August 15, 2021: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary "Who is the child who, if he could, would not raise his good mother and place her in Paradise after her decease? This Mother of God died of love, and the love of her son resuscitated her." - St Francis de Sales

TODAY’S READINGS SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES First Reading — The vision concerning the woman Sunday: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin clothed with the sun (Revelation Mary 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab). Monday: Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time; Psalm — The queen stands at your right hand, St. Stephen of Hungary arrayed in gold (Psalm 45). Thursday: St. John Eudes Second Reading — Christ, the firstfruits; then those who Friday: St. Bernard belong to him (1 Corinthians 15:20- 27). Saturday: St. Pius X Gospel — Mary praises God in the Magnificat (Luke 1:39-56). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. THE DESTINY OF ALL MORTAL FLESH The celebration of today’s feast on a Sunday is unusual on our Roman READINGS FOR THE WEEK Catholic calendar. Our observance of the Lord’s Day is held in such Monday: Jgs 2:11-19; Ps 106:34-37, 39-40, 43ab, 44; high esteem that few other feasts replace it. Occasionally there is a feast—usually of one of the saints—in which the saving power of God Mt 19:16-22 in Christ is so uniquely focused that the Roman rite deems it worthy Tuesday: Jgs 6:11-24a; Ps 85:9, 11-14; Mt 19:23-30 of celebration on the Lord’s Day. Today is such a feast. Yet some are surprised at the brevity of the dogma in its entirety: “We pronounce, Wednesday: Jgs 9:6-15; Ps 21:2-7; Mt 20:1-16 declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Thursday: Jgs 11:29-39a; Ps 40:5, 7-10; Mt 22:1-14 Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly Friday: Ru 1:1, 3-6, 14b-16, 22; Ps 146:5-10; Mt glory.” The Roman never defined any specifics or 22:34-40 particulars about the event itself. It is not in the scriptures. There are no verifiable eyewitness accounts. At its core, the dogma reveals in Saturday: Ru 2:1-3, 8-11; 4:13-17; Ps 128:1b-5; Mt Mary the destiny of all mortal flesh, and reinforces our creedal belief 23:1-12 in resurrection of the body. This feast strengthens our faith, defined Sunday: Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b; Ps 34:2-3, 16-21; last week in Hebrews as the realization of things hoped for. We find, in Mary, that realization of what we all hope for, what Paul today Eph 5:21-32 [2a, 25-32]; Jn 6:60-69 affirms: “In Christ shall all be brought to life” (1 Corinthians 15:22). copyright (c) J. We refer to her contact Stephanie Tanner at [email protected] as Queen of Heaven. In the Old Testament the queen is the mother of the king, not his wife. David’s kingdom included a Queen of Heaven. This kingdom would be fulfilled in Jesus Christ. King Solomon’s queen mother asked for a favor. He replied,” Make your request, my mother. I will not refuse you.” (1 Kings: 2:19-20). At Cana Jesus did as Mary asked. Ask her to intercede for you. She will bring your prayers to her son, Jesus. Mother Mary, pray for us.

St. Francis has returned to all Masses inside. Weekday and weekend Masses are now offered in church. We are seeing growing attendance inside church at all the services. We continue to take precautions to make sure everyone is healthy, such as having ministers of the Eucharist wear masks and cleanse their hands often. Currently you don’t have to register to attend a Mass because we do not have capacity limits. It is such a pleasure to be able to come together in church and receive the Eucharist. Come see the new artwork on the windows at the Ministry Center! What a great visual message of our mission to evangelize. Just as Jesus walked with the 2 disciples on the Road to Emmaus, we are called to accompany others in true friendship and faith. And just as Jesus sat at table and broke bread with all, we are called to invite everyone to join us at our table to share life and God together.
