GOVERNMENT OF INDIA RAILWAYS LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO:3618 ANSWERED ON:07.12.2016 Connectivity to State Capitals Chaudhury Shri Jitendra Will the Minister of RAILWAYS be pleased to state: (a) whether all the State capitals are connected by the broad gauge line and the number out of them that are served by the Rajdhani and Shatabdi like fast trains; (b) whether the Railways shall consider to connect all the State Capitals at least thrice in a week by Rajdhani Express which are yet to be served by this kind of services and if so, the details thereof; (c) whether Tripura Sundari Express shall be extended upto Udaipur (Tripura) and one pair of daily inter-city train shall be introduced shortly between Agartala and Guwahati; and (d) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor? Answer MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF RAILWAYS (SHRI RAJEN GOHAIN) (a): All State Capitals except the State of Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim are connected by Broad Gauge Railway Line. In Goa, Broad Gauge rail connectivity exists upto Madgaon and Vasco-da-Gama stations. The summer Capital of Jammu & Kashmir, Srinagar is connected to Broad Gauge network but it does not have connectivity with Railways network beyond Banihal. At present, out of the 29 States, 22 States are connected by Rajdhani/Shatabdi Express type of train services. (b): At present there is no proposal to connect the State Capitals which are yet to be served by Rajdhani Express. However, introduction of train services including Rajdhani Express is an ongoing process over Indian Railways subject to operational feasibility, commercial viability, availability of resources etc. (c) & (d): At present, there is no proposal to extend 14019/14020 Anand Vihar-Agartala Tripura Sundari Expresss upto Udaipur (Tripura) and introduce a daily intercity train between Agartala and Guwahati due to operational and resource constraints. ******.

#1/2021 Strengthening Railway Networks in Northeast India A Key Driver to Deepen Sub-regional Connectivity and Trade Suresh P Singh* and Shashi Bhushan Roy** Indian Railways, which is one the largest rail networks in the world, has been operating for dec- ades. It is a prolific mode of transport crucial for nation-building through extended transport connectivity, logistics, and promotion of economic development and trade. However, one part of the country that has remained the least connected is the Northeast region (NER) which includes eight states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura). Lately, however, the government has taken several steps to create new and improve existing infrastructure in the NER. These include concerted efforts to boost air, road, rail, waterways, and telecom connectivity. This Briefing Paper attempts to understand railways connectivity initiatives in the NER and their potential to foster connectivity, trade, and economic cooperation within and outside the region, particularly with Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal. Introduction The Northeast Frontier Railway with a total route length of 4136.13 Km, is one of the 17 (Seventeen) Zonal Railways of India and serves as the life line or the main artery for movement of people and essential commodities for the entire region comprising Bihar, North Bengal, Sikkim and the 'Seven Sisters of the North-East, Viz Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. The Northeast Frontier Railway is also strategically very important as the North-East Region is practically surrounded by international border on all sides except the narrow neck connection it has with the rest of India. The area of Northeast Frontier Railway operation is characterized by exceptional beauty at the same time by some of the most arduous terrain. Despite severe constraints due to natural calamities and disturbances, this Railway has been adequately carrying essential commodities into this region and helping in transporting local products out of this region. As per road map emerging out of the national mission, railways have set a target to carry out annual procurement of Rs. 10,000 crore through GeM provision in IREPS during the next year. VISION OF A NEW INDIA: The Ministry of Commerce & Industry is creating an action-oriented plan which will highlight specific sector level interventions to bolster India‘s march towards becoming a USD 5 trillion economy before 2025.
