“DESERT WINDOWS” BY MELISSA BAKER OIL ON CANVAS, 36” x 36”

ABOUT THE ARTIST Melissa Baker is a multi-faceted artist who makes art every day. She and her sister Mercedes established the Ehlers Society, a thriving art community in the heart of the Napa Valley. Her work fuctuates between the abstract and the surreal. Melissa was recently featured in the April issue of American Art Collector. When asked “What does painting mean to you?” she replied: “Everything. I guess it has become my way of processing thought and interpreting the world around me. I’m the happiest when doing it, and the most present when truly engaged. It’s been one of the greatest joys of my life to paint.” Her work has been described as: “…an abstract style ranging from a landscape- like dream on canvas, to the visceral suggestion of bubbles foaming out of a rift in our very reality, to the dawn of time from deep beneath forgotten seas. Te art that covers her studio walls evokes a grand journey through the inner and outer spaces of life, boiling and churning like some barely tamed cacophony.” —Zachary Shuster Melissa received her formal painting education from the University of Wis- consin, but has continued to study diferent aspects of art, music, and flm through travel, mentors, fellow artists and life experience. Te Baker sisters, along with the Ehlers Society, do productions, flm, art shows, music, stage sets, and Nimbash. She has exhibited her paintings in galleries, museums and universities from to Buenos Aires. Melissa has been a part of the Nimbus family for 9 years and thoroughly enjoys teaching and giving back to the community through the arts.

“UNTITLED” BY ADAM WIEDMANN STAINLESS STEEL ON SANDSTONE, 20” x 20” x 66”

“Typically my work has no specifc inspiration. Whether I’m designing a piece for a cli- ent’s property, or just creating one, the lines I choose are organic and either they work, or they never make it out of the sketchbook. Tis piece is the frst that I designed and made in Napa Valley, which may have infuenced the design process. After fnishing the piece I noticed the unmistakable feminine lines of an amphora, bottle or glass in the design. Tis was not deliberate but perhaps an unconscious infuence. Te beauty of abstract art is that the viewer gets to see what they want. Tey become part of the process by giving the work meaning. Te art becomes a personal experience and with each viewer a diferent intimate relationship is built. I do not create the terms of that relationship, rather just a catalyst for it to happen.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST Adam Wiedmann was born and raised in the Berkshires of Western Massachu- setts. He was named for his great great uncle Adam Clark Vroman, the Pasadena based photographer and naturalist. Adam traveled west for college to his familial roots and found himself in the arts. After college he returned to the East Coast to start a family in Maine and had immediate success as a sculptor, showing in galleries and selling his work to public, private and corporate collections world- wide. After too many New England winters, he and his family decided to once again move out West. Recently, they were drawn to Napa Valley, where people practice the art of living—be it food, wine, the arts or philanthropy. As an art- ist, it is his goal to transform a hard industrial material into soft balanced works inspired by nature.

“FAST TRACK TO BLISS” BY TILO KAISER MIXED MEDIA COLLAGE ON CANVAS, 38” X 38”

“ At frst, this work may seem an untamed collage of witty images, constructed with layer upon layer of mark-making and mark-concealing. I assembled it with both found and made images. My process is to jumble-juggle: pop art here, naive paint- ing there. Op art and raw marks dance into a heady psychedelic landscape. Tis mercurial experimentation is emblematic of my way of living. I live to draft and navigate through life as if following the unconscious drawings that inspire my paintings. I may start with a media image or Bond girl shadow, which layers later can only peer through the much-evolved painting. Tese works inspires meditation and engagement. Look long to fnd images that are full of humor, yet perhaps taunt us with an indulgent snicker.”

“MAYA” BY OSCAR AGUILAR OLEA EGG TEMPERA ON CANVAS, 5’ x 7’

“ Tis monotype is part of the “Mayan palette” series. By using watercolor instead of oily ink, I was able to achieve new efects and sensations that remind me of this ancient civilization.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST In the mid 1970s, along with 20 other student artists from the Academia de San Oscar Aguilar Olea Carlos in Mexico City, took to the street. Te group gave themselves the name SUMA and began to use the fences of Mexico City as their canvas. With the attention the murals attracted, SUMA was invited to show at local galleries and museums and the group was part of the frst biennial for young artists in Paris. SUMA also caught the attention of artists like Rufno Tamayo, Juan José Arreola and others, and won a place in the evolution of Mexican Art. Following his involvement with SUMA, Oscar dedicated several years to re- searching painting techniques, studying egg tempera al fresco, oils, watercolors, etchings, drawings, woodcutting, and sculpting. As an artist and teacher for Nim- bus Arts, Oscar applies the techniques he learned and brings his expertise repre- senting the human fgure.

“HERITAGE” BY MERCEDES BAKER OIL ON CANVAS, 48”x 48”

Mercedes Baker grew up on a cattle ranch in the hills of the Napa Valley. She and her sisters, isolated from town, kids, and pretty much any kind of pop media, spent their time creatively—drawing, writing, and turning old dusty hay barns into pal- aces of their imaginations; they never stopped. Oil painting stole Mercedes’ heart in college and has been king of her creativity ever since, but she still has a great capacity for other medias. After art school in Wisconsin, she and her sister moved back to the Napa Valley where they converted an old family farm into an art hub. “It’s a 6-acre ranch in the sticks with hundred-year-old houses, trees, rusty cars, felds, a barn, a gypsy wagon, a river, and an abundance of talented artists. It’s where com- munity is luxury and creativity is treasure. So basically it’s a mansion.” —Dominique Ellermeier, American Art Collector. Mercedes Baker and Ehlers Society were featured in last year’s April issue of American Art Collector. As a group they do productions, flm, art shows, music, stage sets, and Nimbash. Mercedes’ has exhibited her oil paintings both nationally and abroad, in gal- leries, museums, universities and wineries. She believes that artists need each other. Artists give each other courage and help each other remember that art is the mirror of humanity. It directly correlates to our surroundings, both physical and emotional, and it allows us to process all things seen and unseen. Her current work refects the passage of time and the transparency of fgures, buildings, and animals, as they refect their heritage. Trough her work she explores the idea that every person carries all that came before as well as everything that has directly and indirectly afected them. Our connection to each other is vast and it is only a thin veil of perception that makes us feel alone.
