Booth No. 3D43 JIRO TAKAMATSU Also find us at Encounters 3E16: Keiji Uematsu “Invisible axis - distance and angle” Jiro Takamatsu ©The Estate of Jiro takamatsu, Courtesy of Yumiko Chiba Associates Yumiko Chiba Associates is pleased to present Jiro Takamatsu’s works, focusing on the period from the middle of 1970s to 1980s; mainly, his “Compound” series as well as the other works symbiotically related to the series will be introduced. After majoring in oil painting at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music and graduating in 1958, Takamatsu was active over 40 years as an artist. He had an impact on the movement of post-war Japanese art unfolded over the period from the late 1960s to 1970s, such as Anti-art, Conceptualist, and Mono-Ha, with which he made a significant mark on the Japanese art world. Natsuyuki Nakanishi, an artist, who formed the anti-art group Hi-Red Center with Jiro Takamatsu and Genpei Akasegawa, comments on Takamatsu as follows: "[Takamatsu] reviews things known to the world with an innocent curiosity like that of the newly born child and with an earnest attitude. By doing so, reality and non-reality are separated; from the gap in between the two, a new type of humor reveals itself. This creates a situation in which 'things known to the world' are turned into the unknown, which then expands the world that is filled with the unknown. To possess thoughts toward the ideas we humans did not come up with, and to think that every corner from here to the end of the world is already known - but to have a thought that we 'still don't know'.* Jiro Takamatsu was an artist who kept himself engaged in thinking. He practiced various ways in his creation, extending from anti-art performance, paintings, three-dimensional works, installation, photographs and prints. He mentions, “Scientists seem to think about the relationships that exist between objects, but in my case (and in the case of many other artists), I think about the relationships between objects and myself. (Quest for Absence, pp.246-247)”. So, he persisted in questioning himself about existence of objects and human beings and proving them through his perception as well as visual sensation, which remained consistently at root of his creation. Park Grace Shinjuku Bldg. 316, 4-32-6, Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-0023 Japan Opening Hours: 12:00 - 19:00 (Closed on Sunday, Monday, National Holiday) [email protected] +81-3-6276-6731 This presentation will place the “Compound” series as the central feature, yet a part of the transition of Takamatsu’s thinking and proving will be shown through the whole exhibits. Oneness of Paper belongs to the “Oneness” series according to the classification by Takamatsu himself. Oneness divided inside the closed solid is related with the outside space and parts of the other solid, suggesting its link with the “Compound”. Compound, a three-dimensional object, which is coupled with iron, reflects its form onto a flat and gradually converts to Frame as well as Space in Two Dimensions, by pursuing spatiality on a flat surface. Takamatsu also created experimental works, instantly setting up the place in his atelier or when going to a nearby park, which give a glimpse of his ideas of objects and space. The photographs left as a record of the experimentation also show his constant attitude to prove how things could look, the sense of sight itself, or how things should be, as well as his way of producing. Takamatsu contributed the following words in the catalog of Tokyo Biennale '70 titled Between Man and Matter: “If one were to only create a relationship with a specific (a partial) element of a thing, a strong feeling of uncertainty toward that thing would always remain. Even if it means toward a single thing, I feel that it is necessary for one to create a relationship with that thing in its entirety within the extent of one's capability.” In time of worldwide re-evaluation of Japanese conceptual art, our presentation will invite viewers to follow the thread (or a string) of Jiro Takamatsu’s thinking, and we would be grateful if they could appreciate Jiro Takamatsu’s profound thought in his works composed of philosophical ideas and mathematical logic. *Natsuyuki Nakanishi, "On the Writings Sent to Me from Jiro Takamatsu," written in a leaflet that publicized the book The Expanding World Project.
