[email protected] Abstract. This research introduces the concepts of virtual heritage in the field of architecture. It then continues with the fundamentals of virtual heritage (VH) metadata structure adopted from the UNESCO guidelines. The key highlights to the content of e-Warisan SENIBINA will be demonstrated via techniques to reconstruct heritage buildings towards a collaborative architectural virtual heritage experience as closely to originally design features. The virtual re- construction will be based on the techniques suggested by the research team tested earlier in a smaller scale of advanced lighting technique for virtual heritage representations. This research will suggest (1) content preparation for creating collaborative architectural heritage, (2) effective low-polygon modelling solutions that incorporate global illumination (GI) lighting for real-time simulation and (3) texturing techniques to accommodate reasonable detailing and give the essence of the VH. Pitana 3 Abstract Gebyog is a traditional Javanese house wall made of wood with a particular pattern. The shape of Javanese houses and gebyog develop over periods of culture and government until today. The shapes of gebyog are greatly influenced by various culture, such as Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, and Chinese. The Hindu and Buddhist influences of are evident in the shapes of the ornaments and their meanings. The Chinese influence through Islamic culture developing in the archipelago is strong, mainly in terms of the gebyog patterns, wood construction techniques, ornaments, and coloring techniques. The nuance has been felt in the era of Majapahit, Demak, Mataram and at present. The use of ganja mayangkara in Javanese houses of the Majapahit era, the use of Chinese-style gunungan ornaments at the entrance to the Sunan Giri tomb, the saka guru construction technique of Demak mosque, the Kudusnese and Jeparanese gebyog motifs, and the shape of the gebyog patangaring of the house. THE LEGACY OF COLONIAL REFORMATION OF SYARIAH IN NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES AND BRITISH MALAYA: A COMPARATIVE ESSAY ©2001 Charleston C. K. Wang I. Introduction The Federation of Malaya became independent from Great Britain on August 31, 1957. Indonesia attained statehood from the Netherlands on December 27, 1949 after having already proclaimed independence on August 17, 1945. Centuries before, both the British and Dutch came to Southeast Asia with the same objective – to set-up colonies that benefited themselves. Indeed, the British and Dutch were rivals in the race for colonies, two among other European nations in the age of colonialism. (a) The Indonesian Archipelago The Dutch were not the first Europeans to arrive in the archipelago: the Portuguese came in 1511, after their conquest of the Islamic sultanate of Malacca on the eastern Malay Peninsula. The Portuguese were followed by the Spaniards.1 Created in 1602, the Dutch East India Company or V.O.C. (for Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie), founded Batavia on Java in 1609. It should be no surprise that the Europeans found themselves amongst ancient civilizations. When the Europeans first arrived, the archipelago was under Islamic dominance. However, Islam was also a late comer – before the advent of Islam, kingdoms with a high degree of organization were thriving under Hindu or Buddhist rulers. Indian culture and customs had been introduced, including the monarchy, the ancestry system, literature, music, architecture, religious practices and rituals, and also division into castes. Great Hindu literary works such as Vedas and the Mahabharata and Ramayana epics were also introduced through the wayang or the shadow-play, a form of popular entertainment that can be seen in present day Indonesia. -

The concept of urban mosque stems from more extensive reasons that mostly come from the overall issues of industrialization. Considering the challenges related to rapid urban growth, public institutions, such as mosque and its compatibility is required to be assessed in the context of compact cities. This study, therefore, aims to evaluate the planning and layout of six different styles of mosque in Malaysia regarding their suitability in compact urban settings. Due to its genre, the study adopts a case study as a qualitative research strategy as its research method. Content analysis is conducted on the compiled literature to indicate the expected outcome. Following a brief comparative discussion, this paper shows that mosque with modern architectural style among all six typologies is most suitable in the context of compact urban settings. Factors considered for the evaluation of mosques include layout progression of the mosque whether horizontal or vertical, provision for vertical stacking of spaces, symmetry in topology as well as in elevation and space types regarding flexible usage. The Kingdom of Majapahit ruled by Hindu Kings was the largest empire ever established in Southeast Asia from the 13th century to the 16th century. It was founded in East Java in 1294, exactly 700 years at the end of Kublai Khan's invasion. In the 14th century, Majapahit became a great centre of power in the entire Malay Archipelago. Its sway spread over much Administratively the empire was loosely bound by tribute paid in products and services to the centre by small states in the region including old Singapore, then known as Temasek. In the 15th century it was gradually torn apart by civil war. The trading ports of Java's north coast, where Islam was becoming popular, came into conflict with the traditional centre of power in the rice-growing interior. Majapahit authority in the Malacca Straits was increasingly contested by an emergent Malacca. By the time the Portuguese conquered Malacca in 1511, only a shell was left of Majapahit. Through archaeology and historical writings, we know that Majapahit had a major influence on the politics and culture of old Singapore. Both the 14th Century poem, Nagarakertagama and the 17th century Pararaton (Book of Kings) mentioned Temasek as part of the Majapahit empire. -

