Nebraska Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest Nebraska Press Association Nebraska Press Advertising Service MEMO FROM THE DESK OF: Carolyn Bowman 845 “S” Street, Lincoln, NE 68508 Phone 402-476-2851, NE: 800-369-2850, Fax: 402-476-2942 RELEASE: After 9:00 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2018 LINCOLN — Sweepstakes winners in the Nebraska Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest are the weekly Orchard Antelope County News and the daily Norfolk Daily News. By placing first among all the Nebraska weeklies entered, the Orchard Antelope County News will display the Loral Johnson Community Weekly Sweepstakes Award for one year. This year marks the 15th annual presentation of the Loral Johnson Com- munity Newspaper Sweepstakes Award. Loral had a passion for community journalism throughout his life, and this award is given in memory of his enthusiasm. The Orchard Antelope County News finished with 18 first-place awards, 8 judged second best awards and 7 judged third best awards for a point total of 296. This is their first year to win this award, and they beat out the second place winner by 154 points. The Norfolk Daily News was the winner in the daily category, which excludes dailies in Omaha and Lincoln. It finished with 7 first-place awards, 14 for second and 10 for third for a point total of 250. This is the second time the Norfolk Daily News has won the daily sweepstakes. They beat out the second place winner by 12 points. The dailies are judged in 47 categories, and the weeklies in 47 categories. Both focused on writing, photography, advertising, digital, design and creativity. Other weeklies in the top three were, second, Gering Courier, and the Arlington Citizen, third. Finishing second in the daily category was the Scottsbluff Star-Herald with the Kearney Hub, third. More than 3,800 separate entries, representing 9 dailies and 62 weeklies, were judged by members of the Texas Press Association. Hot off the Press The 2015 Unclaimed Property Report is hot off the press and ready to be distributed in Nebraska's 16 daily newspapers, beginning March 8. The 44-page publication lists almost 160,000 new properties that were added to the Treasurer's database in 2014. This year's report features the stories of three families and one business that found unclaimed property last year. Featured are Jim Allen, president of Western Potatoes of Alliance; Darrel and Nancy Weers of Lincoln; Dave and Sue Erickson of Omaha; and Rosie Linnenbrink of West Point. Nos. C–122–862 and A-122-861 Dear Secretary Ross: On behalf of the thousands of employees working at the more than 1,100 newspapers that we publish in cities and towns across the United States, we urge you to heavily scrutinize the antidumping and countervailing duty petitions filed by North Pacific Paper Company (NORPAC) regarding uncoated groundwood paper from Canada, the paper used in newspaper production. We believe that these cases do not warrant the imposition of duties, which would have a very severe impact on our industry and many communities across the United States. NORPAC’s petitions are based on incorrect assessments of a changing market, and appear to be driven by the short-term investment strategies of the company’s hedge fund owners. The stated objectives of the petitions are flatly inconsistent with the views of the broader paper industry in the United States. The print newspaper industry has experienced an unprecedented decline for more than a decade as readers switch to digital media. Print subscriptions have declined more than 30 percent in the last ten years. Although newspapers have successfully increased digital readership, online advertising has proven to be much less lucrative than print advertising. As a result, newspapers have struggled to replace print revenue with online revenue, and print advertising continues to be the primary revenue source for local journalism. If Canadian imports of uncoated groundwood paper are subject to duties, prices in the whole newsprint market will be shocked and our supply chains will suffer.
