Welcome to the 2014 Audemars Piguet QEII Cup to be held on Sunday 27th April.

The showcase race day is among Hong Kong’s most glamorous occasions, mixing elite sport with high-end chic, and this 20th international edition of the prestigious 2000m contest promises to be one of the hottest ever staged. Five top-class overseas raiders are set to take their places in the 12-strong field; among them the exciting South African champion Vercingetorix, France’s outstanding stalwart Cirrus Des Aigles, and the Japanese classic winner Epiphaneia.

In the FORM GUIDE, the PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS table provides you with a bird-eye's view of the race. This at-a-glance guide gives you a full form summary of the horses in a simple and concise table.

Another handy tool is the INTERNATIONAL RATINGS CHART. In weight-for-age races like the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup, generally speaking, the higher a horse's rating, which is based on racing performance, the better its chance to win.

A preliminary SPEED CHART has been included to assist in identifying likely positions in running. Please note that this is preliminary only and the full Speed Map will be available after barrier draw in the SpeedPOWER Form Guide on www.hkjc.com/english/formguide/formguide.asp.

If you need further information and analysis, just flip over to the next section where you will find the COMPREHENSIVE PAST PERFORMANCE of the horses. Also included is the FORM ANALYSIS, which highlights the notable achievements and racing characteristics of each horse. Another feature is the RATINGS HISTORY CHART. This chart indicates the quality and consistency of a horse's previous 10 starts through a graphical illustration of the ratings achieved in these races.

This information is correct as of 15th April 2014.

Shipped to Dubai thereafter. Won 1800m turf handicap at Meydan to start 2014 and followed up there with impressive win in G1 Jebel Hatta (1800m). Raced prominently on those occasions. Dropped in latest start in G1 Dubai Duty Free (1800m) but advanced to brief lead 400m out. No match for Just A Way and finished 6 ¼ lengths 2nd. Seems well-suited by good ground.

Barande-Barbe, Corine Cirrus Des Aigles Aged 56, Corine Barande-Barbe took out her licence in 1991 and is based at Chantilly. Until recent seasons the best horse she had trained remained Carling, winner of the G1 French Oaks and Prix Vermeille in 1995, but others of note have been Red Roses Story, Perfect Vintage and Jeopardy. Cirrus Des Aigles has been her ambassador in recent years and was rated the world’s best horse in training at the end of 2012 after pushing Frankel in the latter’s final race, the G1 Champion Stakes at Ascot. Cirrus Des Aigles had won that contest in 2011 and in early 2012 he added the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic and G1 Prix Ganay. She saddled her stable star to finish 5th in the 2009 HK Vase, and 7th then 5th in the next two renewals of the HK Cup. The gelding was a withdrawal on the eve of the 2012 HK Cup due to injury and Barande-Barbe patiently guided him back to form for a second successive win in the G2 Prix Dollar and runner-up finish in the G1 Champion Stakes last year. He was then 3rd in the 2013 HK Cup and 2nd in this year’s G1 Dubai Sheema Classic.

Chang, Michael Dibayani Aged 52, Michael Chang served three years as an apprentice jockey with trainer David Wilson in the UK before returning to Hong Kong in the late 1980s to commence his career with the Club. He worked his way through the ranks before becoming Assistant Trainer to Gary T K Ng. He then served Alex S T Wong, David Hayes and Sean Woods in the same capacity before taking out a full licence in the 2005/06 season. He has improved his scores in each of the last four seasons, notching 40 wins in the 2012/13 season, 13 more than the previous term. He has 16 wins this term for a career total of 193 wins (as of 14 April). Season 2012/13 also brought his first Group race win thanks to Vital Flyer in the HKG3 Sha Tin Sprint Trophy and Rich Tapestry took the HKG2 Sprint Cup later that term. He also notched a first win outside Hong Kong when Noble Alpha won the Macau HK Trophy in April, 2013. This year, he saddled Rich Tapestry to win the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal and finish runner-up in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan, Dubai.

de Kock, Mike Sanshaawes, Vercingetorix Aged 50, de Kock won his first G1 just four months into his training career in 1989. He has won every major in South Africa at least once and trained the South African Triple Crown winner, Horse Chestnut, as well as the crack mares Ipi Tombe and Igugu. He has enjoyed considerable success at the Dubai World Cup Carnival winning the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic, the UAE Derby five times, both the Dubai Duty Free and the Godolphin Mile twice with Soft Falling Rain winning the latter last year, and in 2013 he also added the G1 Al Quoz Sprint to the list thanks to Shea Shea. Vercingetorix landed the G1 Daily News 2000 last year and the G1 Jebel Hatta in March. He is also a force when he heads to Hong Kong, winning the APQEII Cup with Irridescence (2006) and Archipenko (2008) and the 2008 Hong Kong Cup with Eagle Mountain. As well as his strong overseas base in Dubai, he now has another satellite yard in England.

