    Theological News Published quarterly – ISSN 0260-3705 Volume 47, Number 2 – April 2018 Turkish Christians produce historic book A comprehensive book on the foundations of Christianity, unprecedented in its nature and in the scope of Christian collaboration that led to its development, was released in March by all the major Christian organizations in Turkey. Called Christianity: Fundamental Teachings, the book was compiled by an 11-member committee over the course of more than 10 years. The committee comprised representatives of Catholic, Armenian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Syrian Orthodox and Protestant/ Evangelical churches in Turkey. Armenian bishop Sahag Mashalian explained that the committee was established in 2002 when the Turkish Ministry of National Education asked the churches to redraft texts devoted to Christianity in Turkish educational textbooks. After completing this task, the committee decided to pursue creation of a separate textbook devoted fully to Christianity. The back cover of the book explains its contents and significance with these compelling words: ‘This book is a landmark in inter-church efforts to draw closer together. It was written by a commission delegated by leaders of all of the major churches of Turkey. This commission, which met at regular intervals, decided to publish a basic book containing the doctrines of faith held in common by all Christian churches. This joint publication will help every Christian in Turkey to understand their own faith doctrines, but it also represents a striking and seminal advance in mutual respect and affection. The faith doctrines summarized in this book can already be found in each church’s books on faith and doctrine.

    IJRF Vol 2:1 2009 (111-130) 111 Iran: Suppression of religious freedom and persecution of religious minorities Thomas Schirrmacher* Abstract The article explores the situation of non-Shiite Muslims, non-Christian religions like Baha'i, and the different Christian confessions in Iran. It particularly examines their legal situation, asks for the ideological position of the Iranian leadership concerning other religions and then describes the actual problems, as the government rarely uses legal means against other religions, but uses allegations of espionage against them. Keywords Iran, Shia, Sunni, Baha’i, Protestants, Evangelicals. 1. The Iranian revolution Shah Reza Pahlavi maintained progressive economic policies while relying heavily on the West. Unpopular because of his use of repressive measures and his secret service, he was subsequently deposed of by the Shiite Islamic revolution. In 1979 the Islamic Republic was proclaimed. Ever since the Islamic clergy, as guardians of the revolution, maintain authority over the politicians, who, while mostly democratically elected, are hand-picked by the religious guardians. Consequently, in spite of its democratic structures, Iran remains a theocratic police state which ignores human rights, in particular those of minorities, non-Muslims and women. Schirrmacher will replace Bishop Efraim Tendero of the Philippines, who has served as Secretary General for five years. Tendero described Schirrmacher as ‘the person who is best prepared to lead the global body of evangelicals into the future. As we have partnered together in the WEA Senior Leadership Team for several years, I saw in him the charisma, competence and capacity that is matched by the character, conviction and calling from God that are needed for such a global task. I have full confidence that he will lead the WEA as empowered by the Holy Spirit in advancing the good news of the Lord Jesus Christ to all nations, and effecting personal, family and community transformation for the glory of God.’ Schirrmacher has filled various roles for the WEA since 1999.     Are “white” people more intelligent than “black” people? Are Jews devious and grabby? But racism is not only wrong theologically, it is not only against the dignity of humans, that guarantees their human rights, but newer genetic research also proves that the whole classification into races is without foundation.
