During his career John was activated nine times, including the memorable 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He also served as an Operations Officer, 44th REOC Unit Commander, Staff Officer of the Illinois Army National Guard State Headquarters and finally retired as a Brigadier General in 1997.

John joined Masonry and the Scottish Rite Valley of Chicago in 1991 and served twice as Master of Isaac Cutter Lodge in Chicago. He’s been Chairman of the Illinois Masonic Foundation for Drug and Alcohol abuse for Children and Members of the Scottish Rite Learning Center. He currently resides in Clarendon Hills, Illinois.