Fownes, Caspar Packing Whiz Aged 46, Caspar Fownes assisted his trainer father Lawrie for several seasons before taking over the mantle in 2003/04. He eclipsed his father's best season stats in his rookie year with 44 wins. In 2006/07 he won his first trainers' premiership and added his second premiership in 2008/09. His most famous victories include The Duke's win in the G1 HK Mile of 2006, Green Birdie's win in the G1 KrisFlyer International Sprint in 2010 and Lucky Nine's wins in the G1 HK Sprint of 2011 and the 2013 KrisFlyer International Sprint. He also saddled Lucky Nine to a nose 2nd in Australia’s G1 Manikato Stakes in October and to victory in the HKG1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize in 2013 and 2014. He has a good strike-rate with his runners at Happy Valley where on 20 June 2010 he sent out six winners in a single day, equalling the record in Hong Kong's professional racing era. His 61 wins in 2012/13 also included Lucky Nine's G2 Jockey Club Sprint and took him to 4th in the trainers’ premiership. His current HK career total stands at 571, including 34 this term (as of 14 April).

Gibson, Richard Akeed Mofeed Aged 44, formerly French-based Englishman Richard Gibson gained his grounding in the art with Frenchmen Pascal Bary and Henri-Alex Pantall as well as Americans Bill Mott and Gary Jones. He took out his first licence at Chantilly in 1996 and struck gold as early as 1999 when Lady Of Chad won the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac en route to becoming European Champion Juvenile Filly. He has trained the winners of seven G1s altogether, most notably Akeed Mofeed in the 2013 G1 HK Cup. Doctor Dino won successive runnings of the G1 HK Vase and also won the G1 Man O'War Stakes at Belmont, USA. Akeed Mofeed won the 2013 Hong Kong Derby, while Gold-Fun won the same year’s Hong Kong Classic Mile. Gold-Fun also took the G2 Jockey Club Mile in November and the HKG1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup in March this year. His other high-class trainees have been Marotta, Lune D'Or, Cut Quartz, Mores Wells, Swedish Shave, and for a short spell Dunaden. Gibson, who relocated to Hong Kong ahead of the 2011/12 season, saddled 35 winners in his debut HK season and backed that up in 2012/13 with 32 wins. This season he has 26 wins for a HK career total of 95 wins (as of 14 April).

Moore, John Designs On Rome, Dominant, Military Attack, Same World Aged 64, Moore has been involved in Hong Kong racing since the professional era commenced in 1971 and is Hong Kong's winning-most trainer with 1,365 career wins (as of 14 April). He began training in 1985, before which he held the position of assistant trainer to his late famous father, George. In 2007 he prepared an international G1 double thanks to Viva Pataca in the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup and Able One in the Champions Mile and, in a feat perhaps unprecedented in the sport, won the same two races with the same two horses three years later. Moore is the first only trainer ever to send out 1,000 winners in Hong Kong and has been the leader in prize-money won for the past eight seasons. His total prize money of HK$102.2 million won in 2012/13 raised his career total to over HK$1.2 billion. After a 17-year gap, he clinched a sixth Trainers' Championship with a strong finish to the 2010/11 season. He finished second in the table in the 2011/12 season with 54 winners. His big-race wins also include Xtension's two G1 Champions Miles (2011 & 2012) and Able One's G1 Hong Kong Mile (2011). Last season Military Attack was crowned Horse of the Year after wins that included the G1 AP QEII Cup and the G1 Singapore Airlines International Cup, the latter being Moore’s first overseas win. This term Moore dominated the HK Four-Year-Old Series with Designs On Rome notching the trainer a third HK Derby, with stablemate Able Friend second. He scored a second overseas success when Sterling City took the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen in March.

Sumii, Katsuhiko Epiphaneia Aged 50, Katsuhiko Sumii is the most successful international campaigner in the Japanese training ranks having won the G1 HK Mile with Hat Trick (2005), the G1 American Oaks with Cesario (2005), recorded a one-two finish in the 2006 Melbourne Cup with Delta Blues and Pop Rock, won the G1 Dubai World Cup with Victoire Pisa (2011) and the G1 APQEII Cup with Rulership (2012). He has won at least 30 races at G1 level and trained the great Vodka to her seven G1 victories, among them the Japan Cup, the Tenno Sho (Autumn) and the Yasuda Kinen twice. He was crowned the JRA’s champion trainer for the first time in 2011 and for the second time last year with 56 wins. His current stable stars are last season’s G1 Kikuka Sho victor Epiphaneia and G1 Japan Cup runner-up Denim And Ruby.

Yahagi, Yoshito Uncoiled Aged 53, he received his JRA trainers’ licence in 2004 and has since risen to rank as one of the top JRA trainers. He has won no less than 20 Group races in Japan, including G1 successes with Grand Prix Boss (2010 Asahi Hai Futurity, 2011 NHK Mile Cup), but his greatest success came with Deep Brillante in the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) of 2012. With 49 wins last year, he finished third in the JRA trainers’ standings.

Angland, Tye Aged 24, Tye Angland’s career as a jockey began in 2005, following a successful junior career in rodeo. In just his second season he was Champion Apprentice Jockey in Sydney and New South Wales with 127 winners, a total which put him in third place overall behind Darren Beadman and Zac Purton. Licensed as a senior jockey during the 2008/2009 season he recorded G1 victories in Australia on Black Piranha in the 2009 Stradbroke Handicap and on Alverta in the 2010 Coolmore Classic. He also rode Alverta into 3rd place in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket, England.
