ALTHOUGH the majority of Hartlepool residents participate in recycling, there appears to be a lot of confusion over exactly what can and cannot be recycled. Currently, around 20% of the recycling put out across the town for collection cannot be accepted because it is contaminated by non-recyclable materials, including plastic bags and food waste. Now Hartlepool Council’s Waste Team has launched a campaign to try and reduce levels of contamination to less than 10%. A new on-line system has been developed which enables ? residents to easily check whether a particular item of waste can be recycled. All people need to do is go to www.hartlepool.gov.uk/can-it-be-recycled and select the waste item they wish to query from a drop down list and they will be informed whether the item can be placed in a grey bin. PEOPLE in Hartlepool are being urged to take part in an important consultation to shape the future of Hartlepool’s libraries. Since 2010/11 the Government has cut the Council’s main revenue grant by almost 40% - a drop of £30m – and since 2013 the Library Service budget has had to be reduced by almost 16% but the savings have been achieved without any direct impact on library opening hours or the branch library network. However, the Library Service now has to find further savings from 2016 and these cannot be achieved without reviewing the whole service, including front-line operations. As part of that review, over the next three months the Library Service is consulting with library users, staff, community room users, partnership organisations and other stakeholders to seek their views on potential ways of delivering services differently to make savings and also improve services.
