Princeton/Stanford Working Papers in Classics Coin quality, coin quantity, and coin value in early China and the Roman world Version 2.0 September 2010 Walter Scheidel Stanford University Abstract: In ancient China, early bronze ‘tool money’ came to be replaced by round bronze coins that were supplemented by uncoined gold and silver bullion, whereas in the Greco-Roman world, precious-metal coins dominated from the beginnings of coinage. Chinese currency is often interpreted in ‘nominalist’ terms, and although a ‘metallist’ perspective used be common among students of Greco-Roman coinage, putatively fiduciary elements of the Roman currency system are now receiving growing attention. I argue that both the intrinsic properties of coins and the volume of the money supply were the principal determinants of coin value and that fiduciary aspects must not be overrated. These principles apply regardless of whether precious-metal or base-metal currencies were dominant. © Walter Scheidel. [email protected] How was the valuation of ancient coins related to their quality and quantity? How did ancient economies respond to coin debasement and to sharp increases in the money supply relative to the number of goods and transactions? I argue that the same answer – that the result was a devaluation of the coinage in real terms, most commonly leading to price increases – applies to two ostensibly quite different monetary systems, those of early China and the Roman Empire. Coinage in Western and Eastern Eurasia In which ways did these systems differ? 1 In Western Eurasia coinage arose in the form of oblong and later round coins in the Greco-Lydian Aegean, made of electron and then mostly silver, perhaps as early as the late seventh century BCE. -

16/07/2021 EMSR517 – Flood in Western Germany EMSR518 – Flood in Belgium EMSR519 – Flood in Switzerland EMSR520 – Flood in The Netherlands EMS INFORMATION BULLETIN Nr 144 THE COPERNICUS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SERVICE The Copernicus Emergency Management Service forecasts, notifies, and monitors devastating floods in Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland CEMS flood forecasting and notifying in Germany On 9 and 10 July, flood forecasts by the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service indicated a high probability of flooding for the Rhine River basin, affecting Switzerland and Germany. Subsequent forecasts also indicated a high risk of flooding for the Meuse River basin, affecting Belgium. The magnitude of the floods forecasted for the Rhine River basin increased significantly in this period. The first EFAS notifications were sent to the relevant national authorities starting on 10 July and, with the continuously updated forecasts, more than 25 notifications were sent for specific regions of the Rhine and Meuse River basins in the following days until 14 July. Figure: EFAS flood forecast from 12.07.2021 00:00 UTC Providing early and current maps of flooded areas On 13 July, the CEMS Rapid Mapping component was activated to map the ongoing floods in parts of Western Germany (EMSR517 Mapping Website , EMSR517 Activation Viewer). As a flood peak was foreseen on 16 July for segments of other rivers, CEMS preemptively acquired satellite images of the vulnerable area through Pre-Tasking on 14 July. These early images informed ensuing activations by the CEMS Rapid Mapping component based on the EFAS forecasts for areas in Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France. -

The box set is accompanied with a story card, certificate of authenticity, and a black gift box. By the middle of the third century, the Roman Empire began to show signs of collapse. A parade of emperors took the throne, mostly from the ranks of the military. Years of civil war and open revolt led to an erosion of territory. In the year 260, in a battle on the Eastern front, the emperor Valerian was taken prisoner by the hated Persians. He died in captivity, and his corpse was stuffed and hung on the wall of the palace of the Persian king. Valerian’s capture threw the already-fractured empire into complete disarray. His son and co-emperor, Gallienus, was unable to quell the unrest. Charismatic generals sought to consolidate their own power, but none was as powerful, or as ambitious, as Postumus. Born in an outpost of the Empire, of common stock, Postumus rose swiftly through the ranks, eventually commanding Roman forces “among the Celts”—a territory that included modern-day France, Belgium, Holland, and England. In the aftermath of Valerian’s abduction in 260, his soldiers proclaimed Postumus emperor. Thus was born the so-called Gallic Empire. After nine years of relative peace and prosperity, Postumus was murdered by his own troops, and the Gallic Empire, which had depended on the force of his personality, began to crumble. -

