(23/12/2015) Tezi Hazırlayan Öğrenci ġeyma Kılınç v ÖNSÖZ Katolik Kilisesi‘ni günümüz dünyasına taĢıma ve modern dünyada icra edeceği misyonun metotlarını belirleme amacıyla 20. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında toplanan II. Vatikan Konsili ile birlikte Katolik Kilisesi yeni bir döneme girmiĢtir. Katolik Kilisesi‘nin kendini gözden geçirmek ve dünyaya açılmak arzusunda olduğunu ilan ettiği bu konsil yeni sürecin gerektirdiği teolojik yaklaĢımların da kaynağı niteliğindedir. Kilise‘nin günümüz dünyasında ne ifade ettiğini ve günümüz insanına neler söylediğini ifade eden konsil kararları, öncelikle kendi bağlıları daha sonra da diğer insanlar tarafından iyi anlaĢılmak durumundaydı. Bu itibarla pek çok konu içerisinde Kilise‘nin yeni misyon anlayıĢı; bu bağlamda Hıristiyanların kendi aralarındaki iliĢkileri ifade eden Ökümenizm kavramı ile Kilise‘nin diğer dinlerin mensuplarıyla iliĢkilerini ifade eden Dinlerarası Diyalog kavramı söz konusu konsille öne çıkmıĢtır. Konsil sonrasında yayınlanan papalık genelgeleri kararların öncelikle Hıristiyanlar tarafından iyi anlaĢılması ve tatbik edilmesi konusunda önemli bir fonksiyon icra etmektedir. Dolayısıyla bu belgelerin doktrinel olarak konsil kararlarıyla çeliĢmeyen içerikte ve dil itibariyle de uygun nitelikte olması beklenmektedir. Konsil sonrasında yayınlanan papalık genelgeleri incelendiğinde, günümüzün ihtiyaçlarına cevap vermek isteyen, buna mukabil Kilise‘nin geleneksel çizgisine aykırı olmayan ve aĢırı bulduğu bazı yaklaĢımları sert bir Ģekilde eleĢtiren ya da cezalandıran bir çizgi ortaya koyduğu görülmektedir. Papalık genelgelerinin icra ettiği bu fonksiyon Katolik Kilisesi‘ni anlamak bakımından önem taĢımaktadır. Bizim araĢtırmamıza konu ettiğimiz Dominus Iesus Genelgesi (2000) bu anlamda önemli bir genelgedir. Yayınlandığı tarihte oldukça sert uslubuyla dikkat vi çeken bu genelgenin ortaya çıkıĢ Ģartları, mimarı, içeriği, mesajı ve genelge kakkındaki değerlendirmeler asıl odak noktamızı oluĢturmaktadır. Bu itibarla Dinsel Öğretiler Kurulu‘nun uzun yıllar baĢkanlığını yapan ve bu süreçte farklı görüĢlerinden dolayı birçok Katolik Ġlahiyatçıyı ve din adamını cezalandıran Kardinal Joseph Ratzinger/Papa XVI. Benedict‘in kiĢiliği, eğitimi, genelgenin mimarı olarak teolojik birikimi ve çizgisi ile Kilise‘deki yerini ortaya koymak önem arzetmektedir. Yine baĢta Hıristiyan dünyası olmak üzere bütün dünyada yankı uyandıran Dominus Iesus genelgesinin içerik, dil ve mesaj bakımından diğer genelgeler arasındaki yerinin ele alınması ve Katolik Kilisesi‘nin diğer Hıristiyanlar ve diğer dinlerin mensupları ile olan iliĢkilerinde yeni bir yön kazanıp kazanmadığının araĢtırılması da ayrı bir öneme sahiptir. Bu çerçevede söz konusu genelgenin konsil sonrası yayınlanan ve içerik benzerliği olan bazı genelgelerle mukayesesinin yapılması ve Dominus Iesus hakkındaki değerlendirmeler araĢtırmamızın temel konuları arasında yer almaktadır. Katolik Kilisesi‘nin II. Vatikan Konsili sonrası dünyaya açılma, Katolik olmayan diğer Hıristiyanlar ve diğer dinlerin mensuplarıyla misyon gereği diyaloğa girme isteği doğrultusunda yapılan çalıĢmalara Joseph Ratzinger‘in ve Dominus Iesus genelgesinin etkisinin konu edildiği bu çalıĢma konusunda gerek konu seçimi, gerekse konunun Ģekillenmesi noktasında rehberlik yapan danıĢman hocam Sayın Prof. Dr. Ali Ġsra Güngör‘e teĢekkürlerimi sunmayı borç bilirim. BARBATO, JUN 2 2019 The Abu Dhabi declaration’s title “Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together”, signed by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, sparked public and political interest beyond the Catholic and Muslim faithful. When the leader of the Roman Catholic Church and the head of the most prestigious university for Muslim scholarship in Cairo come together on the soil of the Arabian Peninsula to declare peace, it is worth a second look and a political analysis. While for some the pope and the Grand Imam might represent self-reflexive religious voices worth listing to in a “post-secular political order” (Barbato and Kratochwil 2009) and others might see them as rather dark relicts of a pre-modern state of human development, everyone knows that Catholics and Muslims constitute a big and still growing part of the world population (currently three billion people). Dominating some regions, spreading almost everywhere, and clashing on some fault-lines, they have an impact on global politics, publics, and economy.

