11 A peel of bells to celebrate Along with many other churches throughout the country, Somborne Bellringers turned out on Wednesday 9th September at 5.00pm to ring out the message of Her Majesty the Queen’s remarkable long reign which now makes her the longest serving monarch to date. The service was a service of celebration and thanksgiving for our harvest — but, this year, as Europe witnesses the flood of refugees who have left their own lands, we also reflected on times of adversity—or, as the first lesson (from Joel, chapter 2, read by Tony Monk) had it: ‘the years the locusts have eaten.’ In his sermon, the vicar discussed the two lessons and Psalm 126, and their emphasis on joy and relief after times of trouble. As many will know, when families get in contact to arrange a baptism, wedding or funeral, I usually meet with them either in their homes or at The Rectory in Stockbridge. It might be that from time to time some would like to take the opportunity to see me for other reasons, such as for a brief chat, to check something out or if they need some help. With this in mind, I am planning to be in the ‘Parish Room’ (entrance through the brown left side gate of the ‘New Vicarage’, Romsey Road) on a number occasions in the next few months. For those unfamiliar with the ‘New Vicarage’, it is next to Froghole, Please go around the side of the house and do not ring the bell on the front door as the Vicarage, at present, has tenants. For the dates when I will be visiting, phone 01264 810810.

I look forward to meeting anyone who calls in.

43 The Vicar has the last word Pre-school, Primary school, Secondary school, College, University, work search. Each of these stages in the lives of children and families marks a “new season”. For some it is a time of excitement and opportunity, for others it can be a time of anxiety or even fear. After I had visited family during the summer I made a detour to Tamworth in Staffordshire. It’s the place where I started work as a primary school teacher when I finished college. The school is still there but the old buildings I taught in were demolished years ago. I made my way out of town to the huge estate (mainly Birmingham overspill) to find the block of council flats I once lived in. The trees have grown and the buildings have mellowed but the flats are surrounded by prison-like steel fences and entry security that was not needed back in the 1980s. There are some great memories of friends I had, Christian youth events we organised and the band I once played in! I expect some of those reading this will have made similar journeys to places from the past. Looking back and sharing memories with those who were there we sometimes see things differently. As we come to each new season of the year some familiar events can bring back good memories and reassurance. Saturday and Sunday 10 and 11 October is the weekend of the Harvest Supper and the Christians Together Harvest Festival at the Parish Church and all are welcome to come along as we celebrate this season. There is also a Young Christians Together Harvest event on 18 October. One of the great hymns that is sometimes sung at harvest includes these words “Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest…. Join with all nature in manifold witness To thy great faithfulness, mercy and love”. I pray that anyone who needs encouragement during this “new season” will find it.