Malacca Sultanate and Sokoto Caliphate implemented Shariah before the coming of the colonial masters. When the colonial masters came, they introduced the doctrine of validity to make Islamic law a secondary law especially in criminal matters. Islamic law was made applicable to Muslims only on matters of Muslim personal law such as marriage, divorce and custody of children. Even after independence, not much was seen of Islamic criminal law in these territories. However, a new awakening amongst Muslims has resulted in the implementation of some aspects of Islamic criminal law in Malaysia and Nigeria. Since democracy advocates that the voice of the majority must always be reckoned with, it will therefore not be out of place to have Islamic law in these territories. The mutual relationship between the center and its periphery shares substantive responsibility in a manner of being constructive. Concerning the inter-relational approach between the centre and its periphery of Islamic world, the relation of Aceh with the Ottoman State became one of the hallmarks of the development of Pan-Islamism. Thus this article reexamines the ways in which Acehnese sultans’ promoting Pan-Islamist ideology in relation with the Ottoman State on the basis of contemporary news and commentaries in the journal of Basiret which was published for about 60 news commencing before the appalling Dutch war until June 1874 in Constantinople. Key Words: Pan-Islamism, Basiret, Ottoman, Indian Ocean, Aceh 1.Introduction This paper revisits not only the relationships between the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam and the Ottoman State but also and the conceptual development of the Pan-Islamic world view in the context of the center and the periphery of Islamic world. The writer employs an approach that is an alternative view to the conventional understanding of center-periphery relations in terms of Islamic states, and the relations between the Ottoman State and the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam. -

The designs vary; some were made based on the onion-shaped dome which is an influence from the Mughal’s empire and others were made as a landmark for a certain area. The design of enormous domes, tall minarets, and huge scale space can be considered as typical mosque layout but some traditional mosques had been altered from its original layout which messed up the philosophy behind the initial structures. Although it can be understood that renovations of adding new elements and spaces to the original layout is to accommodate the current population, it is still important to preserve as well as to conserve the traditional and heritage values of these buildings as they represent the early Islamic architecture of Malaysia. This paper will take a depth on the study of mosques architecture in Terengganu, one of the states located in the East side of Malaysia which have a number of mosques range from the 1800s to 1900s. The presence of mosques with outstanding historical, heritage, and aesthetic values have attracted foreign and domestic tourists to visit, appreciate, and experience these Muslim places of worship. As Islamic tourism is gaining popularity and the importance of mosques as tourist attractions is growing, it is therefore useful to explore mosque tourism in the context of Malaysia. While a number of investigations have researched mosque tourism in the contexts of motivations, residents’ attitudes, and architecture uniqueness, limited studies have examined Muslim places of worship from the perspective of marketing. Hence, this paper focuses on how Malaysian mosques have been promoted in tourism materials. Content analysis was utilised in the assessment of textual descriptions and visual images of mosques that have been featured in tourism promotions for over seven decades. Findings of this paper uncovered that mosques have been represented in tourism brochures published from 1969 to August 2019. Two of the earliest mosques that appeared in tourism brochures are Kapitan Kling Mosque and the Malay Mosque (Masjid Kampung Melayu) in the promotion of Penang as a tourist destination.
