  • RSC Style Guide
Religious Studies Center Style Guide, 1 October 2018 Authors who submit manuscripts for potential publication should generally follow the guidelines in The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2017) and Style Guide for Editors and Writers, 5th ed. (Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2013). This style guide summarizes the main principles in the other style guides and lists a few exceptions to their guidelines. Formatting 1. Use double-spacing throughout the manuscript and the endnotes. Use one-inch margins, and insert page numbers at the bottom of the page. Use a Times New Roman 12-point font for both the body of the manuscript and the notes. Use only one space after periods. 2. If you have images, add captions and courtesy lines (such as courtesy of Church History Library, Salt Lake City) to the Word file. However, do not insert images in the Word files; submit them separately. Images should be 300 dpi or better (TIFF or JPG files). File names and captions should match (Fig. 1.1 = chapter 1, figure 1). Headings 3. Update: Include headings to break up the text. First-Level Headings First-level headings should be flush left and bolded, as in the example above. Capitalize internal words except for articles (a, an, and the), conjunctions (and, but, or, for, so, and yet), prepositions, and the word to in infinitive phrases. Second-Level Headings Second-level headings should be flush left and italicized. Capitalize like first-level headings. Third-level headings. Third-level headings should be italicized, followed by a period, and run in to the text; capitalization should be handled sentence-style (capitalize the first word and proper nouns).

  • Elder Massimo De Feo: ‘Welcome to the Lord’S Temple in Rome’
Elder Massimo De Feo: ‘Welcome to the Lord’s Temple in Rome’ Elder Massimo De Feo and his wife, Loredana Galeandro, pose for photos at the Church Office Building in Salt Lake City Monday, April 4, 2016. April 3, 2016, will forever be a historic day for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints in Italy. For the first time, one of their own was called to be a senior Church leader. While Elder Massimo De Feo’s recent assignment as a General Authority Seventy signaled a key moment in Church history, his own introduction to the Church was far more commonplace. When missionaries knocked on the De Feo family’s door in Taranto in 1970, 9-year-old Massimo and his older brother Alberto were taught the gospel and were later baptized. While Massimo and Alberto’s parents never joined the Church, they were supportive of their sons as they became active in their new faith. “Our parents never accepted the gospel, but they felt it was good and they felt good about their two children growing up in the gospel with good principles,” Elder De Feo said. Alberto and Massimo’s beliefs were challenged outside the home. They were the only members in their school in a community with deep Catholic roots and centuries-old traditions. The brothers made it a point to avoid contention and looked for opportunities to explain The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with others. Although the Church in Taranto was small, Massimo said leaders, teachers and youth advisers always made him feel he belonged.

PIONEERS IN EVERY LAND LATTER-DAY SAINTS IN A LEGACY Italy OF FAITH By Lia McClanahan he history of the Church in Italy begins in New Testament times, when the capital of the Roman Empire was home to a group of faithful Christians. T The Bible doesn’t record who originally took the gospel to Rome, but a branch of the Church had been there for “many years” (Romans 15:23) when the Apostle Paul sent a letter to the Romans in about a.d. 57. Paul described the Christians in Rome as “full of goodness” (15:14). He was acquainted with some of them, and his epistle contained a long list of beloved Saints to whom he sent greetings (see 16:1–15). Paul extolled the faith of those Christians and told them that he prayed fervently for them. He longed to see them and hoped God would grant that he might visit them soon (see 1:8–15). When he did at last go to Rome, it was as a prisoner, but the Church members’ anticipation of his arrival was such that some of the brethren traveled 43 miles (69 km) to meet him at the Appii forum. Seeing them, “he thanked God, and took cour- age” (Acts 28:15). Later, Paul suffered martyrdom in Rome, where Christians were severely perse- cuted by Nero and other emperors. Eventually the Church fell into apostasy, but the early Roman Saints left a legacy of faith at the center of the empire, setting the stage for Christianity to spread throughout the world.

We were the products of war-weary parents who themselves had been children of the Depression era. But the end of the war signaled a period of economic growth and development that put the United States on track to be the world’s richest and most powerful nation. We grew up in a time of plenty and our parents continued to expand our families for almost two more decades. Thus we became the “baby boomers” – a term first seen in an article in the Washington Post in 1970 – and therefore we were named and classified. We had power from the get-go, in terms of sheer numbers, wealth, and educational achievement. We have been described as a swallowed pig moving through a boa constrictor, changing the shape and perspective of the host. Our generation was seen as living in a Norman Rockwell world. But that image was deceptive.

BYU-Pathway Worldwide Devotional July 16, 2019 “Trust in the Lord’s Plan” Lessons Learned from the Rome Italy Temple Gérald Caussé Presiding Bishop I rejoice in this opportunity to speak to you determined BYU-Pathway students from all around the world. You have embarked on an educational journey that may include challenges and even setbacks along the way. My desire is to provide you with hope and encouragement when you face difficult times as you pursue your educational goals. The recently dedicated Rome Italy Temple holds a special place in my heart. I participated in the construction process for this magnificent house of the Lord since the groundbreaking ceremony in September 2009. The excitement of everyone in attendance was palpable, and we all anticipated that the construction would proceed smoothly and swiftly. None of us attending that day would have ever imagined it would take almost 10 years to complete this beautiful edifice. Unfortunately, as soon as construction began, problems arose. Then, for several years, obstacles of every kind got in our way that often impeded and delayed our progress. The finish date of the construction had to be pushed back several times. During these challenging times, I occasionally found myself asking: “Where is the Lord? Why doesn’t He come to help us?” Finally, the construction of the temple was complete. Last March, I was invited to participate in the dedicatory sessions. Upon my arrival at the temple site, I looked upon the incredible beauty of the temple and was filled with overwhelming feelings of awe and gratitude.