1906 - 2006 Cento anni della strada internazionale delle Centovalli 23 settembre 2006 Camedo - Ponte Ribellasca (Dogana svizzera) ____________________________________________________________ Cento anni or sono, la politica della mobilità era al centro del dibattito politico cantonale e monopolizzava la discussione, forse ancor più dei temi finanziari e di quelli sociali. L'evoluzione economica e culturale del Ticino, infatti, è legata a doppio filo alla costruzione della rete di collegamenti interni. L'identità cantonale, prima frammentata e inesistente, è andata consolidandosi proprio con la costruzione delle vie di comunicazione, man mano che diventava più facile spostarsi da un villaggio all'altro, conoscersi, scambiare merci e opinioni. I progettisti dell'epoca avevano creato i tracciati ricalcando i sentieri e le antiche mulattiere, disegnate sulla fitta trama degli insediamenti abitativi dispersi nelle vallate che portano ai Passi del Sempione, del San Gottardo e del Lucomagno. Nel 1906, la congiunzione definitiva al confine nazionale, sopra la Ribellasca, dei due tratti della strada carrozzabile delle Centovalli e della Valle Vigezzo ha segnato la fine dei lavori di costruzione di questa importante via di comunicazione internazionale. La prima rete di strade carrozzabili del Cantone era così completa. L'opera perseguiva l'obiettivo del collegamento tra il Locarnese, la provincia piemontese del Verbano-Cusio-Ossola e il Vallese, attraverso il passo del Sempione. Questa strada permise, inoltre, un facile accesso ai cantieri della ferrovia a scartamento ridotto Locarno-Domodossola, la nota linea della Centovallina, la cui inaugurazione avvenne 17 anni più tardi, nel 1923. La costruzione di strade e ponti ha quindi costituito un momento cruciale della nostra storia, favorendo il superamento delle divisioni e avvicinando la popolazione. -

HISTOIRE DES COLLECTIONS NUMISMATIQUES ET DES INSTITUTIONS VOUÉES À LA NUMISMATIQUE Numismatic Collections in Scotland Scotland is fortunate in possessing two major cabinets of international signifi- cance. In addition over 120 other institutions, from large civic museums to smaller provincial ones, hold collections of coins and medals of varying size and impor- tance. 1 The two main collections, the Hunterian held at the University of Glasgow, and the national collection, housed at the National Museums of Scotland in Edinburgh, nicely complement each other. The former, based on the renowned late 18th centu- ry cabinet of Dr. William Hunter, contains an outstanding collection of Greek and Roman coins as well as important groups of Anglo-Saxon, medieval and later English, and Scottish issues along with a superb holding of medals. The National Museums of Scotland house the largest and most comprehensive group of Scottish coins and medals extant. Each collection now numbers approximately 70,000 speci- mens. The public numismatic collections from the rest of Scotland, though perhaps not so well known, are now recorded to some extent due to a National Audit of the coun- try’s cultural heritage held by museums and galleries carried out by the Scottish Museums Council in 2001 on behalf of the Scottish Government. 2 Coins and Medals was one of 20 collections types included in the questionnaire, asking for location, size and breakdown into badges, banknotes, coins, medals, tokens, and other. Over 12 million objects made up what was termed the Distributed National Collection, of which 3.3% consisted of approximately 68,000 coins and medals in the National Museums concentrated in Edinburgh and 345,000 in the non-nationals throughout the rest of the country. -

Results of Recent Terrace Research in the Middle Rhine Valley
Results of Recent Terrace Research in the Middle Rhine Valley A lot of questions concerning the sequence of terraces in the Middle Rhine Valley as well as their genetic dependence on geological, geomorphological and climatic processes remain insufficiently answered. So far, three issues in particular have required further examination: -The phenomenon of the horizontal consistency ("Horizontalkonstanz") of the main terraces cannot be explained coherently. -Studies from adjoining valleys of the Nahe and Lahn rivers, have identified larger numbers of terraces within the upper terrace group (ANDRES & SEWERING 1983; GÖRG 1984; SEWERING 1993). -Unsolved problems concerning the positions and ages of the older (äHT) and younger (jHT) main terraces. Given these problems, we started re-mapping the terraces of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley by conducting numerous borehole drillings. Our results, which we combined with the findings presented in previous studies, demonstrate the existence of a total of 28 alluvial sediment bodies in the valleys of the rivers Nahe and Rhine between Bad Kreuznach, Bingen and Boppard (GÖRG 1984; PREUSS 1983; ANDRES & PREUSS 1983; PREUSS, BURGER & SIEGLER 2015). For the Lower Middle Rhine Valley we mainly used the publications of BIBUS (1980), HOSELMANN (1994) AND BOENIGK & HOSELMANN (2003). For the Moselle and Lahn CORDIER et al. (2006, 2014) and SEWERING (1993) provided helpful insights. Further information was obtained from FUCHS et al. (1983), BIBUS & SEMMEL (1977)AND SEMMEL (2009). .The Downstream Correlation Diagram (DCD) of river terraces in the Lower Nahe and Upper Middle Rhine Valley (see Fig. 1) contains 28 alluvial sediment bodies. They were identified at key locations with more than 720 borehole drillings, many of them in clusters, which in most cases reached the rockbed of the river terraces.
