Yocum This dissertation examines the conception of sin and the practice of penance among Catholics in the United States from 1955 to 1975. It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance. -

Abbey - a community of monks or nuns, ruled by an abbot or abbess. Usually founded by a monastic order. Abbeys oftne owe some form of feudal obligation to a lord or higher organization. They are normally self-contained. Abjuration - renunciation, under oath, of heresy to the Christian faith, made by a Christian wishing to be reconciled with the Church. Accidie - term used in ascetical literature for spiritual sloth, boredom, and discouragement. Acolyte - a clerk in minor orders whose particular duty was the service of the altar. Advocate - lay protector and legal representative of a monastery. Advowson - the right of nominating or presenting a clergyman to a vacant living. Agistment - a Church rate, or tithe, charged on pasture land. Aisle - lateral division of the nave or chancel of a church. Alb - a full-length white linen garment, with sleeves and girdle, worn by the celebrant at mass under a chasuble. Almoner - officer of a monastery entrusted with dispensing alms to the poor and sick. Almonry - place from which alms were dispensed to the poor. Almuce - large cape, often with attached hood, of cloth turned down over the shoulders and lined with fur. Doctors of Divinity and canons wore it lined with gray fur. Cape was edged with little Ambulatory - aisle leading round an apse, usually encircling the choir of a church. Amice - a square of white linen, folded diagonally, worn by the celebrant priest, on the head or about the neck and shoulders. Anathema - condemnation of heretics, similar to major excommunication. Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses. -

Missionary, founder, reformer of the clergy, he crowded into a life of seventy-nine years so many and such varied accomplishments that one marvels how a single man could achieve so much. In addition to the activities of an incessant and many-sided apostolate, he wrote a number of valuable books, which rank him among the most prolific ascetic writers of the seventeenth century. For many years the devotional works of St. John Eudes were practically unknown.(1) Occasionally a volume was discovered in the library of some seminary or religious house. Many others preserved in manuscript form were lost in the chaos of the French Revolution(2) At the beginning of the present century the sons of St. John Eudes united in a tribute of filial piety to bring out a complete edition of the works of their spiritual father, seeking them in public and private libraries throughout the world(3) About twenty volumes were found and edited in 1905 by the late Fathers Charles Lebrun, C.J.M., and Joseph Dauphin, (1).Before the French Revolution the works of St. John Eudes were popular in France. -

DOROTHEUS OF GAZA AND BENEDICT OF NURSIA* NIKOLAUS EGENDER At the founding of the Ecumenical Council of the Churches and its first General Assembly in Amsterdam in1948, the first General Secretary, Pastor W. Wissert Hooft, expressed the following basic principle: “The more we draw near to Christ as communities and believers, the more we draw near to one another.” During the last fifty years this principle of the ecumenical method has spoken to religious communities in their significant role of striving for the unity of Christians and for their spiritual renewal. In the sixth century a contemporary of Saint Benedict, Dorotheus of Gaza, held the same principle that he expressed by the comparison of a circle “that represented God as the center and the various ways of human life as the spokes. If the saints who desire to draw near to God move toward the center . they draw nearer to one another—one to the other—as they draw nearer to God. The more they approach God, the more they approach one another.”1 “The more one is united with the neighbor the more one is united with God.”2 These words are spoken in the context of brotherly love. But do they not affirm our experience today of the impact of the spiritual renewal on the way to the reunion of separated Christians? In an international Congress on the ecumenical Dimension of the Rule of Benedict (RB) a consideration of the Christian orient is essential. Accordingly, it seemed to me not without significance, to get to know better this contemporary of Saint Benedict, Dorotheus of Gaza. -

The spirituality of societies of apostolic life Robert P. Maloney, C.M. Meeting of Members of Societies of Apostolic Life Ariccia, Italy November 23-25, 1997 All of us have noted, with some joy, the renewed interest in spirituality today. Some of its manifestations are wonderfully healthy. Others tend toward the bizarre.1 But one thing is clear. There exists a hunger, "a profound and authentic desire of 20th century humanity for wholeness in the midst of fragmentation, for community in the face of isolation and loneliness, for liberating transcendence, for meaning in life, for values that endure."2 Our members too yearn for wholeness, for meaning, for transcendence. The Lord calls us, as leaders in the Church, to try to satisfy their longing. We have many responsibilities as superiors general: decision-making, planning, meetings, personal interviews. But I suggest to you today, my brothers and sisters, that there is nothing more valuable that we can do for our congregations than to hold up before their eyes a captivating vision; an ultimate concern that will enable them to integrate life and give it away as a gift; a deep, vibrant, holistic spirituality. The topic you have asked me to address, "The Spirituality of Societies of Apostolic Life" is very difficult. It would surely be easier to speak about the spiritualities (in the plural) of Societies of Apostolic Life. But that would be an endless task since our heritages are really quite varied. For example, Bérulle, Vincent de Paul, and John Eudes, though contemporaries and collaborators, handed on to their congregations distinctive ways of approaching God.
