Mit spektakulären Bildern, einer fulminanten Live-Band und herausragenden Darstellern aus dem Londoner West End markiert die opulente Inszenierung einen neuen Glanzpunkt in der langen Erfolgsgeschichte von Jesus Christ Superstar. Sein charismatisches Spiel und seine vielseitige Stimme rissen schon bei der Deutschlandpremiere 2015 das Publikum hin: Glenn Carter spielte Jesus Christ am Broadway, am Londoner West End und war auch bei der jüngsten DVD-Aufzeichnung in der Rolle des Jesus zu erleben. Sein Erfolg wurde mit einem Drama League Award gekrönt, aber Glenn Carter war nie nur auf diese eine Rolle fixiert: Auch in Musicals wie Les Misérables, Company oder Cats stellte er vielfach sein Können unter Beweis. Daneben stand er für Fernsehproduktionen wie Nine Lives und Psychoville vor der Kamera und bewies sich als Shakespeare-Darsteller in Stücken wie Hamlet oder Macbeth. Den ebenso charismatischen Gegenspieler von Jesus verkörpert Tim Oxbrow als Judas Iscariot. Mit Musical-Engagements am Londoner West End, am English Theatre in Frankfurt, auf UK-Tournee mit Spiderman und als Assistant Director u.a. in Washington hat Oxbrow vielfältige Erfahrungen im Theaterbereich gesammelt. Auch vor der Kamera überzeugt der junge Mann, der für die BBC-Produktion Equiano – Tales of the Empire vor der Kamera stand und im Musikvideo zu Sofia Hayats Debütsingle „What’s the Matter“ mitwirkte. Die sinnliche Jüngerin Mary Magdalene wird von Rebekah Lowings verkörpert. Bereits 2015 begeisterte das junge Talent Zuschauer und Kritiker in Mannheim: „Glasklar und hinreißend singt sie die Mary Magdalene“, schwärmte der Mannheimer Morgen. Dass die junge Musicaldarstellerin auf der Bühne überzeugt, konnte sie noch während ihres Studiums an der Guildford School of Acting beweisen, als sie in Produktionen wie Little Women, Rent, Waterbabies und Twang auf der Bühne stand. Mit Steve Fortune konnte ein weiterer sehr erfahrener und renommierter Musicaldarsteller für die aktuelle Tournee verpflichtet werden. Den finsteren Hohepriester Caiaphas spielte Fortune bereits 1984 am Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. Jesus Christ Superstar, das zu seinen Lieblingsmusicals zählt, führte ihn darüber hinaus ans West End und auf Großbritannien- Tournee. Sein vielseitiges Talent bewies er zudem in West End-Produktionen wie La Cage aux Folles, Fiddler on the Roof oder Chess. Daneben ist er immer wieder im Fernsehen zu erleben, unter anderem in Raiders of the Lost Art, Scoop oder der Sitcom Only Fools and Horses. Eine Paraderolle ist für den quirligen Tom Gilling die Partie des King Herod, die er schon mit siebzehn Jahren bei einer Galavorstellung vor Prinz Charles zum Besten gab. In Deutschland war er in The Full Monty am English Theatre in Frankfurt zu erleben. In Großbritannien sah man ihn unter anderem im Rahmen der UK-Touren von Half a Sixpence, The Case of the Frightened Lady und The Kiss of Death. In den letzten Jahren arbeitete er überwiegend für Film und Fernsehen, darunter Kinofilme wie The Shouting Men und Common People oder die Fernsehserien Casualty (BBC), I Shouldn’t Be Alive (American Discovery Channel) und Rocket‘s Island (CBBC). Produzent Bill Kenwright und Regisseur Bob Tomson – die schon in der Vergangenheit regelmäßig mit Werken von Webber und Rice für Furore sorgten, wie etwa mit ihrer Inszenierung von Evita an den renommiertesten Opernhäusern im deutschsprachigen Raum – unterstreichen in dieser aufwändigen Neuinszenierung einmal mehr, was Jesus Christ Superstar zum Welterfolg gemacht hat: ein legendärer Soundtrack, tiefsinnige Figuren und eine mitreißende Geschichte. Eindrucksvoll beweist die Cast bis in die kleinste Rolle, dass der Musical-Klassiker aus dem Jahr 1971 das Publikum bis heute in seinen Bann zieht und dabei nichts von seiner Stärke und Aussagekraft verloren hat. Irizarry, MA University of Pittsburgh, 2019 Jesus Christ Superstar (JCS) by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice first debuted as a staged musical in 1971, and was turned into a film production in 1973. In 2000 Gale Edwards and Nick Morris directed a second film adaptation. On Easter Sunday 2018, JCS, directed by David Levaux and Alex Rudzinki, was broadcasted on NBC as a live musical television special. Each of these three productions incorporates different configurations of interracial intimacy among the characters of Judas, Jesus, and Mary. These different characterizations and configurations of race construction produce differing commentaries on race and interracial relations. Despite the emergent scholarship of critical race theory in theater and film studies, there is surprisingly little literature on the configurations of interracial intimacies in JCS. In this thesis, I draw on critical race theory and gender studies to explore how race inflects representations of intimacy in JCS, focusing on the characterization of Judas across these productions.

Zu erleben ist das Musical vom 2. bis 6. Januar 2019 im Admiralspalast in Berlin und vom 9. bis 13. Januar im Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Zuletzt feierte die Produktion von Webber und Rice 2010, 2011 und 2017 überwältigende Erfolge in renommierten Musicaltheatern und Opernhäusern in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz. Die Titelrolle übernimmt 2019 die Irin Lucy O‘Byrne, die bereits als Fantine in Les Misérables am West End brillierte.