Despite – or even because of – its provocative contents the Pope’s Regensburg lecture appears to be bearing fruit. A year ago 38 Muslim scho- lars wrote to Pope Benedict but now a more enduring, more widely based dialogue appears to be developing. The new letter is addressed not only to Pope Benedict XVI but also to the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, the Archbishop of Canter- bury and the leaders of the Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist and Reformed Churches. The title – ‘A Common Word between Us and You’ – is drawn from a famous verse of sura 3:64, addressed to Jews and Christians (referred to here as ‘People of the Scripture’). The letter compares selected Qur’anic and Biblical texts and comes to the conclusi- on that both scriptures emphasize ‘the primacy of total love and devotion to God’ together with love of neighbour. Muslims and Christians, it goes on, make up more than half of the world’s population. The relationship between them is therefore “the most important factor in contributing to meaningful peace around the world.” “As Muslims, we say to Christians that we are not against them and that Islam is not against them – so long as they do not wage war against Muslims on account of their religion, oppress them and drive them out of their homes”(cf.

    EDMUND CHIA REGENSBURG AND DIALOGUE The Regensburg Lecture The Regensburg Lecture of Pope Benedict XVI is by now well known as the most recent interreligious fiasco involving the Vatican and the world of Islam. This lecture was delivered by the pope at his former school, the University of Regens- burg, Germany (Benedict XVI 2006a). We have probably all followed the inci- dent closely enough, especially the vociferous reaction that certain statements of the lecture provoked all over the Muslim world. Numerous Muslim communities and organizations protested the pope’s speech (some violently but the majority in a civil fashion). The matter was even brought up for discussion in the Parliament of my own Mus- lim-majority country, Malaysia, and the prime minister, who chairs the Organ- ization of Islamic Countries, had demanded that the pope apologize for the hurt caused to the Muslim community. Of course the Western media was more inter- ested in portraying the less civil responses from other forums, especially those which turned bloody and involved the burning of the pope’s effigy, the destruction of churches, and other violent acts. In Defense of the Pope Aside from the protests and criticisms from the Islamic community, reactions to the pope’s lecture and especially its aftermath also came from within the Catholic community. Many spoke in defense of the pope, among whom were bishops and cardinals, especially those working in the Vatican. The newly appointed Vatican Secretary of State, Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, for example, emphasized that the pope’s lecture was directed to an academic audience and his use of the offensive text by the Byzantine emperor Manuel II Paleologus was incidental, merely a way of introducing the discussion.

Blessings upon the Prophets of God n the welcoming setting of Oman’s distinguished theological faculty, and the sublime beauty of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Professor David Ford of the ICambridge Faculty of Divinity offered Muslim scholars a gift. He named the gift ‘A Muscat Manifesto’, and distilled in it the wisdom of decades of deep theological work and experience. 1 The gift consisted of good advice on the features of good theology, the characteristics of good religious leadership, and guidelines for inter-faith relations. Professor Ford, of course, spoke from the depths of his own Christian wisdom tradition, but his advice, coming from a sincere and loving heart, did transcend inter-faith boundaries, and touched the hearts of many Muslim scholars. 2 What comes from the heart enters hearts. I pray that I can respond to ‘A Muscat Manifesto’ from the heart. Of course, the best heart-felt response to a gift is gratitude. So, it is my honour to publicly thank Professor Ford for his wonderful gift, and to elaborate the ‘thank you’ theologically, as best as I can. ‘A Muscat Manifesto’ provides the features or ‘key elements’ for ‘wise theology’.

    REGENSBURG Carissimi, Five years ago September 12th Pope Benedict delivered a scholarly lecture on the role of reason vis-à-vis religion in the modern world at the University of Regensburg in Germany, where he once taught theology. The Pope had some very pointed comments to make concerning the various stages of assault upon human reason. His lecture was mostly directed to the West – the modern, liberal, secular, culturally eviscer- ated West. He said the “decline of Reason” in the Occident came about in three chief stages. First was the Protestant Revolt, which hoisted the fanatical flag of fideism, proclaiming “Faith Alone!” It continued with what is called “liberal theology,” which mushes Divine Revelation around until it is completely unrecognizable, like a kid who is trying to make it appear that he’s eaten all his potatoes (I might add that they tended to be German potatoes). And finally, the third stage in the assault on Reason proceeded from Scientific Positivism, which says that only sense experience yields certitude (even though no one can sense Positivism itself). Christianity, he taught, was formed by unique triple blending of Jewish Religion, Greek Reason and Roman Order. Jerusalem, Athens and Rome. Faith and Reason are rightfully complementary and mutu- ally enriching. Faith without reason is fideism. Reason without faith is rationalism. Both do violence to the human intellect. Only Catholicism is the harmony of Faith and Reason ultimately found, and therein the human intellect can soar to the heights of truth with both wings. The Pope had something to say about Islam, too.
