FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif, Jan. 7, 2000 – This year at auto shows around the United States Hyundai Motor America will be displaying the Hyundai Equus, a large, extensively equipped luxury which has never before been seen in America.

While the vehicle will not be sold in the United States, the Equus will serve to showcase the wide variety of vehicles produced by parent firm of Korea. While many American auto show goers are familiar with Hyundai’s current offerings in the United States, they may be unaware of the full range of vehicles built by Hyundai and sold in other parts of the world.

The Equus display will allow the company to broaden understanding of Hyundai’s worldwide offerings. It was first seen at the in 1999 and has been on sale in Korea for several months, where sales have exceeded initial expectations.

The Equus on display has an overall length of 199 inches, about the size of a Cadillac Eldorado and a of 111 inches. The vehicle is front wheel drive.

The Equus is available in Korea with two engines, a 3.5liter DOHC V6 or a 4.5liter DOHC V8 which utilizes Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology. The V6 develops 220 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 215 foot pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm. The eight cylinder engine develops 260 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 261 found pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm. Only the V8 Equus will be displayed in the United States.

The only transmission available is a fully automatic 5speed transmission. Some versions offer a manual gear selection override, allowing the driver to manually shift up or down the transmission range. The transmission is fully adaptive, adjusting to the driving style of the driver.

The front suspension is independent strut while the rear suspension is a multilink design. All cars are equipped with electronic traction control. The vehicle rides on 16inch alloy wheels, with 225/60 tires.

As befits a luxury vehicle, it is available with a wide variety of standard and optional features including solarcontrol perimeter glass, “Super Vision” instrument lighting with self illuminating dials, rear seat power outlet and trunk tool kit.

Equipment available on the Equus also includes an indash TV or navigation screen (the TV function will not operate unless the vehicle transmission is stopped), rear compartment consolemount TV, rear shelf drink cooler which functions like a small refrigerator and DVD input jacks playing into an 11speaker JBL audio system.

Driver and passenger comfort is, of course, paramount and all seats are leather. There are power front and rear seats with backrest tilt and cushion tilt/slide. All seats are heated and there is an electric tilt and telescoping steering wheel. On some versions of the vehicle the rear seats have available foldup calf support and the passenger front seat back folds down to provide foot rest for the rear seat passenger.

Safety is also a major focus of the Equus. There are front air bags and front and rear side providing a total of six airbags within the cabin. Xenon headlights provide superb night visibility. In the rear bumper sensors are mounted so that if an object is too close when the vehicle backs up the sensors sound a warning in the cabin to alert the driver.

In Korea the Equus is available in two models. The short wheelbase vehicle, described above and on display in the U.S. and a long wheelbase vehicle of limousine proportions. That model has a wheelbase of 121 inches and an overall length of 210 inches.

Hyundai Motor America, based in Fountain Valley, Calif., is a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company of Korea. Hyundai cars are distributed in the United States by Hyundai Motor America and are sold and serviced through nearly 500 dealerships nationwide.
