That their dedication, deeds and supreme sacrifice be a constant source of motivation toward greater accomplishments. Pledge loyalty and patriotism to the United States of America and its Constitution. In addition to perpetuating the memory of departed shipmates, we shall provide a way for all Submariners to gather for the mutual benefit and enjoyment. Our com- mon heritage as Submariners shall be strengthened by camaraderie. We support a strong U.S. Submarine Force. The organization will engage in various projects and deeds that will bring about the perpetual remembrance of those shipmates who have given the supreme sacrifice. Uss Bass (Ss-164)
USS BASS (SS-164) FIRE IN THE AFTER BATTERY This is a recollection of a fire on the USS Bass (SS-164) told by BMC (SS) Jack Stevenson who served on her from 1940 till 1943. Jack is known to his friends and shipmates as “Panama Jack” and resides in Colorado. Jack served in the Navy from 1936 until his retirement in 1958 and had tours as a Chief of the Boat (COB) aboard the USS Cob (SS-164), USS Sennet (SS-408) and USS Sea Cat (SS-399). Jack is a member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII and the Submarine Veterans, Charleston Base. The Bass (SS-164) was the first fleet type submarine built and was commissioned in 1925. She was 342’ long with a displacement of 2,000 tons surfaced and 2620 tons submerged. She had a surface speed of over 19 knots and submerged speed of 9 knots. Her test depth was around 200’ and had a range of about 6000 nautical miles with a crew of 50 enlisted and 6 officers. She had an unusual design as the engine rooms where split forward and aft which probably led to the severity of the fire. The forward engine room was used for power and drove the ships generators and the aft engine room was directly coupled to the shafts and was used for propulsion. After the fire she was converted to a cargo submarine and the after engine room was removed and the forward engine room was used to charge the batteries for propulsion. 1 In the summer of 1942 the USS Bass (SS-164) was deployed on her fourth war patrol from her base in Coco Solo, Panama. -

By implementing incremental changes and improvements in the design (and not just in the production process) the Navy is able to get better submarines out of shipyards and into the water much more quickly than would otherwise be possible. America’s Virginia-class submarines come in five “blocks,” and the latest hulls, block Vs, are essentially a new class of submarine. So why aren’t they called something else? Cost Effective According to the Congressional Research Service, the Virginia-class design “was developed to be less expensive and better optimized for post-Cold War submarine missions than the Seawolf-class design,” which was intended to be the United States’ heavy- weight with which to attack Soviet Union underwater strongpoints. Only three Seawolfs were built. The Virginia-class submarines come in five “blocks,” each with different, incremental improvements and tweaks related to manufacturing ease and upgrades in automation to reduce crew size. While the initial batch of ten Virginia-class submarines (blocks I and II) are essentially the same, the following eight Virginias are block III and incorporate a new bow design. As per Craig Hooper’s analysis, the new block IIIs will have “a new sonar array and large diameter vertical payload tubes.” A prodigious twenty percent of the block IIIs were redesigned. -

Crouse, 58, suffered a heart attack and was taken to a nearby medical center, but never regained consciousness. If he could have scripted the final 1 moments of his life, I don't think he could have come up with a more perfect ending than at the submarine veterans annual convention," said Keith Post, a museum plank owner and a member of its board of directors. "He lived and breathed the submarine museum. His legacy at the museum will live far beyond his years." On that morning the face of naval warfare in the Pacific changed utterly. No longer would the war at sea be decided by squadrons of the world’s largest and most powerful battleships. Instead, the strategic emphasis shifted to a combination of two more lethal and far-ranging naval weapon systems. The aircraft carrier would replace the battleship by being able to increase the deadly range of a fleet from a few tens of miles – the range of battleship guns – to the hundreds of miles range of bomb- and torpedo-carrying aircraft. In addition, the American submarine would be able to place a strangler’s grip on the throat of the Japanese empire that, unlike the German U-boats’ attempts to control the Atlantic waters, could not be broken. Some have said that the result of the attack at Pearl Harbor was fortuitous in that it forced the US Navy to look toward the carrier and submarine to defend the southern Pacific and the United States’ western coast. This argument overlooks, however, the prewar build-up in those two weapons platforms, which seems to indicate that some individuals were looking seriously toward the future and the inevitable conflict. -

After a week of waiting for orders, the young pilots were tasked with delivering five new Corsairs to the island airstrip of Ulithi – a place that measured but a mile long and a half-mile across on the map. After they had delivered the planes, the eager young pilots found a landing craft tied to a pier. They got it started and headed out into the anchorage where about 100 ships were sitting in the lagoon. They had no flight orders and they were eager to get into the war. “All I ever wanted to do was fly,” Stan would say years later of the unorthodox manner in which he and his pals entered the war. -

Our email host runs the risk of being blacklisted, which could effectively shut down his business. And we would like for that not to happen. Long story short, our email host will not allow me to continue sending bulk messages (i.e., the monthly newsletter) via his server unless, and until, I verify and cleanup my email list. And that will take some time to do via the method he recommends. Until I can begin to send my bulk email through our current server I will be maximizing use of our website which means you will need to go there more often.
