“T”Association Newsletter Fall 2011 Design Editor and Contributing Writer: ErinAshley Baker “The noblest search is the search for excellence” Katherine Whitfield “T”ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER FALL 2011 Joddie W. Witte President MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Newsletter Editor [email protected] Kyle Harrell Vice-President Don Coryell Executive Director (512) 245-2220 [email protected] Let me start out by saying thank you to the “T” association members who have responded to the recent mail-out for membership renewal for this year. Don Coryell said the initial response from athletic alumni has been excellent with a significant increase in the “All American Level” membership ($250 or more). As you know, the “T” association cannot operate without the financial support of the athletic alumni. A membership brochure was mailed to all athletic alumni during the first week in June. If you have not mailed in your membership donation, let me encourage you to do so at your earliest convenience. In the event that you did not receive the “T” association membership brochure, a membership application for is included in this newsletter. Secondly, I would like to thank Dr. Glenn Peavy for his research and for writing the article “A Tribute to Coach Oscar Strahan.” The article was mailed to all “T” association members during the week of June 13. If you have not received a copy of the publication, please contact Executive Director Don Coryell at [email protected] . The article will give you some insight to one of the greatest athletic directors in the history of SWT/Texas State. He spent forty-one years at SWT as a football, basketball, and track coach. I was privileged to take some classes under Coach Strahan from 1956-57 and can still remember today the research projects that he had his classes conduct as part of the curriculum. I am sure you will enjoy the special “T” association tribute to Oscar Strahan. All of our new athletic alumni who were not able to get to know Coach Strahan will have the chance to learn that he was a special person who cared about the athletes and those who majored in physical education. He established a new foundation for the 1 “T” association, the criteria for entry into the Hall of Honor which still exists today. PASSING ON THE TORCH Let me also share some exciting information about a project that the “T” association has discussed “T” Association welcomes new President and Vice President during the past several years. In May of 2010, a Strahan Coliseum Master Plan was produced by the design team of O’Connell Robertson Architects and Engineers to identify potential enhancements to upgrade Strahan Coliseum. One of the concepts within the plan is to use the Kyle Harrell-President main hall on the southwest side of the building to create a focused display area and destination I played and coached under Bob Debesse, was taught point within the facility for a “hall of fame” type space. This area could be used to recognize past by Coach Keith Hoffman, and coached by David Bailiff. athletic alumni, showcase championship teams and become a new home for the Hall of Honor area. It will hold numerous opportunities to preserve the history of Bobcat Athletics. These are just a few “T” men who influenced me, all of whom were passionate about the T-Association and Our board of directors is discussing the possiblility of designing an athletic alumni recogntion area impressed upon us the importance of being involved in the T-Association. I have always appreciated and in Strahan Coliseum that would highlight our Hall of Honor members and other deserving athletic looked up to the T-men that came before me and I want recognitions. Let me be clear that the proposed project at this point is just conceptual and has not to do the same for the athletes that have come after been apprvoed by the administration of Texas State University. The Board of Directors, however, me by making our events a welcome place for Bobcats plan to discuss the potential benefits of this area for the “T” Association, and whether this is a of all ages to connect with teammates and old friends, project our members would like to see happen. We hope to have more information shortly about and make new friends. this project. We want the T-Association to foster an atmosphere Finally, I want to close by thanking the “T” association board for your confidence and support that encourages involvement and support of Bobcat of myself as your president for the past three years. I want to congratulate Kyle Harrell as he athletics and Texas State. We want the T-Association assumes the president’s position and Julie Brooks Muegge as she becomes our vice-president. to continue to be a place where lettermen of all ages Both of these board members have worked hard and are ready to provide outstanding leadership can re-connect and enjoy being part of our proud past and exciting future. for our association. Julie Brooks Muegge will become the first female officer in the history of the “T” association… Kudos to Julie. Congratualtions also to the 2011 Hall of Honor inductees: Aubrey Eat 'em up! Horner, Claude Mathis, and Rudy Bowles. Again, thanks to the athletic alumni for your continued support. Your support is necessary for the “T” association to continue to move forward on behalf of all “T” Members. Have a great fall and hopefully plenty of rain to fill the empty stock tanks in Texas! Julie Brooks Muegge-Vice President I chose to be a part of the “T” Association because I believe Thank you, it is my duty to give back to Texas State University and the athletic department. While attending Texas State University, I received a full Joddie Witte athletic scholarship which included tuition, fees, living 2010-2011 “T” Association President expenses etc. for my position on the Women’s Basketball team from 2000-2004. I am very grateful that I was able to have such an opportunity and assistance and I feel my time and monetary donations are the best way I can show my gratitude to the school. As vice president of the “T” Association,” my goals are the same as they were during my time in the position of board member. I would like to encourage and motivate Texas State alumni and “T” Association Athletic alumni members to get involved at Texas State, visit the campus, attend athletic events, and to donate time and/or money when and where they can. Every little bit can help Texas State University and the Athletic Department thrive. The twelve-minute test, which measures “cognitive ability,” has been shown to have a disparate impact on minorities in various employment situations. This Note contends that the NFL’s use of the Wonderlic also has a disparate impact because of its effect on a player’s draft status and ultimately his salary. The test cannot be justified by business necessity because there is no correlation between a player’s Wonderlic score and their on-field performance. As such, this Note calls for the creation of a football-specific intelligence test that would be less likely to have a disparate impact than the Wonderlic, while also being sufficiently job-related and more reliable in predicting a player’s success.
