberant song and dance, the most powerful aspect of Cabaret remains the political wallop it delivers. At its core, Cabaret is a devastating critique of apathy and a clever and terrifying look at totalitarianism. Packed with memorable songs from “Willkommen,” “Perfectly Marvelous,” “I Don’t Care Much,” and, of course, “Cabaret,” Cabaret is a story that remains remarkably timely, particularly in today’s political environment. "Cabaret is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicals ever - and only Arizona Theatre Company, with a full live orchestra on stage - is able to bring the best in our country to work with the best here to create such a piece,” said Arizona Theatre Company Artistic Director Sean Daniels. -

Jones This thesis considers how the Black dancing body constitutes both Black history and dance history by reading the body in Pearl Primus’ Hard Time Blues, The Negro Speaks of Rivers and Strange Fruit as physical auto/biography, or what I shall herein refer to as auto/body/graphy. The Black dancing body, because it is a repository of the Black experience, actively engages in the act of self-naming, self-shaping, and self-recognition. As such, it may be considered an auto/body/graphy that is situated in Black history, an instrument through which histories of origin and migration, struggle against oppression and colonialization, and the forging of identities and self-definition are inscribed and communicated. -

Master of Arts (Radio, Television and Film), May 2012, 110 pp., references, 122 titles. This thesis examines if and how the Internet viewers of Saturday Night Live skits were influenced by the video skits. The viewers’ online comments were read, categorized and analyzed for content to explore and discuss how the viewers “read” the text of the online video skits. Each video in which candidates John McCain, Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama appeared is summarized and analyzed through viewers’ comments. A sample of skits including actors’ portrayals of McCain, Palin, Clinton, Obama and Joe Biden is also summarized and analyzed to find and discuss how the viewers’ perceptions were influenced by the portrayals.
