As demonstrated by the flurry of articles in specialized columns and websites like “Playbill” (“Original Rent Cast”) and “Entertainment Weekly” (Derschowitz), blogs such as “Broadway Musical Blog” (Rigsbee), and tweets (“#BroadwayCon”), the convention had a meaningful significance for fans of the musical Rent, which celebrated 20 years from its opening off-Broadway during that weekend. More somberly, the festivities were also a chance to remember its creator, Jonathan Larson, who died the night before the first off-Broadway preview. THE HOLLYWOOD MUSICAL: Evolution & Aesthetics This essay is an extravaganza of the Hollywood musical’s camera movement and editing, during the revolutionary period of 1977-1999. The films in this essay’s discussion include; Saturday Night Fever, Grease, The Wiz, An American in Paris, All That Jazz, Roller Boogie, Fame, Xanadu, Flashdance, Michael Jackson’s History, White Nights, Dirty Dancing, River Dance, a Tap Dance concert offered at the White House with Savion Glover & company, scenes from Janet Jackson’s 1999 tour, and a classic routine on skate’s of Gene Kelly’s “Singing in the Rain” as performed by Kirk Browning. However no changes were as contrasting and profound within a limited amount of time as the revolutionary period between 1977 and the present. Therefore it is strongly recommended that readers view the films mentioned because a lengthy discussion will take place on the aesthetics of specific scenes in the film. The thesis draws on theories in cinematic landscape and children’s geographies to explore how ethnic minority childhood experience is constructed cinematically. What in particular is made of rurality versus urban living, how are such geographies imagined, and how do these vistas and landscapes facilitate the understanding of the children’s identities and reflect certain ideological agendas of filmmakers in the context of a Han-dominated multi-ethnic nation during its rapid social-political transformations in the 1990s and 2000s? In individual chapters, various theoretical approaches are also deployed, such as the idea of natural space in a musical, a rural idyllic childhood, focalisation in film narrative, relational construction of space, transitional space of play and media’s impact on identity construction. The thesis concludes that, in different historical periods, the ethnic minority children’s connections with rural space carry different connotations. -

Music For The Movies by Ian Lace Introduction This article, that charts the history of film music, from the early European scores through to those for so many Hollywood epics, was first published in 1998 on the now defunct (but still available) site Film Music on the Web: part of MusicWeb International. It is now being republished on the main MusicWeb International site in order to bring it to the attention of a wider and possibly younger readership. Newly composed classical music in the 1920s and 1930s tended towards atonalism. The avant-garde dissonances of Schoenberg and Webern, were considered to be de rigueur; tonal, melodic music was out - thought to be passé, not worth a candle. For the ordinary man in the street or the old-fashioned music-lover brought up and steeped in the late-Romantic music tradition of Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Richard Strauss, this was anathema. When the age of the talkies dawned for the cinema in the late 1920s and 1930s, and the advent of the original film score (music especially composed for a specific film - typically Max Steiner’s music for the 1933 film King Kong) directly dramatic and emotion-laden music, that of the late-Romantic music tradition was rightly deemed more suitable rather than the incomprehensible (to the vast majority) cerebral music of the worshippers of atonalism. This type of film music held sway until the advent of pop, jazz and some dissonance-inflected scores heard during the 1950s and 1960s. Full blown late-Romantic music returned with the mass appeal of John Williams’s scores for such epics as Jaws and Star Wars. -

9'11"01 (September 11) Dir: Various, UK/France/Bosnia-Herzegovina/Egypt/Israel/Japan, 2002 A review by Elizabeth Rosen, University College London, UK Part of the shock of the events of September 11, 2001 was in the witnessing of them. Never before had an act of mass murder been instantaneously relayed across the world through the modern media. The immediacy which marks our contemporary media meant that the entire world could, and did, watch the destruction of the World Trade Centre in real time. And it is in large part due to the mass media -- which had been beaming images of the iconic towers around the world for years -- that so many people outside the U.S. felt a kinship horror when the towers came down. It's easy for Americans, who have sometimes been insular as a nation, to believe that the pain which accompanied these insidious attacks is unique in quality and quantity. But there is an antidote for that solipsism, and French television producer Alain Brigand has provided it with his omnibus film 9'11"01. Brigand gave money to eleven film directors from eleven different countries and asked them each to make a film about September 11th. Each film was to last eleven minutes, nine seconds, plus one frame. All the directors had to agree not to incite bigotry, but were given total freedom of expression otherwise. The results, for the most part, are quite successful. The stories here range from the personal to the political, the devastating to the comedic. Brigand makes a shrewd choice in opening with Iranian director Samira Makhmalbaf's contribution.
