Current taxonomic problems in Pandanus in Java include the interpretation of the Pandanus furcatus complex as well as the P. tectorius complex. A study of general morphological, stomatal and molecular characteristics (viz., the noncoding chloroplast intergenic spacer region atpB-rbcL) showed that P. bantamensis Koord., P. pseudolais Warb., and P. scabrifolius Martelli, previously considered synonyms of P. furcatus, and P. tectorius var. littoralis Martelli and P. odoratissimus L.f. are all distinct species. Within such a complex, a complicated morphological overlap, without any discontinuities, has led to taxonomic difficulty (Pak and Kawano 1992). Although their taxonomic affinity may be difficult to determine, some form of taxonomic resolution is desirable. According to Stone (1972), Pandanus Parkinson in Java contains many rather problematic species. He suggested that detailed studies were required to obtain a more refined taxonomic scheme. -

Abstract Loganiaceae belongs to the Order Gentianales which consists of the families Apocynaceae, Gelsemiaceae, Loganiaceae, Gentianaceae and Rubiaceae. Several Herbaria samples were studied prior to collection from Forest Reserves and National Parks in Nigeria, Republic of Benin and Ghana – with the aid of collection bags, cutlass, secateurs and ropes. Plants parts, both vegetative and reproductive were assessed with the aid of meter rule and tape rule in their natural environment and in the laboratory. Strychnos species collected were 47 individuals; 35 species were adequately identified. Anthocleista genus consists of nine species, Mostuea - three species while Nuxia, Spigelia and Usteria were monotypic genera. The leaf surfaces within the family are: hirsute, pilose, pubescent, tomentose and glabrous as found in Mostuea hirsuta, Strychnos phaeotricha, Strychnos innocua, Strychnos spinosa and members of Anthocleista species respectively. Morphological characters show 10 clusters at threshold of 47 % similarity. -

This study reports the use of three DNA barcodes: matK, rbcL, and trnL-trnF intergenic spacer; to determine the Pandan’s taxonomic status. The methods included DNA isolation, PCR, electrophoresis, and sequencing. The software BLASTn, BioEdit, and MEGA were used to analyze the data. The matK, rbcL, and trnL-trnF intergenic spacer sequences obtained were 639 bp, 539 bp, and 1014 bp in size, respectively. The results showed that although the identification had already been performed using two standard DNA barcodes sequences for plants, i.e. the matK and rbcL, and also the trnL-trnF intergenic spacer sequence which was commonly used as a DNA barcode in Pandanaceae and abundantly available in GenBank, none of them had 100% similarity to Pandan from Riau. In addition, the dendrogram generated from those sequences showed that Pandan from Riau had the closest relationship with a few species of Benstonea rather than Pandanus, Martellidendron, and Freycinetia. It can be concluded that the scientific name of Pandan from Riau can only be determined up to the genus level, i.e. -

Levin2, P.C. van Welzen3 Key words Abstract Twenty-eight species of Acalypha are recognized in Malesia. Acalypha paniculata is the sole member of subgenus Linostachys in Malesia and the rest of the species belong to subgenus Acalypha. Four previously Acalypha synonymized species are resurrected as distinct species, namely A. angatensis, A. cardiophylla var. cardiophylla, Euphorbiaceae A. grandis, and A. wilkesiana. Four species names are newly reduced to synonymy. The molecular phylogenetic Malesia analyses indicate that Acalypha is monophyletic, as is the subgenus Acalypha. The early-diverging lineages in the phylogeny genus, and its closest outgroup, consist of African species. The Malesian species do not form a monophyletic group although the molecular data strongly support two small clades within the region that are morphologically homogene- ous. The classification system that Pax and Hoffmann applied to subgenus Acalypha, which is based primarily on inflorescence morphology, appears to be unsatisfactory and incongruent with the phylogenetic analyses. Published on 16 April 2010 INTRODUCTION Molecular systematics confirms the placement of Acalypha in Acalyphoideae s.s. and shows a close relationship between Acalypha L. is the third largest genus in the Euphorbiaceae Acalypha and Mareya Baill. (Wurdack et al. 2005, Tokuoka s.s. after Euphorbia L., and Croton L., having about 450 spe- 2007). Their relationship is supported by similar morphologi- cies worldwide (Webster 1994, Radcliffe-Smith 2001). Chapter One 1.0 Introduction and Background to The
CHAPTER ONE 1.0 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY Loganiaceae is a family of flowering plants classified in the Order Gentianales (Bendre, 1975). The family was first suggested by Robert Brown in 1814 and validly published by von Martius in 1827 (Nicholas and Baijnath, 1994). Members habits are in form of trees, shrubs, woody climbers and herbs. Some are epiphytes while some members are furnished with spines or tendrils (Bendre, 1975). They are distributed mainly in the tropics, subtropics and a few in temperate regions (Backlund et al., 2000). Earlier treatments of the family have included up to 30 genera, 600 species (Leeuwenberg and Leenhouts, 1980; Mabberley, 1997) but were later reduced to 400 species in 15 genera, with some species extending into temperate Australia and North America (Struwe et al., 1994; Dunlop, 1996; Backlund and Bremer, 1998). Morphological studies have demonstrated that this broadly defined Loganiaceae was a polyphyletic assemblage and numerous genera have been removed from it to other families (sometimes to other Orders), e.g. Gentianaceae, Gelsemiaceae, Plocospermataceae, Tetrachondraceae, Buddlejaceae, and Gesneriaceae (Backlund and Bremer, 1998; Backlund et al., 2000). The family has undergone numerous revisions that have expanded and contracted its circumscription, ranging from one genus at its smallest (Takhtajan, 1997; Smith et al., 1997) to 30 at its largest (Leeuwenberg and Leenhouts, 1980). One of the current infrafamilial classifications contains four tribes: Antonieae Endl., Loganieae Endl., Spigelieae Dum. (monotypic), and Strychneae Dum. (Struwe et al., 1994). The tribes Loganieae and Antonieae are supported by molecular data, but Strychneae is not (Backlund et al., 2000). -

Five new species of Dictyochaeta are described. Twenty six species are transferred from Codinaea to Dictyochaeta, and four species are transferred to Dictyochaetopsis. Keys are provided to those species of Dictyochaeta described since 1991, and to all species of Dictyochaetopsis. The current global financial crisis aggravates food security problems and draws more attention to non-wood forest products (NWFPs), particularly as an alternative source of food. Forests rarely provide the bulk of the human diet, but their role in food security is often critical. Scandent plants are high in conductive capability, but therefore have highly vulnerable hydrosystems; this survey attempts to see what kinds of adaptations exist for safety and in which taxa. A review of scandent dicotyledons reveals that a high proportion possesses vasi centric tracheids (22 families) or true tracheids (24 families); the majority of scandent families falls in these categories. Other features for which listings are given include vascular tracheids, fibriform vessel elements, helical sculpture in vessels, starch-rich parenchyma adjacent to vessels, and other parenchyma distributions. The high vulnerability of wide vessels is held to be countered by various mechanisms. True tracheids and vasicentric tracheids potentially safeguard the hydrosystem by serving when large vessels are embolized. -
