  • Studying the Stoics: It's About Progress, Not Perfection
Studying the Stoics: It’s About Progress, Not Perfection By Joe Byerly Recently, I finished The Lives of the Stoics: The Art of Living from Zeno to Marcus Aurelius by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman. This book is a profile of twenty-six Stoics, from the founder of the philosophy to Emperor Marcus Aurelius. For those interested in learning about Stoicism, it’s a great starting point. Holiday and Hanselman are excellent writers and they weave the Stoic teachings into their biographical sketches. I was excited when I had the chance to catch up with Stephen and talk about Stoicism and the book. Keep reading to learn why Stoicism appeals to leaders in the military, why the Stoics weren’t perfect people, and how we can learn more about this practical philosophy. Joe: It seems that Stoicism is starting to gain greater traction among military readers. Why is that? Studying the Stoics: It’s About Progress, Not Perfection | 1 Studying the Stoics: It’s About Progress, Not Perfection Stephen: There is a natural tie between the military and Stoicism. In today’s hedonistic culture, there’s a lot of value placed on material things and chasing after whatever feels good to us. In contrast, the whole Stoic system is focused on the pursuit of virtue and the development of character. There are four Stoic virtues: wisdom, justice, courage, and self- control. I think the virtue of sophrosyne or self-control resonates with members of the military because that is what is required to have the discipline to prepare one’s mind and body for service in war.

Hacking Life • Hacking Life Chapter 8: Hacking Meaning Joseph Reagle Published on: Apr 03, 2019 Updated on: Apr 09, 2019 Hacking Life • Hacking Life Chapter 8: Hacking Meaning Dale Davidson was adrift. He had graduated college and been accepted into Navy SEAL training, just as he had been working toward. Yet several months in, he dropped out for reasons he’s still unsure of. It would have made sense if he had another option in mind, but he didn’t: “I was thrust back into ‘civilian life’ and felt aimless.” It was as if he had set his sights on a big wave, paddled out to catch it, but then let it pass underneath. He was afloat with no sense of what to do next. Then he came across Tim Ferriss’s 4-Hour Workweek (4HWW) and envisioned making easy money while working remotely from an exotic beach—an alternative title for Ferriss’s book was Broadband and White Sand. Earlier we learned how Maneesh Sethi, like Davidson, had been inspired by Ferriss. Sethi set out to live the 4HWW lifestyle. Sethi managed to create an absentee business (writing content to attract Google AdSense money), travel the world (doing push-ups on animals), quadruple his productivity (by paying someone to slap him), and invent the Pavlok wrist zapper. Davidson’s efforts, though, did not work out. After I dropped out of Navy SEAL training in 2010, I spent a few years trying to become a “digital nomad” by moving overseas to Egypt to teach English and start an online business.
