Welch6,2 & Michael Buckley 7 Published: xx xx xxxx The submersion of Late Pleistocene shorelines and poor organic preservation at many early archaeological sites obscure the earliest efects of humans on coastal resources in the Americas. We used collagen fngerprinting to identify bone fragments from middens at four California Channel Island sites that are among the oldest coastal sites in the Americas (~12,500-8,500 cal BP). We document Paleocoastal human predation of at least three marine mammal families/species, including northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris), eared seals (Otariidae), and sea otters (Enhydra lutris). Otariids and elephant seals are abundant today along the Pacifc Coast of North America, but elephant seals are rare in late Holocene (<1500 cal BP) archaeological sites. Our data support the hypotheses that: (1) marine mammals helped fuel the peopling of the Americas; (2) humans afected marine mammal biogeography millennia before the devastation caused by the historic fur and oil trade; and (3) the current abundance and distribution of recovering pinniped populations on the California Channel Islands may mirror a pre-human baseline. Recent archaeological, genomic, and paleoecological research identifes the Pacifc Coast as one of the gateways for the peopling of the Americas1–8. California’s Channel Islands fgure prominently in this research with ~13,000- 11,000 year old sites that contain human remains, sophisticated hunting tools, and diverse faunal assemblages3,9,10. -
What Do You Do When a Northern Elephant Seal Visits Your Beach?

This female northern elephant seal was recovering from injuries when it showed up at Joanne's house. Photo by Joanne. Joanne had a big surprise waiting when she returned home one afternoon in July. There was something on her beach. At first, she thought it was just a large seal, but as a recent graduate of WSU’s Beach Naturalist class and a trained “seal sitter,” something about it was different. Looking through binoculars she saw it had black whiskers, small fore flippers, and no external ear flaps (making it a true seal). But the size was what gave the visitor’s identity away. It was a northern elephant seal (Mirounga angustirostris) – the largest true seal in the northern hemisphere. Females grow up to 10 feet long and weigh up to 1,300 pounds and males can even grow larger, reaching 13 feet long and 4,000 pounds. The seal resting on the beach in July. Photo by Joanne. Joanne contacted Betsy Carlson, Citizen Science Coordinator for the Port Townsend Marine Science Center and learned that a badly injured female northern elephant seal had been seen on a nearby Olympic Peninsula beach in April. The seal in front of Joanne’s home had some scars and they determined it was probably the same animal. -

This idiosyncrasy results from pseudogenization of the gene encoding UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 1A6, the major species-conserved phenol detoxification enzyme. Here, we established the phylogenetic timing of disruptive UGT1A6 mutations and explored the hypothesis that gene inactivation in cats was enabled by minimal exposure to plant-derived toxicants. Fixation of the UGT1A6 pseudogene was estimated to have occurred between 35 and 11 million years ago with all extant Felidae having dysfunctional UGT1A6. -

THORSON Synopsis Sex differences in the foraging behaviour of adult northern elephant seals, Mirounga angustirostris, are predicted from the great disparity in size between the sexes, males being 1.5-10 times larger than females. Males must consume approximately three times more prey per day than females. By examining the diving behaviour, during which all foraging occurs, our aim was to elucidate how males do this and when the strategy develops. Dive data were collected by microcomputer time-depth recorders attached to the backs of free-ranging seals (nine adult males, 10 adult females, seven juvenile males and six juvenile females) during periods at sea ranging from one to three months. The sexes foraged in different locations and exhibited differences in foraging-type dives, suggesting different foraging strategies and, possibly, different prey. Females moved steadily across the north-eastern Pacific from the coast to as far as 150 oW, in the range 44--52oN, foraging daily en route. Males migrated to areas along continental margins off the state of Washington, to as far as the northern Gulf of Alaska and the eastern Aleutian Islands, where they exhibited concentrated foraging. Female foraging was exclusively pelagic, with dive depth varying with diel vertical movements of prey, such as squid, in the deep scattering layer. -

The Greeks associated them with both the sea and sun and were considered to be under the protection of the gods Poseidon and Apollo. Pinnipeds can be found in facilities around the world, as their large size and playfulness make them popular attractions. Zoologist Georges Cuvier noted during the 19th century that wild seals show considerable fondness for humans and stated that they are second only to some monkeys among wild animals in their easily tamability. Francis Galton noted in his landmark paper on domestication that seals were a spectacular example of an animal that would most likely never be domesticated despite their friendliness and desire for comfort due to the fact that they serve no practical use for humans. Some modern exhibits have rocky backgrounds with artificial haul-out sites and a pool, while others have pens with small rocky, elevated shelters where the animals can dive into their pools. More elaborate exhibits contain deep pools that can be viewed underwater with rock-mimicking cement as haul-out areas. The most common pinniped species kept in captivity is the California sea lion as it is both easy to train and adaptable. Other species popularly kept include the grey seal and harbor seal. Larger animals like walruses and Steller sea lions are much less common. -

The Pinnipeds: Seals, Sea Lions, and Walruses harbor seals California sea lions The word pinniped means fin-footed, and refers to the marine mammals that have front and hind flippers. These include the seals, sea lions, and walruses. Most of these animals live in the ocean but are able to come on land for long periods of time. Millions of years ago, the ancestors of pinnipeds lived on land. These were probably weasel or bear-like animals that spent more and more time in the ocean, and eventually adapted to this marine environment. There are three families of pinnipeds: phocids, otariids, and odobenids, and each of them is a little different. One family is the true seals (phocids). There are many different kinds of true seals, but you can always recognize them by looking at their ears and flippers. True seals have ear holes, but no external ear flaps. They also have small flippers and move on land by flopping along on their bellies. At sea, they move their rear flippers back and forth like a fish’s tail to power themselves along. Two of the true seal species that live in the Pacific Ocean are the harbor seal and the northern elephant seal. Even though they are both true seals, they are very different. Harbor seals have spotted fur and tend to stay near shore. Males and females are about the same size, reaching a maximum of 300 pounds (140 kg). Northern elephant seals are grayish and tan in color, only come onshore to mate, give birth, and molt (shed) their fur.
