McKUSICK University of Maryland, Baltimore County Today we are at a crucial moment in the evolution of the Oxford En glish Dictionary, as the dog-eared volumes are withdrawn from library shelves and replaced by the sleek second edition of 1989. This new OED bears witness to the continuing relevance and utility of the "New English Dictionary on Historical Principles" for the current generation of literary scholars. The event of its publication provides an opportunity for a fresh historical perspective on the circum stances surrounding the production of the original OED, which was published between 1884 and 1928 in a series of 125 fascicles and bound up into those thick volumes so familiar to students and teachers of English literature. -

Select Who's Who These brief notes are intended to amplify references in the Chron ology, particularly to individuals not in the public domain. The well-known figures of Wordsworth, Lamb, Southey, Byron, De Quincey and Hazlitt are excluded, as are Mary Lamb and Dorothy Wordsworth, since information about them is readily available elsewhere. Adams, Dr Joseph (1756-1818), physician and editor of the Medical and Physical Journal, published a book on cancer in 1795. In 1805 he became physician to the Smallpox Hospital in London. He recom mended STC to the care of James Gillman in 1816. Aders, Mr and Mrs Charles Mr Aders was a wealthy German mer chant who lived in Euston Square and owned valuable paintings. STC met him during the Highgate years. Mrs Aders, nee Eliza Smith, was a daughter of John Raphael Smith, painter and engraver. STC addressed his poem The Two Founts' to her. The Aders' home housed a fine collection of Italian, early Flemish and German paint ings. Samuel Palmer visited in the 1820s, as did Charles Lamb, who wrote a poem describing it as a chapel. Allen Robert (1772-1805), known as 'Bob Allen', was an army sur geon and journalist. He was at Christ's Hospital with STC, and went on as a sizar to University College, Oxford, where STC visited him in 1794; Allen introduced him to Southey of Balliol. He became inter ested in Pantisocracy, but defected by the end of the year. STC wrote in his defence to Southey, 'He did never promise to form one of our party' (Letters, !. -

John Coleridge, Vicar of the Parish and Head Master of the Grammar School of Ottery St. Mary, in Devonshire. One of the poet's elder brothers was the grandfather of Lord Chief Justice Coleridge. Coleridge's mother was a notable housewife, as was needful in the mother of ten children, who had three more transmitted to her from her husband's former wife. Coleridge's father was a kindly and learned man, little sophisticated, and distinguishing himself now and then by comical acts of what is called absence of mind. Charles Buller, afterwards a judge, was one of his boys, and, when her husband's life seemed to be failing, had promised what help he could give to the anxious wife. When his father died, Samuel Taylor Coleridge was but eight years old, and Charles Buller obtained for him his presentation to Christ's Hospital. Coleridge's mind delighted in far wandering over the fields of thought; from a boy he took intense delight in dreamy speculation on the mysteries that lie around the life of man. From a boy also he proved his subtleties of thought through what Charles Lamb called the "deep and sweet intonations" of such speech as could come only from a poet. -

AND NEW YORK 1894 bin ; C3:>' PREFACE This Memoir is mainly a reproduction of the bio- graphical sketch prefixed to the one-volume edition of Coleridge's Poetical Works^ published last spring. Such an Introduction generally and properly consists of a brief summary of some authoritative biography. As, however, no authoritative biography of Coleridge existed, I was obliged to construct a narrative for my own purpose. With this view, I carefully sifted all the old printed biographical materials, and as far as possible collated them with the original documents I searched all books of Memoirs, etc., likely to Coleridge contain incidental information regarding ; and, further, I was privileged by being permitted to make use of much important matter, either absolutely new, or previously unavailable. My aim had been, not to add to the ever- lengthening array of estimates of Coleridge as a poet and philosopher, but to provide something 1 The Poetical Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Simons, Boston College Committee Chair James Najarian This investigation outlines and applies what I have termed Aesthetic Phenomenology – a method of interdisciplinary criticism founded on the intersections of Martin Heidegger’s existential phenomenology, Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics, and Wolfgang Iser’s literary anthropology. This study traces the articulation of Dasein’s fundamental ontological structures outlined in Heidegger’s philosophy. A concern with Dasein and the issue of its Being, specifically in relation to the aesthetic, are prominently foregrounded in many works of eighteenth-century and Romantic period English literature. Hence conceptions and investigations of the imagination become central during this period. Yet the idea of the imagination itself as a faculty is amended and supplemented when it is brought into play with what Iser terms “the imaginary,” which is conceived as the domain of possible worlds and modes of Being.
