Jazz for Prostate Cancer Awareness
Jazz for Prostate Cancer Awareness™ (Jazz4PCA), will host their 5th Annual Jazz4PCA Holiday Gala at The Rutgers Club in Piscataway, NJ on Sunday, December 8, 2019, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Gala’s featured artist is renowned jazz pianist/composer/arranger Nat Adderley Jr., and his quartet. Jazz4PCA is a 501c3-registered foundation focused on raising prostate cancer awareness and funding for free screenings in uninsured and underinsured populations. Jazz4PCA advocates for men’s wellness through the draw and appeal of live jazz music in a relaxed atmosphere. Their growing constituency of local, state, and national partners, which include restaurants, music venues, notable musicians, politicians, healthcare practitioners, other non-profit organizations, survivors, patients, and volunteers help them to achieve our objectives. Jazz4PCA™ was founded in 2011 in memory of legendary jazz trombonist James “Jimmy” Stowe, who succumbed to prostate cancer at age 61. His brothers, Phillip, Ralp h, and Wendell, each have undergone a successful prostatectomy, from the benefits of early cancer screenings. Proceeds from this Jazz4PCA™ event will offer the same opportunity to other men by contributing to a national “free prostate cancer screening” campaign. The Gala’s keynote speaker will be Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey’s, Dr. Isaac Kim, Chief of Urologic Oncology, Executive Director of the Prostate Cancer Program, and mentor of Jazz4PCA’s outreach campaign. Other brief presentations will feature: • RESPOND Study - a nation-wide, $26.5 million funded study initiative examining African- American men and their more-aggressive forms of prostate cancer. Antoinette M. Stroup, PhD, Director of the New Jersey State Cancer Registry and Principal Investigator, will lead the presentation. -

Hands of Advent Daily Devotional
Tom Perry The following Advent devotional booklet, Hands of Advent, is written by members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mission and Shawnee, Kansas. The booklet follows the themes of Advent as practiced in our congregation. Each week will start with a painting symbolic of the week’s theme. We journey from Hope to Peace, Joy, and then celebrate God’s Love to us through His gift of the Christ child. Each day of the week will have an offered piece, either in prose or poetry. Each author has a unique style of writing that speaks to his or her individual view of the Advent emotions. We received contributions from both lay and clergy members of Trinity in order to present a variety of perspectives. The paintings are artistic creations by Mariana Csaszar from Washington D.C. She was given the four themes and created the hands. We thank her and all our contributors for donating their time and talents to this project. We pray that this devotional booklet adds to the meaning and celebration of this Advent season. P a g e | 1 Hope Through simple, prayerful hands we find the glow of hope—hope for ourselves, for our family, for our world. It is the certain hope and trust that God is ever with us and showers us with His love. It is the certain hope that we are His forever. It is the certain hope of our Savior, Jesus Christ. P a g e | 2 Week 1 Pastor Mark Schulz Hope The weeks leading up to Christmas are filled with the world’s version of “hope:” I hope I get what’s on my Christmas list; I hope we’ll be able to get together for Christmas; I hope for “peace on earth.” But Paul offers us something much more meaningful when he writes about the “God of hope.” That’s because biblical hope is not just a desired outcome, it is a preferred future based on the faithful promises of God. -
Country Music in the Modern Era: 1940S-1970S New World NW 207
Country Music in the Modern Era: 1940s-1970s New World NW 207 Country music is a commercial art. The music's artistic development is intertwined with the growth of those institutions that helped or hindered the performance of the music. Radio shows, record companies, and television networks have all had a place in the story. Great artists have left their mark on country music's sound, and great executives have had an equal influence on the music by affecting its packaging and availability. The term "country music" came into use only gradually in the years following World War II. "Hillbilly music" had been the term used to characterize the music of the white rural South, but after the war the style came under the influence of popular music and an urban audience, and as the music changed "hillbilly" became less and less accurate. The period between World War II and the middle seventies has generally been one of growth in the audience for this most native of American music traditions. In the twenties and thirties country material was essentially folk music placed on disc. By the end of the thirties the music had diversified to a considerable degree, but much hillbilly music continued to reflect British and American folk song. It was most frequently recorded on location in the South and Southwest. Powerful radio stations like Chicago's WLS and Nashville's WSM broadcast live country music to a growing audience. Bob Wills and his jazz influenced western swing thrilled thousands of country fans in the Southwest. Yet, despite these signs of musical growth and diversity, hillbilly music remained unfocused in the thirties. -
