They became a leading force in the processes which led to the Polish October’. Jan Nowak-Jeziorański in 1994 I begin with three quotations which I treat as mottoes for my ar ticle. They view the sad years 1945-56 as if from three standpoints and though they do not exhaust the whole gamut of references, they show the complexity of that era and the difficulty of giving it a black-and-white appraisal. I should like to start by specifying the character of this paper. The subject ‘Intellectuals and Stalinism’ has received hundreds of various types of analyses and comments. THE CASE OF ROMANIA ABSTRACT The study reviews the circumstances under which fiction was published in Romania under the 50 years of communism – censorship, writers’ associations, publishing houses – and illustrates them with Norman Manea’s essays in his volume On Clowns: the Dictator and the Artist . KEY WORDS: fiction writing, Communism, Romania. [I]n a country where, until very recently, historiography and political philosophy were not allowed to question official ideology, literature often had to perform that function under the cover of its metaphoric indirection . (Călinescu 1991: 246) This study starts from the obvious fact that reading literature in countries under com- munism was a quite different experience than reading literature in the West. It begins by detailing the differences, starting with an analysis of the historical evolution of the role of the intellectual in East-Central European countries, as presented in Leon Volo- vici’s volume The Emergence of the Writer in Romanian Culture (Apariţia scriitorului în cultura română , 2004) It continues with an analysis of ‘the political mission of writers in the “people’s democracies,”’ based on Lucia Dragomir’s study in the collect- ive volume The Socialist Transformation. Politics of the Communist Regime between Ideology and Administration (“Transformarea socialistă.” Politici ale regimului comu- nist între ideologie şi administraţie , 2009) in order to identify how and why fiction writers there ended up committing, in Manea’s words, “the sin of dilettantism, (...) a remnant of the communist period, when the reader wanted to find in literature what he could not find in history, sociology, psychology, etc. -

Topic selection takes into account the vaunted “specificity” which Milosz injects into discussion topics ranging from literary commentary and comparative theology to straight history and shrewd political observation and analysis. This was way out of my normal box; and maybe that's why I couldn't get it or into it. Since his works had been banned in Poland by the communist government, this was the first time that many Poles became aware of him. Condition: Good. And indeed we must even support Him. The Party constantly stresses its desire for good literature; at the same time, it creates such a tense atmosphere of propaganda that writers feel compelled to resort to the most primitive and oversimplified literary techniques. -

From 1961 to 1998 he was a professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1980 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Life Czeslaw Milosz was born on June 30, 1911 in the village of Šeteniai (Kedainiai district, Kaunas County) on the border between two Lithuanian historical regions of Samogitia and Aukštaitija in central Lithuania (then part of Russian empire). He was a son of Aleksander Milosz, a civil engineer, and Weronika, née Kunat. His brother, Andrzej Milosz (1917–2002), a Polish journalist, translator of literature and of film subtitles into Polish, was a documentary-film producer who created some Polish documentaries about his famous brother. Milosz emphasized his identity with the multi-ethnic Grand Duchy of Lithuania, a stance that led to ongoing controversies; he refused to categorically identify himself as either a Pole or a Lithuanian. He once said of himself: "I am a Lithuanian to whom it was not given to be a Lithuanian." Milosz was fluent in Polish, Lithuanian, Russian, English and French. Milosz memorialized his Lithuanian childhood in a 1981 novel, The Issa Valley, and in the 1959 memoir Native Realm. -

By Charles Edel “Some were recalcitrant; some tried not to show how much his favor meant to them; some were openly servile. In a short time, he was surrounded by a court of yes-men who frowned when he frowned or guffawed loudly whenever he deigned to tell a joke.” Frustrated with the inability of the West to understand why so many Eastern European intellectuals actively collaborated with their country’s autocratic regimes, and darkly amused by the attraction of many Western elites to autocratic governments, the Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz penned these words in 1951 in his most well- known work, “The Captive Mind.” Milosz would later become a U.S. citizen, working as a professor at the University of California at Berkeley and winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980. But it was this early work that would gain him lasting literary and political relevance. The book was written shortly after Milosz walked away from his diplomatic post as a cultural attache for the communist government of Poland and defected to the West. It was his attempt to explain why individuals moved along the path from resistance to surrender, submission and ultimately advocacy of a system of government they had detested. Written to explain what intellectual life was like behind the Soviet Union’s Iron Curtain, Milosz’s work is freshly relevant today. Part political philosophy, part literary criticism and part a personal memoir, “The Captive Mind” sought to “create afresh the stages by which the mind gives way to compulsion from without, and to trace the road along which men in people’s democracies are led to orthodoxy.” The people’s democracies to which he was referring, though, were anything but democratic. -

56 Intellectuals and Totalitarianism Intellectuals and Totalitarianism by Teodoro Petkoff Why is there so much uncritical admiration for Hugo Chávez and his policies in international circles among intellectuals and the left? Many of these people are quick to criticize governments on the right but give Chávez their unconditional support. How do you explain this phenomenon? Teodoro Petkoff: Mark Lilla, an American, wrote an important book called The Reckless Mind: Intellectuals in Politics. I recommend it because he examines the fascination of 20th century intellectuals with strongmen and totalitarianism. Lilla draws on the examples of Heidegger, who was a member of the Nazi party; Carl Schmitt, the theoretician of Nazism; and the politics of the Frenchman Jacques Derrida, to examine the attraction of some intellectuals to totalitarianism. I know my own country’s intellectuals very well. The majority of Venezuelan intellectuals are against Chávez. This is a revolution without intellectuals. Outside Venezuela, there is a different perception. David Viñas is a very well-known Argentine writer. He told me once, “I must support Chávez — he is giving cheap oil to Fidel!” Regardless of what is happening in Venezuela, all Viñas cares about is Chávez giving cheap oil to Cuba. We saw the same tendency with the Soviet Union and Stalin. Around the world, well-known intellectuals, poets CLAS staff. Photo by Teodoro Petkoff. and writers — Louis Aragon in France; Rafael Alberti, in Spain; Pablo Neruda, Gabriel García Márquez and, for some time, Mario Vargas Llosa in Latin America; and many others — supported Soviet communism uncritically. Having only a superfi cial understanding of the character of totalitarian societies, what they espoused to their audiences was an irresponsible abuse of their role. -

The approach of the first five chapters, while theoretically informed, is primarily narrative and descriptive. Occasionally he stopped and looked through the window. The view of deathly still trees increased his sense of aimlessness and disintegration. He kept adding new figures to his picture, one after another. It took him two hours to cover a whole envelope with flowers and geometrical shapes; it takes me much 2 more time to reveal the state of his mind. The letter in the envelope was from his wife, Janina, who had been apart from him for the past ten months. She wrote to her husband about their little son, whom he had never seen. It had been three months since he had decided to flee Poland, his homeland, and he had lived incognito in Paris in fear of being kidnapped or even murdered. He had spent many sleepless nights since his decision to break with the Polish communist government. This act had changed everything in his life. Czeslaw Milosz was a Polish poet, writer, and translator, who was born in 1911. He survived WW II in Poland. In 1946, he became a diplomat representing the Polish communist government in Washington and New York. -
