SPARTANS AND BULLDOGS DOMINATE CCHA ALL-CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM FSU’s Kunitz and MSU’s Liles are the only two first-team returnees.

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Michigan State and Ferris State captured all but one berth on the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s First-Team All-Conference squad this season. This marks the third time the Spartans have placed at least three players on the First Team. The Bulldogs, who have a combined five players on the two all-Conference teams, had two players selected to the First Team for the second straight year. Ohio State makes its first apperance since the 1998-99 season with one selection. Miami and Michigan were also represented on the Second Team. The teams, which includes five seniors, four juniors, two sophomores and one freshman, were selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches and are based on performance in league games. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.

Bulldog senior foward Chris Kunitz, the conference scoring champion with 51 points, and Ohio State junior forward R.J. Umberger, the conference’s second scoring leader, were unanimous choices at the forward position. Michigan State sophmore Jim Slater, who was a member of the all-Rookie team last season, completes the forward line. The Michigan State tandem of senior defensemen Brad Fast and John-Michael Liles, who were ranked third and fourth in conference scoring respectively, each received 10 first-place votes to each earn a spot on the First Team. Ferris State sophomore goaltender Mike Brown, also an all-Rookie honoree last season, makes his first appearance on the First-Team all-Conference, marking the first time the Bulldogs have had a netminder placed on the First Team.

Michigan freshman forward is the 12th freshman to be named to the Second Team. Ferris State sophomore Jeff Legue, who received three first-place votes, and Miami junior forward Mike Kompon round out the forward line. The Ferris State defensive duo of Troy Milam and Simon Mangos help give the Bulldogs three players on the Second Team for the first time. Ohio State junior goalie Mike Betz, who led the conference with the lowest goals-against average, is the all-Conference Second Team goalie.
