    Game of Our Own Case Study: Accrington Academy July 2019 7 Background Accrington Academy is a mixed 11-18 Academy with approximately 1,380 students, located in Accrington, Lancashire. The school prides itself on having a vibrant, happy and successful environment, delivering the highest standard of education and nurturing individual’s talent and skills. Accrington Academy has extremely well-designed outside facilities within the spacious grounds, having football/rugby/hockey pitches as well as an all-weather 3G pitch and 4 netball courts. Accrington Academy are a newly recruited school within the Game of Our Own programme, and have been involved since the start of the 2018/19 academic year. Youth Sport Trust conducted a case study visit at Accrington Academy on Wednesday 3rd July 2019, hosted by their PE teacher, Sarah Lawson. The case study visit aimed to establish the value of Game of Our Own since Accrington had begun the programme, and highlight any short term and longer-term outcomes since its inception. Evaluation activities included observation of girls’ after-school football session, a focus group with Football Activators and attendees at the football session, and an interview with Miss Lawson as the lead PE teacher for girls’ football. Current Activities Ten “Acc-tivators” have been recruited to take part in the Game of Our Own programme across Year 7-9, all of whom attend the weekly football session led by Accrington Stanley Ladies coach, Elle Kayley. Since their programme training at the start of the year, the Activators have worked hard to think of creative ways to invite more girls to attend the sessions, including: • “Bring your friend to football” • Easter celebrations • Ticket invitations • “Acc-tivators” Instagram account which logs and promotes their weekly football activities.

Paula is still very busy training up our Mental Health Champions and they are doing some great work in their respective schools. We sadly said goodbye to Jade, our Youth Homeless Worker, who has gone on to work for Young Addac- Inaugural Ball tion. We would like to say a big thank you to her for the fantastic work she did for us and wish her every suc- cess in the future. That means that we’ve got a new member of the team, Catherine.     Burnley College Access and participation plan 2020-21 to 2024-25 Burnley College is a long-established Further Education College in the heart of East Lancashire. It is committed to strategies for widening access to Higher Education as well as ensuring student success which in turn improves the progression opportunities for all of our students. The College’s stated purpose is to ‘build futures and change lives’ (Burnley College Strategic Plan 2017-20) and this is supported by seven strategic objectives, including to ‘significantly expand the range of local opportunities for University-level study whilst maintaining high standards’ and ‘to maintain outstanding equality of opportunity’. The College provides access to level four education and above in an area of significant deprivation with historically low levels of participation in Higher Education. Burnley College serves a community that experiences significant levels of deprivation with Burnley itself being amongst one of the most deprived areas in the country. The most recent Government index of Deprivation (September 2015) places Burnley as the ninth most deprived area out of 354 local authorities in England and the comparative position has deteriorated since the previous index in 2010. The domains of deprivation cover income, employment, education, crime, health, barriers to housing services and living environment with the 2015 Index of Deprivation evidencing that Burnley has “proportionality more neighbourhoods ranked as highly deprived on six or all seven domains”. Pennine Lancashire is an area of low educational attainment and overall standards of achievement in Burnley remain below the Lancashire and national averages, and the gap with Lancashire increased in 2018, in every measure and for nearly every age group.

    17 July 2020 Dear Parents/Carers, Parents’ letter: Summer 2020 Firstly, I hope that this letter finds you and your families safe and well. I am delighted to report that up to present we have had no cases of COVID-19 reported for either staff or pupils. Long may this continue! As we come to the end of the summer term 2020 I am writing to give you vital information in relation to a number of school matters. The first part of my letter will deal with current school matters and the second half will deal with how our pupils will be returning to school in September. During the summer term we have regularly had between 15 and 30 pupils attending our provision for key worker children and those we deem vulnerable. This provision will finish on Friday 17th July, the end of term, and we will not be continuing this through the summer break as I wish my staff to have a good break to enable them to prepare, and be refreshed for the challenge that will come in September. We will continue to assist some families who need support in a variety of other ways through our pastoral team. Although we have not been in school our year 10 pupils were able to apply for prefect, buddy prefect and senior prefect positions through submission of a letter. After shortlisting took place identified candidates were invited into school for a socially distanced interview with Head of School, Mrs Haydock, Deputy Head, Mrs Dougan and Head of Year, Mrs Johnstone.
