The fauna of Carabidae in Azarbaijan, Iran, is very diverse and has not been studied thoroughly. In the following paper, this group of beneficial predators is studied, using samples taken through 2007–2010 across Azarbaijan. Species belonging to 12 subfamilies were collected from 24 different localities. Among this diverse fauna, 3 species, Broscus cephalotes (Linnaeus, 1758), Harpalus (Pseudoophonus) calceatus (Duftschmid, 1812), and Amara (Xenocelia) ingenua Duftschmid, 1812 are new records for Iranian fauna. Matalin Moscow State Pedagogical University, Moscow, 129278 Russia e-mail: [email protected] Received April 12, 2006 Abstract—An original classification of the life cycles of ground beetles from Western Palaearctic is proposed. The classification is based on a combination of five criteria: duration, number of generations per season, phenology of reproduction, stability, and repeatability of reproduction. According to the individual lifespan, the cycles are subdi- vided into annual and biennial ones. The annual life cycles may be uni- and bivoltine, whereas biennial ones are always univoltine. By the time of reproduction, winter-spring, spring, spring-summer, early summer, summer, late summer, summer-autumnal, autumnal, autumn-winter, winter, and aseasonal species are distinguished. The biennial and bivoltine cycles may be of both facultative and obligate nature. Species living only one season and having a continuous reproductive period are designated as semelparous, while those breeding during two or more years or having several distinct periods of reproduction in one season, as iteroparous. By now, 30 variants of life cycles in Carabidae from western Palaearctic have been established. Repeated similarly directed modifications of the life cy- cle may produce essentially different seasonal rhythms in some individuals. In this case, two subpopulation groups usually appear within the population. Under the most unfavorable conditions, these groups become practically iso- lated and hibernate at different ontogenetic stages. -

Literature 322 Summary The effect of straw burning on the non-specific predators of the soil surface: Carabidae (ground beetles), Staphylinidae (rove beetles), Araneae (spiders), Opiliones (harvestmen) and Chilopoda (centipedes) was investigated in a barley-field during the period July 1974-July 1976. The burning took place in August 1974 and 1975. In one half of the field the straw was removed, in the other half the straw was burned. The fauna of the two parts of the field was compared statistically on the basis of continuous sampling in pitfall-traps. The effect of the burning on the following generation of those species oiCarabidae breeding about the time of burning was investigated in two minor areas, which by means of barriers were separated from the surrounding field. -

The consumption and preferences of polyphagous ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) for the seeds of herbaceous plants was determined. The seeds were stuck into plasticine in small tin trays and exposed to beetle predation on surface of the ground. In the laboratory the effect of carabid (species, satiation) and seed (species, size) on the intensity of seed predation was investigated. The consumption of the generally preferredCirsium arvense seed by 23 species of common carabids increased with body size. Seed ofCapsella bursa-pastoris was preferred by small carabids and their consumption rates were not related to their size. The average daily consumption of all the carabid species tested (0.33 mg seeds . mg body mass-1 . day-1) was essentially the same for both kinds of seed. Because of satiation the consumption of seed C.of arvense providedad libitum to Pseudoophonus rufipes decreased over a period of 9 days to 1/3—1/4 of the initial consumption rate. PreferencesP. of rufipes (body mass 29.6 mg) andHarpalus afifiinis (13.4 mg) for the seeds of 64 species of herbaceous plants were determined. -

Received: 29 November 2020; Accepted: 11 December 2020; Published: 14 December 2020 Abstract: Changes in the structure of ground beetle communities indicate environmental stability or instability influenced by, e.g., urbanization, agriculture, and forestry. It can affect flight capability and ellipsoid biovolume (EV) of ground beetles. Therefore, we analyzed ground beetles in various habitats. In the course of the period from 2015 to 2017, we recorded in pitfall traps 2379 individuals (1030 males and 1349 females) belonging to 52 species at six localities (two rural, two suburban, two urban). We observed the decrease in the average EV value and morphometric characters (length, height, and width of the body) of ground beetles in the direction of the rural–suburban–urban gradient. Our results also suggest a decrease in EV of apterous and brachypterous species and an increase in macropterous species in the urban and suburban landscapes near agricultural fields. -

Three species (Dyschirius abditus (Fedorenko, 1993), Demetrias imperialis (Germar, 1823) and Microlestes fulvibasis (Reitter, 1901)) were reported for the first time for Albania, three others Cylindera( germanica muel- leri (Magistretti, 1966), Cylindera arenaria viennensis (Schrank, 1781) and Thalas- sophilus longicornis (Sturm, 1825)) were documented for the first time with detailed and trusted data for this country. Several other taxa were found for the second time or were rediscovered after many years. From other parts of the Vjosa valley, two further new or unequivocally documented species for Albania, Cylindera germanica germanica (Linnaeus, 1758) and Parazuphium chevrolatii (Laporte, 1833) were reported. Within the study area near Kutë, the highest numbers of carabid species and specimens were caught on silty and moist sediment bars with initial to pioneer vegetation situated either directly along the main channel of the Vjosa or in drying, regularly flooded side arms. -
