Jazz for Prostate Cancer Awareness™ (Jazz4PCA), will host their 5th Annual Jazz4PCA Holiday Gala at The Rutgers Club in Piscataway, NJ on Sunday, December 8, 2019, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Gala’s featured artist is renowned jazz pianist/composer/arranger Nat Adderley Jr., and his quartet. Jazz4PCA is a 501c3-registered foundation focused on raising prostate cancer awareness and funding for free screenings in uninsured and underinsured populations. Jazz4PCA advocates for men’s wellness through the draw and appeal of live jazz music in a relaxed atmosphere. Their growing constituency of local, state, and national partners, which include restaurants, music venues, notable musicians, politicians, healthcare practitioners, other non-profit organizations, survivors, patients, and volunteers help them to achieve our objectives. Jazz4PCA™ was founded in 2011 in memory of legendary jazz trombonist James “Jimmy” Stowe, who succumbed to prostate cancer at age 61. His brothers, Phillip, Ralp h, and Wendell, each have undergone a successful prostatectomy, from the benefits of early cancer screenings. Proceeds from this Jazz4PCA™ event will offer the same opportunity to other men by contributing to a national “free prostate cancer screening” campaign. The Gala’s keynote speaker will be Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey’s, Dr. Isaac Kim, Chief of Urologic Oncology, Executive Director of the Prostate Cancer Program, and mentor of Jazz4PCA’s outreach campaign. Other brief presentations will feature: • RESPOND Study - a nation-wide, $26.5 million funded study initiative examining African- American men and their more-aggressive forms of prostate cancer. Antoinette M. Stroup, PhD, Director of the New Jersey State Cancer Registry and Principal Investigator, will lead the presentation. • ProjectHERO - a research study finding ways to improve clinical care and the healing process of prostate cancer fighters and survivors. HERO Principal Investigator, Anita Kinney, PhD, RN, Associate Director for Cancer Health Equity and Engagement at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Director of the Center for Cancer Health Equity at the School of Public Health, and Director of ScreenNJ will present. The Gala’s musical selection, Nat Adderley Jr., was born in jazz royalty as the son of trumpeter Nat Adderley, Sr. and nephew of saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Nat Adderley Jr. is perhaps best known for his composer/arranger/production work with Luther Vandross. Nat composed and arranged Luther’s first Top 20 pop hit, “Stop to Love”, along with other popular Luther songs, including “Wait for Love”, the Grammy-nominated “Give me the Reason”, and “The Closer I Get To You”- Luther’s duet with Beyonce Knowles, which won a Grammy in 2004 for best R&B performance by a duo or group. Nat was Luther’s close friend and his musical director from 1981 until his death. Nat recorded, performed, arranged, and produced successfully with many other artists, including Kirk Whalum, Natalie Cole, Johnny Gill, Aretha Franklin, and The Temptations. Moreover, all the piano heard in the Broadway production of August Wilson’s Piano Lesson was performed by Nat Adderley Jr. To purchase jazz dinner tickets to this ‘reservations only’ event, please go to: https://jazz4pca.org.
