CHAPTER 1 Methodology and Sources With the death of Nicola D'Ascenzo in 1954, several of his drawings were left to the Philadelphia Free Public Library as the D'Ascenzo Memorial Collection, and ownership of the studio was eventually divided up among two surviving artists, Ralph E. Ohmer and David Bramnick. Ultimately, Bramnick's son, Alfred, bought out Ohmer and became the sole owner of the studio. Under Alfred's care, the contents of the studio were moved around to several locations within

The Seasons staircase window Glenyarrah mansion, Sydney. c.1876. “A range of performance beyond any modern artist”; so Ford Madox Brown’s appreciation of the work of his former pupil, the brilliant colourist, decorator and stained glass artist, Daniel Cottier (1837-91) was reported in the Glaswegian press. “Here tone and colour are suggestive of paradise itself,” he enthused about Cottier’s decorative enrichment of the interior of Queen’s Park United Presbyterian Church (1867-69), which Brown saw in Glasgow in 1883.1 Brown had befriended Cottier in the late 1850s at the Working Men’s College in Red Lion Square, London, where Cottier attended lectures by John Ruskin and was instructed in draw- ing by Brown, who had taken over from Dante Gabriel Rossetti.2 Through Brown, Cottier studied Pre-Raphaelite art and observed the formation of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. in London in 1861.3 Following on from Morris’s example, Cottier made a successful career from his decorating businesses in London, New York, and Sydney, where he co-established Lyon, Cottier & Co. in 1873.     Beyond terminology, or, the limits of ‘decorative arts’ Deborah L. Krohn George Kubler invites the reader to imagine a unified approach to the study of things in the first lines of his classic The Shape of Time, published in 1962: ‘Let us suppose that the idea of art can be expanded to embrace the whole range of man- made things, including all tools and writing in addition to the useless, beautiful, and poetic things of the world.’1 Following Kubler’s suggestion, supposing, in this case, that all ‘man-made things’ fall under the category of art, then the distinction implied by the question, ‘What is the role of the decorative arts within art historical discourse?’ loses much of its force. I’d like to tweak this question, posed here by Christina Anderson and Catherine Futter, to read something like ‘Do the various perspectives on cultural artefacts generated within material culture studies make the historical distinction between decorative arts and fine arts obsolete or redundant?’2 I will look first at the history of the term ‘decorative arts’ and what it has come to mean as a field of academic study as well as a collecting area. I will then reflect on an exhibition that I co-organized at the Bard Graduate Center Gallery in 2013 as a case study in both the utility and limitations of the category of decorative arts in the current intellectual climate. At the heart of this discussion is a firm conviction that the exploration of the forms of cultural production that populate our environment must not be fragmented by arbitrary and ill-defined categories.

    The Lawrence Stanley Lee (LSL) Marylebone Madonna Window Installed in 1955 as part of post war damage work to the parish church. The window is the first window on the liturgical south (geographically west) side of the ground floor of the nave. The Arms of those of the old Borough of St Marylebone. The motto reads ‘Let it be according to your Word’ part of the Magnificat or Song of Mary in Luke 1.46-55 Lawrence Stanley Lee (18 September 1909 – 25 April 2011) was a British stained glass artist whose work spanned the latter half of the 20th century. He was best known for leading the project to create ten huge windows for the nave of the new Coventry Cathedral. His other work includes windows at Guildford and Southwark Cathedrals as well as a great number of works elsewhere in the UK, and some in Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Early Life Lee was born in Chelsea Hospital for Women on 18 September 1909. His family moved to Weybridge where his father, William, a chauffeur and engineer, had a garage near to the Booklands’ Race Track. Lawrence's mother, Rose, was deeply religious and it was this influence that gave him the appreciation of biblical symbolism that became an important feature of his work. His parents divorced and Lawrence moved with his mother to New Malden. At the local Methodist church he met Dorothy Tucker, later to become his wife. He left school at 14, but won a scholarship to Kingston School of Art. A further award in 1927 enabled him to attend the Royal College of Art, where he studied stained glass under Martin Travers, graduating in 1930.
