Summary for Littlebury Collection (VMM20) Littlebury collection [graphic materials] / Littlebury, Cyril R. COLLECTION NUMBER VMM20 DATE(S) 1920-1930 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION 782 photographs : b&w negatives ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY / BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Cyril Joseph Rowland Littlebury (1898-1936) Cyril Joseph Rowland Littlebury was born in England in 1898 and moved with his family first to New Zealand, and then eventually to settle in Calgary, Alberta. After the death of his mother in 1927, Cyril Littlebury appears to have moved to Vancouver from Calgary, possibly with his father Arthur. Cyril is listed as printer in the 1929 business directory at the same residential address as Arthur. Initially he seemed to have worked as a commercial printer, and in the 1930 directory (Wriggley) they are listed as photographers. Cyril and Arthur probably worked together as photographers in 1935-1936. Up until recently, Cyril was mostly known for his photographs of railways. During his time in Calgary (from 1912 to 1927) he worked as a clerk for a lawfirm, a fireman for the CNR, and a pressman for his father’s printing business. His photographic work is unclear. There are thousands of images of trains and railways, mostly from the 1900s to the early 1930s. Had 29 pictures in total published in the British periodical, “The Railway Magazine”, between 1919-1934. There are also many holiday pictures of Vancouver, gardens and some buildings, presumably taken during any of the many visits out west. Cyril used to go down to Brockton or Prospect Points at Stanley Park and photograph the ships coming in. He would then develop them at night, and head down to the docks the next day where he would sell them to the passengers and crew. Cyril was married in 1929, but divorced soon after. He passed away December 10, 1936 at the age of 40. Sources: Cyril R. Littlebury’s Canadian Pacific Railway – 1918 to 1933, by Donald M. Bain and Lance W. Camp. Wilson May 2019 Abstract The research for this paper was done as part of a sesquicentennial project on 150 Years of Canadian Engineering. Some of its material has also been presented orally. This paper covers briefly and selectively Canadian engineering events and achievements in four time periods: one up to the time of Confederation in 1867, and three others between then and 2017. Associated with the three later periods are corresponding economic/political/social timelines to help put the engineering in context. There are no comments in it on the quality of the design, construction/manufacture, origins and uses of the items listed. This paper took a whole lot longer than expected to research and write, so that it carries a date in 2019 rather than late in 2017, when the chronological material in it ends. There are no maps or photographs.

Attorney General of Canada Page 2 Introduction [1] The E&N Railway (the “Railway”) on Vancouver Island runs from Victoria to Courtenay, with a branch line from Parksville to Port Alberni and a spur from the main line in Nanaimo to a rail yard and barge loading facility. The Railway, now owned and operated by the defendant Island Corridor Foundation (“ICF”), transects 1.3 km of the plaintiff First Nation’s reserve lands in Nanoose. This strip of land (the “Lands”) is subject to a right of way in favour of ICF (the “ROW”). [2] At issue is whether the Lands remain alienated from the plaintiff and subject to the ROW given the Railway infrastructure has deteriorated and rail service has been discontinued except for freight traffic on the Nanaimo spur line. [3] The plaintiff seeks: a) A declaration that the lands subject to the ROW revert to the administration and control of Canada for the use and benefit of Snaw- Naw-As as a part of the Snaw-Naw-As reserve upon the cessation of railway operations; b) In the alternative, a declaration that the lands subject to the ROW revert to the administration and control of Canada in trust for Snaw-Naw-As upon the cessation of railway operations.
