  • The East Coast Tidal Surge of 5 December 2013 Lincolnshire
OFFICIAL Lincolnshire’s Tidal Surge Response & Recovery ‘After Action’ Report The East Coast Tidal Surge of 5th December 2013 Lincolnshire Resilience Forum’s Response & Recovery ‘After Action’ Report 20th March 2014 1 OFFICIAL Lincolnshire’s Tidal Surge Response & Recovery ‘After Action’ Report Foreword On Thursday 5th December 2013 a deepening pressure system combined with high astronomical tides and strong to gale force ‘north westerly’ winds to generate a coastal surge along the whole of the east coast of England, the largest surge since the ‘great storm’ of 1953. Due to advances in surge forecasting, flood prediction and contingency planning at national, sub-national and local levels we were able to ‘get ahead’ of the storm. From Tuesday 3rd December partners began deploying one of the largest multi-agency emergency response and recovery operations ever conducted in Lincolnshire. This included the most significant evacuation operation in recent memory, the rescue of a number of people who became isolated by floodwaters, and work to ensure critical services were maintained and damaged infrastructure quickly repaired. Thankfully there were only 3 (relatively minor) casualties as a result of the surge, but more than 720 residential and commercial properties were inundated from the resultant overtopping and breach of defences. I would like to pass on my sympathy and support to those whose households and businesses flooded. We continue to work to support a full community recovery, and I commend the work of colleagues at Boston Borough Council who have led this work. In the circumstances this was a very good, forecast-led response and recovery effort.

  • A Study of the Tales As Printed in Folk-Lore in 1891
2060302 INVESTIGATING THE LEGENDS OF THE CARRS: A STUDY OF THE TALES AS PRINTED IN FOLK-LORE IN 1891 Maureen James A submission presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Glamorgan/Prifysgol Morgannwg For the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Volume 1 April 2013 Abstract This study investigates the content, collection and dissemination of the Legends of the Cars, a group of tales published in Folk-Lore in 1891, as having been collected in North Lincolnshire from local people. The stories, have been criticised for their relatively unique content and the collector, Marie Clothilde Balfour has been accused of creating the tales. The stories are today used by artists, writers and storytellers, wishing to evoke the flatland and beliefs of the past, yet despite the questions raised regarding authenticity, neither the collector, the context or the contents have been thoroughly investigated. The tales have also, due to their inclusion in diverse collections, moved geographically south in the popular perception. This thesis documents the research into the historical, geographical and social context of the Legends of the Cars, and also validates the folkloric content and the dialect as being from North Lincolnshire. The situation within the early Folklore Society prior to, and after the publication of the stories, has also been investigated, to reveal a widespread desire to collect stories from the rural populations, particularly if they demonstrated a latent survival of paganism. Balfour followed the advice of the folklorists and, as well as submitting the tales in dialect, also acknowledged their pagan content within her introductions.

ERCAS Accredited Sports Clubs in the East Riding (as of 1st April 2015) This list has been collated to help put you in touch with our many local accredited clubs. Clubs are listed in sport order, and each one states the level of accreditation that they have gained. An accredited club is one who has worked towards a series of standards to prove that they can provide a safe, child friendly environment for junior members. There are a number of accreditation schemes for clubs to work towards, such as National Governing Body (NGB) Accreditation, Sport England's ‘Clubmark’ Scheme, and the Council's own Club Accreditation Scheme (ERCAS) all of which are a quality standard for clubs. The level of accreditation is shown against each club. Please note that only accredited clubs that are registered with the Sport, Play & Arts Service are shown on this list and should be used by schools and leisure centres when (making private bookings, providing coaching sessions to young people and handing out publicity material) If schools or leisure centres would like a group not on the list to begin working towards accreditation please contact Paul Hamlett (East Riding Volunteer Action Services – ERVAS) on 01482 871077 or email [email protected] For all other queries relating to this process please contact Adam Toes (Community Recreation Officer) on 01482 392524 or email [email protected] Clubs failing to renew their ERCAS accreditation in the last quarter are as follows: South Hunsley Badminton Club Goldstar Gymnastics The Track Fitness & Boxing Club

River response to recent environmental change in the Yorkshire Ouse basin, northern England. Sean Anthony Longfield, B.Sc. (H ons) 'N/ Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Leeds School of Geography July 1998 The candidate confirms that the work submitted is his own and that appropriate credit has been given where reference has been made to the w'ork of others II A b s t r a c t Longfield, S.A. 1998. River response to recent environmental change in the Yorkshire Ouse basin, northern England. University of Leeds, Ph.D. This study examines historical variations in flood frequency and magnitude in the Yorkshire Ouse basin, northern England, over the last 900 years. The causes of temporal and spatial variations in flooding are evaluated through investigation of climatic and land-use controls. Documentary evidence of flooding and climate suggests that a series of large floods between 1263 and 1360 were associated with climatic deterioration from the Medieval Optimum. A shift to generally milder conditions between 1361 and 1549 resulted in no floods being documented in the Ouse basin The frequency of large magnitude floods increased dramatically between 1550 and 1680, as a result of low temperatures, increased surface wetness, more frequent snowfall and a southward shift of prevailing storm tracks over middle latitudes, associated with the onset of the "Little Ice Age’. In contrast, during a wanner phase of the Little Ice Age, between 1681 and 1763, the frequency of localised summer flooding increased in the Ouse basin due to more frequent high intensity, short duration convective storms.

Dear Resident, I moved to Lincolnshire in 1968, living in Lincoln and the West Lindsey villages of Welton, Scothern and Saxilby before moving to Scotter twenty years ago. I worked in Lincoln for seventeen years at the Electronics company AEI, later known as Marconi. This is where I met my husband, Roy. I moved into Accountancy and later, Sales. In 1994 we purchased Ivy Lodge on Messingham Road, entering the hospitality industry. In 2008 I graduated with a Foundation Business Degree from Lincoln University, as a mature student, having studied at North Lindsey College. I thoroughly enjoy living in Scotter, having developed our business here providing Bed & Breakfast to some wonderful people, many of whom have since settled locally. My time within the hospitality industry led me to being made a Non-executive Director of Lincolnshire Tourism around 2010. Tourism is an important component of the local economy of West Lindsey. I am pleased that during my time in this post I helped secure a dedicated council employee with responsibility for promoting tourism. By listening, working hard and bringing a fresh approach to the role of District Councillor I know I can make a real difference. I have ambitions for our whole area that I am confident local people share. I am the only candidate who lives in the ward and as your District Councillor I will:- ■ Keep Council Tax Frozen this year & next and work hard to make sure that the council is lean and efficient, ensuring that services are provided in a business- like manner and represent value for money for local tax payers ■ Draw attention to the problem of fast traffic through the villages and the issues around parking ■ Find solutions to anti-social behaviour that brings unwarranted litter, broken glass and noise.
