Butler THE GENOMICS REVOLUTION AND YELLOWSTONE Genetic research and engineering have infiltrated our daily lives in countless ways. New advances due to genomics are in the news almost every day. Genomics involves identifying the structure and function of genomes, which consist of the genetic infor- mation in individuals. Prior to the 1980s, scientists had a limited ability to study genetic material called DNA, which is short for deoxyribonucleic acid. Unlike today, they could not identify criminals using forensics, diagnose certain medical conditions and inherited diseases, or genetically modify plant crops for resistance to diseases and drought. In 1985, scientists invented an approach to make many copies of a small amount of genetic material. Scientists called this replication a polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A microorganism, Thermus aquaticus, discovered in a Yellowstone hot spring, provided the critical ingredient, Taq polymerase, to make this reaction possible. Taq polymerase assists in the steps necessary to replicate DNA and can withstand the heat necessary for the procedure. Today, laboratories produce many versions of this enzyme for a wide range of studies and applications. The technology that emerged from studying a Yellowstone hot spring now helps us understand, manage, and conserve the web of life in the Yellowstone area and throughout the world. 88 Greater Yellowstone’s Mountain Ungulates WHAT IS DNA AND HOW DO WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS USE IT? Draft 4-10-19.3 CHAPTER 4 FURBEARING ANIMAL HUNTING OR TRAPPING SEASONS Section 1. Authority. This regulation is promulgated by authority of Wyoming Statute § 23-1-302, § 23-2-303, § 23-2-304, § 23-2-305 and § 23-3-109. Section 2. Definitions. Definitions shall be as set forth in Title 23, Wyoming Statutes, Commission regulations, and the Commission also adopts the following definitions: (a) “Drainage” means all lands within the watershed of a named river or stream, including all tributaries and standing waters whichthat drain into that the named river or stream. (b) “Leg-hold Trap” means any device using a mechanical trigger that springs the jaws or loop shut for capturing furbearing or predatory animals. (c) “Live Trap” means any device designed to capture or trap a live animal inside a cage or structure. Such traps include, but are not limited to box traps and cage traps. (d) “Owner” means the person who physically sets any trap or snare in any fashion that may result in the take of any furbearing or predatory animal. (e) “Pet” means any domestic or tamed animal kept for companionship or pleasure. (f) “Quick-kill Body-grip Trap” means a device that closes around the body or head of the animal in such a manner as to almost immediately kill the animal caught. (g) “Raw Fur” means the untanned hide or skin, or the unskinned carcass of a furbearing animal. (h) “Snare” means a device consisting of a loop with no mechanical trigger for capturing furbearing or predatory animals. (j) “Tamper” means to disturb, obstruct, damage, steal or interfere with any legally placed trap or snare except for releasing any pet or livestock from a trap or snare. -

Dear Anglers, Wyoming is a state of contrasts—high mountains, sagebrush covered plains, grasslands and other ecosystems offer unparalleled outdoor opportunities. Moisture arrives as snow and rain, averaging from 6 to 15 inches annually. Wyoming’s waters offer a broad range of fishing opportunities; enough to whet the angling interest of just about anyone. People from near and far come to fish Wyoming waters. Rivers such as the Snake and North Platte are internationally known. Others like the Green and Tongue attract regional and local anglers with excellent fishing. Streams without big reputations often have fish populations comparable to the better-known waters. The fishing is as diverse as the landscape itself. You can boat, float, wade or shore fish on powerful rivers, small alpine streams, lakes, reservoirs and ponds. There are four native cutthroat trout species plus rainbow, brown, brook, golden, tiger and lake trout. Anglers can visit streams and lakes in the wilderness, the high plains and near interstate highways—in short, just about anywhere in the state. The variety of the Wyoming fishing experiences seems almost limitless. If your tastes run to cold-water lakes, Wyoming has some of the best—Flaming Gorge, Jackson Lake, Fremont Lake and hundreds of tiny alpine tarns in the Wind River Range and Big Horn Mountains. Or maybe you prefer cool-water opportunities. The North Platte’s chain of reservoirs offers popular walleye fishing in combination with exceptional angling for rainbow and brown trout. -
