Volume 18 (2011), Article 3 http://chinajapan.org/articles/18/3 Lim, Tai Wei “Re-centering Trade Periphery through Fired Clay: A Historiography of the Global Mapping of Japanese Trade Ceramics in the Premodern Global Trading Space” Sino-Japanese Studies 18 (2011), article 3. Abstract: A center-periphery system is one that is not static, but is constantly changing. It changes by virtue of technological developments, design innovations, shifting centers of economics and trade, developmental trajectories, and the historical sensitivities of cultural areas involved. To provide an empirical case study, this paper examines the material culture of Arita/Imari 有田/伊万里 trade ceramics in an effort to understand the dynamics of Japan’s regional and global position in the transition from periphery to the core of a global trading system. Sino-Japanese Studies http://chinajapan.org/articles/18/3 Re-centering Trade Periphery through Fired Clay: A Historiography of the Global Mapping of Japanese Trade Ceramics in the 1 Premodern Global Trading Space Lim Tai Wei 林大偉 Chinese University of Hong Kong Introduction Premodern global trade was first dominated by overland routes popularly characterized by the Silk Road, and its participants were mainly located in the vast Eurasian space of this global trading area. While there are many definitions of the Eurasian trading space that included the so-called Silk Road, some of the broadest definitions include the furthest ends of the premodern trading world. For example, Konuralp Ercilasun includes Japan in the broadest definition of the silk route at the farthest East Asian end.2 There are also differing interpretations of the term “Silk Road,” but most interpretations include both the overland as well as the maritime silk route.

The porcelains were first developed and completed by Kakiemon-kiln family in 1650-80’s. The red-color overglazes and the transparent glazes of the present porcelain pieces, which were produced in the early 17th century to the middle 18th century, have been investigated by means of X-ray absorption spectrum using synchrotron radiation. The structure of α-Fe2O3 as red-color emission element is slightly deformed in the red-color overglazes by the other surrounding oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, K2O, Na2O, MgO, PbO), and/or the new complexes of (SiO2-Al2O3,) systems constructed by the raw materials.

Case 13 2010-11 : A lacquered Imari porcelain garniture Expert Adviser’s Statement Reviewing Committee Secretary’s note: Please note that the illustrations referred to have not been reproduced on the MLA website 1. Brief Description Five-piece garniture comprising three lidded oviform jars and two trumpet vases Porcelain painted in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels; black lacquer with gold hiramaki-e (‘flat sprinkled picture’) decoration; black lacquer with all- over covering of mother-of-pearl; some areas of European japanning Lidded jars each 90 cm high Trumpet vases each 62 cm high Porcelain: Japan, Arita kilns, Imari type, maker unknown, 1690-1720 Lacquerwork: Japan, probably Kyoto, workshop unknown, contemporaneous with porcelain Japanning: Europe, workshop(s) unknown, 18 th century and/or later Other than some damage to the covers of the jars, partially made good by European japanning, the condition of the jars is good. While porcelain does not deteriorate with age, lacquer is susceptible to damage through exposure to light, UV radiation in particular, and changes in temperature and relative humidity. Long years of exposure to fluctuating environmental conditions have taken their inevitable toll on the lacquer decoration, the areas of black having lost much of the gloss they would have had when the garniture was new. There is also damage by abrasion, which is again inevitable in the case of lacquer, which scratches relatively easily. 2. Context Althorp House, Northamptonshire; possibly Sarah, 1st Duchess of Marlborough (1660-1744) and thence by descent through her daughter Anne (1683-1716), wife of Charles, 3rd Earl of Sunderland (1675-1722) to her favourite grandson Hon.

Formed over the past four decades, the Cowles Collection reveals thoughtful and discriminating taste, informed by a deep sympathy for tradition as well as an adventurous spirit open to departures from the canon. This is the first major exhibition devoted to the Collection, and the great majority of works are being shown to the public for the first time. From a host of possibilities, we have chosen to focus on one of the great strengths of the collection: visual art closely tied to poetic traditions. Poetry, painting, and calligraphy have always been deeply intertwined in East Asia, but in Japan the nature and meaning of those relationships have transformed over time, responding to larger cultural changes. The more than one hundred paintings, calligraphies, and ceramics in the exhibition, spanning the eighth to 20th centuries, illuminate the central role of poetry in the painting and calligraphy across time and in diverse social contexts. Exquisitely beautiful and richly diverse, the works in this exhibition invite contemplative looking and emotional response. We hope that you will be moved to compose your own verses about what you see and experience.

In the market today, collectors seek a number of unique pieces ranging from antiquities to contemporary art.
